PETALING JAYA: The unexpected floods last weekend have caused irreparable damages to a large number of vehicles and motor workshop owners say they are overwhelmed, with the numbers of vehicles waiting for repairs expected to rise over the next few days.

Of greater concern is the estimated high cost of repairs, especially for cars with many electronic systems. Workshops say it may cost anywhere between RM20,000 and RM40,000, depending on the model and extent of damage.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd body and paint manager Hari Vairavan Nathan said his branch in Shah Alam had checked nearly 50 cars affected by the floods so far.

“We are expecting more over the next few weeks as the floods have not subsided in some places,” he told FMT.

He said the costs of repairs may come up to between RM20,000 to RM40,000 each, depending on the damage and the vehicle’s model.

“Most cars these days are equipped with a lot of electronic components. If they are submerged or contaminated by water, they cannot be serviced. They have to be replaced,” he added.

Hari, who has been with Toyota for 12 years, said that if the victims cannot afford to get to a workshop, they can self-check at home by inspecting the air filter and engine oil for any signs of water contamination.

To reduce the victims’ burden, Hari said his company would be providing free towing services for all Toyota vehicles affected by the flood.

“We are also giving a 25% discount on the total cost of repairs. We will be communicating with banks to provide easy payment plans with zero interest for affected customers,” he added.

Hangar 5, a smaller car repair and maintenance shop in Shah Alam, says they cannot afford to give discounts.

The workshop is currently charging a base price of RM700 to repair vehicles that were not badly affected by the floods.

“But depending on the extent of the damage and the vehicle model, the price can go up to between RM10,000 and RM15,000,” said Hangar 5 co-owner Karthik Palan.

“It’s a massive job because we need to dismantle everything if a car has been completely submerged inside muddy waters. A lot of the electrical components won’t work,” he told FMT.

Ultimately, both Hari and Karthik advised all vehicle owners to add “special perils” to their vehicle insurance as it covers natural disasters

Modern cars are crap to begin with. All like Pampers. Once kaput, throw away.

Better keep a carby car around as backup.

At 40K, might as well declare as total loss.

This is not a best solution anyway as the coverage limit is very little.

I asked my current car insurer during renewal last year, wana add flood cover, found out the limit of cover is only 10% of sum insured or rm10k whichever is lower. So if my car is insured for rm50k, hailatt kena flood, they only pay me rm5k. Tnmcfh rm5ktak cukup to overhaul lah.

Anyway, check with your insurers. They might have a different t&c, but I don't think it would differ by much

Typical tidak apa attitude. I don't bother covering windscreen but I always buy special perils coverage. I can afford to replace windscreen but I don't want to risk having to pay RM20k to repair a flooded car.

If the car mentioned is an older model of the city, maybe you could get a engine and transmission swap for less than rm10k. How about the newer or latest city? Where to get the engine and transmission except buying new which would cost a bomb. Anyway, engine and transmission rarely gets damaged during floods. The damagw would be on the multiple sensors, wiring, ecu, interior, etc which would also cost a lot if brand new.

Too bad most Malaysian think that insurance is a scam. They think that they need to claim everything every year then only insurance is worthwhile.

Since when Service center really service cars?

99% of the time change parts.

Japanese ECU below the air-con underneath the dashboard. If air-con leak, ECU also kaput.

Ecu normally cover by alloy hard cover and seal tight.

Water dripping is nothing.

That would be unfair too. The best is to start implementing merit system. More discount for careful driver, more loading for reckless driver.

That's where NCD and telemetics come in. What I mean by premium increasing for everyone is like what happened to medical insurance - those who don't claim pun face a rise in premium.

I understand what you mean. Hence my response instead of increasing the premium across the board to recover the losses, they should consider punishing people who “cause” the premium to be high at the first place, which are the reckless drivers.

Maybe NCB system isn't doing its job. I still hear people saying "aiya, got insurance why don't claim?".

No point..... I inside Mitsubishi asx group, last night a owner just finish full service and interior cleaning.the car working now, but airbag light, gearbox light stays on... Not sure when other parts will start to fail.
Cost so far spend by the owner is rm6k (outside workshop).
This also budget budget repair... Not really go deeper into cleaning and checking every Ecu module .
