McLaren were poised to use systems on their 2008 car that had been inspired by secret Ferrari information given to them by Nigel Stepney, the FIA's technical report on the matter reveals.

The FIA document also reveals that engineers within the team were aware of a Ferrari 'mole' passing information to them.

One email exchange between engineers on April 13, 2007 discussing steering angles mentioned an exact figure for the Ferrari wheelbase. A response from a senior McLaren engineer was: "Is the Ferrari wheelbase an accurate figure? Did it come from photos or our mole?"

The response was: "You will find it's to the nearest 'mm'."

McLaren have vowed to cease development work on the parts that could have been inspired by Ferrari knowledge, and the FIA stated on Thursday night that it was now willing to bring the matter to a close.

Ferrari's car for the 2008 season will be 'completely new' compared to the current F2007 according to team technical director Aldo Costa. His comments come despite strict rules which limit the amount of radical changes teams can make.

"It will be a completely new car even though you can't make radical changes because of the regulations," Costa told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "The front of the car will be different with different shaped sidepods and the wing will be new too."

"Our first tests at Barcelona and Jerez were positive, we simulated four races with no problems," he added. "There will be new components in the suspension and gearbox with even quicker shifts."

"We intend to start 2008 strongly and will push to the maximum during the winter to show up in good condition at the start of the season," he concluded.

No hope for other big team already, cause Mclaren still using F2007 data, and Renault using Mclaren MP-22 or MP-23 data   jk...

Ferrari's new car for 2008 will be an 'evolution' of its championship winning predecessor, according to chief designer Nicolas Tombazis.

The Greek 39-year-old, who returned to Maranello early last year following a stint at McLaren, told the Spanish newspaper Diario AS that the F2008 will feature a shorter wheelbase than the 2007 car when it is revealed on 6 January.

"Much has changed, although the car will be an evolution of the previous one," Tombazis said.

"In 2007 we were faster on the fast circuits than on those with predominantly slower curves. We have worked on the weakness and solved it," he added.

Tombazis also rejected suggestions that Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari's new world champion who joined the Italian team in 2007, faced internal criticism for his failure to communicate effectively with the team.


"Kimi speaks little, but he says important things," Tombazis remarked, also explaining the Finn's apparent difficulty to adapt to Ferrari life early in 2007.

"The change from Michelin to Bridgestone cost him, which is what happened to Alonso as well. He needed some time to understand his new team and environment," he added.

"Since Indianapolis, however, he had a very strong end to his season," Tombazis said.
