Hi All,

Since EV is going to be something common soon, perhaps in the next 5 years (sooner/later) - does it make sense to prepare a charging point for the EV at your renovation stage?

What kind of setup should it be? 4mm/6mm wire spec?

I am going to standby 6mm wire for now but the cost is going to be madness especially using a good cable.
Good cable needs to be accompanied by good setup eg. the MCB all so the added up costs kind of worrying now.

Just pull the 3 phase power first. Doesn't cost a lot to do it while you are renovating. Plus can conceal in the wall.

If you do it later, ask yourself do you want to hack and re paint? Or you ok with it running with a PVC tube on surface without hacking?

Yes, I get you.

Just wondering is 6mm cable is the right spec for EV, based on what I read so far should be good for L2 home charging.

Looking at the current market the home charger starts 7kw to 22kw - whopping high ⚡ here that us why I opted for 6mm cable which the wireman finds I'm a crazy customer because no home owner installs 6mm wire... I guess theory doesn't lie that 6mm is probably the minimum only

The more important factor for high power EV charger is 3 phase power.
Single phase can support up to 7kW only regardless if you use 6mm or even 10mm wire.

Please opt for the 5 pins 3 phase plug for your EV charger.

planning for reno and also thinking of putting a power point for ev charger in the future.

as my house has already 3 phase power supply, from the current specs, 22kW charger is a common one. this means 32A which in turn will require 6mm.sq cable as mentioned above.

the question is, how shall i terminate the cable? shall i reserve a few meter extra length and hide it first above the car porch ceiling? or terminate it with an isolator at high level (below ceiling) of the car porch wall?

since the DB is just behind the main entrance door, i would expect that the cable length will not be that much. from shopee i see mega cable 6mm is about rm3 per meter, then x5 cable (3ph+n+e) x 20m will only cost about rm300, then + mcb + labour i think the total cost should be less than 1k?

If you are doing it just for the future you might want to consider terminate with a socket plug point first but this means you already locked down the spot..

Otherwise you can just standby the cables longer and roll them up but secure the tips properly so they are not in contact with each other.... - just make sure you turn off the MCB at your DB for safety reasons.

I was charged rm5xx for a 6 sq mm wire (Mega cable) x 2 direct from DB. But price nowadays varies between wireman and also based on project size.
