Few people in this forum have the GPS.
Price at about RM220-250, IIRC.

GPS does work in Malaysia. But for PSP, you will need to generate map yourself (from online source ie. MSN map, etc)
There is application to help you with this.

Our fellow moderator Ninja will be able to enlighthen you more on the PSP GPS.

I already asked them before. Looks like we have to convert the Malsings map to a format that MapThis can use.

Bought mine at Lowyat Plaza. You can find a few shops in Sg.Wang selling the GPS also.

And, it can be use to navigate in Malaysia by using MapThis! homebrew with MSN Local Live maps, although it's not that detail. That's why I'm asking the people at Malsings whether we can convert their maps to MapThis format.

Just a question, my aunty has a portable GPS unit (not for PSP). It comes with MapKing. So, can I use that map, and copy to the PSP's GPS unit (or some sort like that)?

Well, I myself not sure how MapThis! works though (at least not yet seen). rclxub.gif

Nope, it does not work that way.. MapThis is using their own format. Maps was extracted from Google Maps and MSN Local Live maps and save as compressed GPSFS raster file format.

Ok, I can't copy. So, meaning that MapKing format is different from Mapthis!, right?

And also, MapThis! can only compresses some sort of map like Google/MSN Maps only and not from other map software? Correcto? smile.gif

Yup, the only source for maps in MapThis is limited to Google/MSN Maps. Although you can create your custom maps by using JPEG/PNG format, it will be pain in the ass to intergrate the maps with the latitude and longitude of the GPS.

But, definitely it works. I've tried it before with Kuala Lumpur maps extracted from MSN Local Live.

I tried my aunty's handheld GPS unit (we went arpound KL). It was pretty neat, it guides thru voice and accurate. Can't compare with her built-in BMW GPS, way better. tongue.gif

How I wish PSP's made the same. And local map support. Sigh...

Despite their less than ok reputation I got one from there anyway. It was hard to find the last time I went there. Only got mine at the 4th or 5th shop I went. Tu pun last unit.

Have you check the In7ane's GDML thread at deniska.dcemu.co.uk? But, I'm not sure whether they have something detail written about custom map creation. The biggest problem to create a custom map, is to match the lon and lat with the map. I'm still dunno how to do that. laugh.gif

agree ... custom map tutorial is not there ... I only manage to create custom map with using MapCruncher to V Earth. I crunch our JKR map to VE ... and it work ... but the map is outdated.

So the only step is to get map scan and do it with MapCruncher ... anyone have any Jabatan Ukur map ... they have town topo map and many other map ... http://www.jupem.gov.my/sppmg/Register.aspx ...use IE to open their website ... Did find my shop lot listed at their website ... but their coastal area is outdated ... did test the gps location is still inland using their map but actually on the sea already

So need to buy at their website .... and do mapcrunch to VE

Also did found at Malsingmap forum ... there is a group that doing tracing map to Google Earth ...

I want to get a PSP along with the GPS adaptor.
Was wondering whether it works like a normal GPS unit...save waypoints and all.
Cos will be using it to navigate thru the desert.

I think you are referring to GPS rite, not GPRS... GPRS has nothing to do with mapping... It's GPS... But if you want to ask more on GPS for PSP, try to visit PSP Thread. One of the LYN members (Stringfellow or Ninja) may have discuss this before...

If I'm not mistaken GPS accessory for the PSP only works for the Japanese units, so owners of EU & US units aren't able to use the GPS unless the mod with Garmin or likewise units.

I'm getting my PSP when I get my car. Why? mainly I want to use the PSP for GPS. Besides, with Chains of Olympus coming, and Crisis Core already in store, can't resist...

From what I read, I still don't think I have a clue on the GPS development in Malaysia. Wondering if anyone has ever asked at the Sony Centre in KLCC for the GPS unit.

well check your GPS unit if it is connected properly, if you inspect the bottom part of the unit, you should see two gold pins on left and right of the USB connector. If one of them dont make contact into the unit then the unit does not receive power.

if one of them are shorter than the other try pulling it gently down a little to even out the lengths.

to get the map for KL, just use the GMDL (Global Map Downloader Tool) supplied in the Mapthis download RAR file. Open the Global Map Download Tool.exe in the /Debug folder of the GMDL folder. Create an empty directory on your desktop with a name that starts with _ . i.e, (_KL). Then in the space above the map tool state that directory. Make sure you are connected to the internet to download the map (duh). The program will automatically open up Google Maps, navigate to the area you want to download and then click Download this map at the top left. It will then slowly load the area you selected in google maps. Confirm your selection and then proceed with the download.

IMPORTANT! you need 2 or 3 system files from your psp firmware (usbacc.prx, (something else).prx and one more that I cant remember. Without those the program will not start.

I still havent got the psp to tell me to turn left or right when on the road, I bought the Dragon car stand to fit my GPS but it doesnt fit. Still need to mod the car stand to make it fit. sweat.gif Other than that yeah the GPS works fine in malaysia now, thanks to google maps updating our roads! icon_idea.gif

i am funnyguyonly1 friend , i found the psp290 is differents from the pda...

why no routing navigation set ? mean once we set the destination , it wont navigate .

and the detaction between the sate and the device is slow enough.

one comment : not worth. no differents if you bought a paper map.

hope mapthis will develope the best !

I do agree the software lacks of navigation but then again, maps and software + source code is foc.
Paper map?? I don't think so.

worth it or not? depends on what you're looking for. If you have not notice, GPS homebrew app development is still very young for PSP. Give it some time and it might just meet what you're looking for IMHO.

The only complain i have is that the receiver unit seems fragile.

paper map doesnt have an arrow showing YOU ARE HERE and updates in real time. For me that is good enough. I think the ability is there just that we havent found out yet. I know it can record our path.

Hi I am new here !

Currently I hv a psp slim ver 3.71 m33-2

I am thinking of upgrading to ver 3.80 m33

does the Mapthis0499 and the gps for psp work under this version ?

*After reading that some of the forummers here are able to make the gps (psp) work fine with MApthis, I am more confident to want to buy a unit of the PSP-GPS.

Just confirm that if ver 3.71 m33-2 or 3.80 m33 can also run, then sure i will buy.

Thanks !

Mapthis works with 3.8m33-4. I', using it without a problem. I don't think there will be any problem with 3.71 also as long as you install mapthis properly(needs to copy 2 prx files from flash0 (usbacc and usbgps).

I downloaded and followed the exact instructions from http://www.digimartz.com/offical-sony-psp-...iver-p-164.html

and yet gave me "Error in loading usb devices .............."

I am using ver 3.71 m33-2 without GPS-PSP

I came to notice, there are many game folders under psp, which one is correct

1) psp/game
2) psp/game150
3) psp/game371

Ok for 3.71, toggle flash0 and get the usbacc.pxr and usbgps.pxr file from the kd folder.
Then copy them to the mapthis folder.
Make sure both mapthis and %mapthis folder is in PSP\Game371.

Hope this helps smile.gif
And yes you can run mapthis without the gps unit.

smile.gif to toggle flash0 turn off your psp by holding the off switch up. Hold it till the psp shuts down.
Then hold down R and turn on your psp.
You shold be in recovery mode.
Go to advance.
Plug in your usb cable.
Go toToggle USB flash0.
In your pc you'll find your psp as a removable drive.
You'll find the kd folder in that drive. The folder is hidden so you got to turn on view hidden folder option in your folder options.
You'll get the files there.

Hmmm I've asked around and I was mistaken. Only if you format flash0 then you're really screwed.

Ok what you need to do to restore your psp now is to get the entire flash1 files and folders from someone else's psp. Then copy them back to your psp. Remember this method will not work for Flash0 as Flash0 is unique to each psp.

Yes for the moment is only that. Unless you can somehow create geodata for kl map, then it can guide you to places. I read up somewhere if you can somehow define POIs it can somehow use that data to guide you too but have not tried it out yet.

Seems like someone has started to test out the Go Explore software for the PSP GPS system.
Too bad the map is only for UK.
Check out the review.

Btw, I'm also a new owner of PSP 290. Now playing around with Mapthis on my PSP smile.gif

It seems like we need to wait for the official US GPS to come out. Hoping that supports the maps from Malaysia too.

I am also using the mapthis! software, yup the software does show your car speed in KM/H as well as bearing(North/South/E/W), altitude, trip time, average speed and some other info which i cant remember. There is a feature for you to set your speed warning limit also. For eg. you set your speed limit to 80 km/h, if you drive faster than that, it will display a warning that you are over-speeding.

There are mounts being sold for the PSP that can be attached on the dashboard of the car, or the middle of it. Try checking out Play-Asia for more.

The 2 pins next to the usb socket is most likely the problem.
Try pulling the pins out a little first before mounting it to the psp.

yes only one software for GPS for the PSP in malaysia at the moment and it is Mapthis.
If i'm not wrong there is function for the navigation thing but sadly there are no maps with the data(geodata if i'm not wrong) for malaysia.

i try to download the map using the GMDL
then put inside the software mapviewer_v03 ~> map folder there

i try to use my GPS-290.. at night...
10~20.. to retrieve the satellite data.. to my psp...
then half and hour later.. can used already...
ai.... but i will upset on it..

1. VERY SLOW>>>> the software always said [SPEED WARNING SPEED WARNING SPEED WARNING]

2. Looks like the Google map GMDL is outdated for malaysia map,
cause i try to download the whole KL map.... but.. when i using gps.. while i am driving... the location gps dot on my psp screen there, is not exactly 100% same on the map there...

3. i hope sony malaysia have a own server to let GPS psp go very efficient, just like Singapore, i heard from my customer.. they paid SG 30 per month, using GPS there.. and is fast ....sleep.gif".. how come malaysia still dont have .. sigh..

yupp it is very slow... but then again it is also not as power consuming as the normal GPS systems.

For the mis alignment thinggy maybe it is the sat signal is weak lah since you are driving in KL. GPS system tends to fail when you are not in the open area.

Well I doubt many will pay for that service when you can do the 1 time investment on other GPS systems.

As for the Penang map the size can vary one. Depends on how much detail you save.

If you want a GPS that can direct you to places, this is not for you.
Currently you can only use the gps to get your current location and to track your path(usage in malaysia).
And you might be dissapointed with the GPS signal connection thinggy as it is much slower then the other GPS unit.

Only advantage you get is.
- Bigger screen
- homebrew(open possiblilty that there will be more dev for this..or maybe not)
- less power cousumption(can work longer then most GPS system)
- Map is FOC from goggle map.

Dude as mention in my post earlier. The GPS unit for the PSP will not be able to navigate you to places. It will just let you know your current position agains the downloaded map.

PS : If you have somewhere read up that it can navigate you(give directions) to places marked on the map I don't see how it can be compared with the stand alone units.

I'm using PSP GPS. It's sort-of like a hobby though cos it is only showing current location against Google Earth map. It's useful though, if you use it for "roughly" showing you the way. I bought the GPS receiver from www.play-asia.com for RM 163 only (USD $49.90). The price there is USD $59.90 but I found a USD $10 discount coupon after I google online (I got it here http://play-asia-couponcodes.blogspot.com). I receive my package after 10 days using free delivery (play-asia is based in Hong Kong). Bought this in mid of Sept. Got asked the shop selling RM 270 so I decided to buy thru play-asia since it's RM 100 cheaper! Delivery is good. No defects and the package looks good.

The map is downloaded from the internet using a downloader software. Took me 1 whole day to download a map for Selangor but I failed to download for Perak after downloaded for 2 days but I'll try again. The software is GMDL. Read here for how to download the map. http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=60230

Too bad I don't find a way to insert geodata into Malaysia map. So I don't think there's a way to include road navigation into it, even though MapThis software has this function.

So for those that really use the GPS capability better get a real car navigator. Shld be around RM 500, RM 800 and RM 1000. Or get a PDA or phone with GPS and install TomTom inside there. This is what I'm planning to do in near future smile.gif

guys, pls help me....i'm facing problem with the gps290

for those who try it work, pls let me know wat mapthis ver. u are using with?
v3? v4? or v5?

i'm trying with this step below:

1.What you need to have
a. A homebrew capable PSP (though tutorial explains how this works with DAX’s custom firmware only).
b. A self-powered GPS receiver (not all models have been tested) or you can use the PSP’s official receiver (PSP-290)
c. A PSP to GPS cable (not needed if you are using PSP-290):
i.You can make your own by going to this link: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=30035
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PSP OR YOUR GPS RECIEVER WHEN BUILDING YOUR OWN CABLE.
ii. Buy a factory made PSP to USB B mini cable from www.moby.cn
d. Deniska’s Mapthis! Mapping software: http://deniska.dcemu.co.uk/bin/mapViewer_v03.zip
e. Mapthis! 0.4 EBOOT.PBP: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qr7uks
f. In7ane’s Map Downloader: http://www.sendspace.com/file/90i8iu
g. PSP Car stand (optional)
2. What you need to do
a. Copy the mapViewer and mapViewer% folders from the mapViewer_v03 (in step 1(d)) folder to your game folder on your memory stick and make sure your kernel is set to 1.50 if you have any gps pther than the psp-290 (please refer to the FAQ in Deniska's discussion forum for important details on making this work with psp-290)
b. Copy the appropriate EBOOT file (depending on if u have a HOLUX GPS(or any other non psp-290) receiver or PSP-290) from the mapthis! 0.4 file you downloaded in step 1(e) into the mapViewer folder on your memory stick (overwrite the current one).
c. Copy the ‘system’ folder from the the mapthis! 0.4 file you downloaded in step 1(e) into the mapViewer folder on your memory stick (overwrite the current).
d. Start up your PSP to make sure the application runs fine and mess around with the sample map included of the London

but when i want to start my psp, it come with the error massage---->loading usb accessory module...error?

why happen like dis? pls help me....i'm getting crazy now being trying dis for a few hour.....

then i try to generate the map using com like the step below:

e. Now that you have the mapping software, you need to download the map of the area you want to navigate through. Extract the File you downloaded in step 1(f) and go to GMDL/bin/Debug and run ‘Global Map Download Tool’

when i want to run it, it came out with the error message again.....---> the application failed to initialeze properly (0x0000135). click on OK to terminate the application...

why?

pls help me...tq

tried today. PSP slim is a lot easier than PSP thick to get everything work.

for PSP thick. u got to extract the 2 usbgps.drx or something from the flash01 and enable in the psp configuration menu. then when u run the software it can show the PSP GPS status is on (usually it is off b4 setting)

for PSP slim....just put the Mapthis software(with your current position map in)
into the MS:PSP/GAME390 or GAME
then the psp gps will showing ON in the mapthis and can locate satelite (version 3.90)
without any setting....

version 3.90 is the most easiest to setup. i tested version 3.40. 3.71 3.80 and 3.90 .
its ok for 3.40 . 3.71 n 3.80 a bit handy and 3.90 = no need to do any setting....

just 2 cents comment. cos i am letting my psp gps290 now n cos got my mobile gps smile.gif

version 4.97 if i am right. my psp firmware is 3.80.
b4 i was on 3.71 and it took me sometimes to get the psp gps device working on my psp1000

and when using the same software on psp2000 and version 3.90...

just copy the whole mapthis folder to the Memory stick. its working perfectly.
without any configuration and that shock me off...

for version 3.70 n 3.71 i need to extract the usbcrx.drx (forgot the name of the file) from the Flash01 stuff
to the MS and open a folder called SEPLUGIN then the psp can detected my gps device.

anyway i am not sure why and thats how i got my psp gps work on my psp1000 b4.

just 2 cents sharing.

for your information.
psp2000 is a lot more easier to get the thing work.

guys, i am planning on getting a stand alone GPS system for my car. However, i would like to know how well does the PSP GPS do against a stand alone unit?

i have test before with Garmin Nuvi (using Garmin) and holux receiver+dopod 838pro (using a Mapking)...but are great and the not much different in terms of speed..of coz sometime they will guide to the different route coz the map version is not same..but imho i still prefer the standalone GPS since it have bigger screen and don't eat my phone battery tongue.gif

got mine for RM210 or so like a year back. It's not as sensitive as a dedicated gps unit. Far from it I would say. Maybe new firmware for psp improved it but I doubt it.

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if there is method to add Malaysia maps in Go! Explore software? I have try download the program and open the ISO file with UltraISO, and I open the direction PSP_GAME/USRDIR/ CONTENT and you will find out, there are Map, POI, and Building folder for 3D maps. The maps is in .FBL format. I have download the Malaysia.FBL format with a 3D map which in .3DL format. This maps is actualy for iGO8, but the file format is same right? I try to copy that file into map folder in Go!Explore and save as new ISO file. But when i put in my PSP, there are error "game could not be started (80010002)", but if i not put those Malaysia map file, the program is smoothly running. Is there any steps I miss here? because i found other folder call SYSDIR/UPDATE and have DATA.BIN, EBOOT.BIN and Param.SFO file..Is it i need to update anything in those file? I believe if these error can be fixed up, the GO!Explore can be running with Malaysia maps.. rclxms.gif
