Which model specifically from those brands?

I use this as a guide and find for reviews of a particular model online: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1092033-ssd-tier-list/

SSD chip only just few factory produce.

Tons of brand are assembly only.

So you only need to buy with those warranty easy claim brands.

It means what's inside the SSD you purchased is not the same as what's stated in their website. Generally, for normal consumer, it doesn't matter. There's a couple specs that really matters, such as does the SSD have DRAM or not.

I actually prefer to use this for comparison. While I don't aim for very high performance, I'll make sure it at least have DRAM, and above average performance. The price point is similar, so just raise your budget a bit to get better performance.

Smaller size like 128 and 256 GB used to have significantly cheaper 'critical for performance' component, so try to get at least 500GB. Not sure about the current trend.

Should state your use case (i.e. boot drive/storage only/video editing destination drive/etc.)

Pure storage only imho can be DRAM-less to save abit money. Else DRAM ftw (Crucial MX, Samsung Evo,etc.)

Case in point- i've got 860 evo and crucial bx500 both as boot with storage partitions. I personally see no difference

Is it better to get 500gb dram ssd or top up a bit for 1tb dramless ssd? Usually I see them almost same price, only rm59 difference.

You should state what you want the SSD to do. Ie, what is the purpose.

Just like getting a processor. If all you want to do is browse 1080p youtube videos, getting a 12900K makes no sense right?

If all you want is a OS drive to boot up faster, any affordable common brand is good enough. Just backup your OS drive frequently.
For example, I am a cheapo and am using a PNY CS900 240GB SSD as my OS drive for past 2 years. no problem.

Crucial MX500 is the gold standard for affordable-reliability.

Kingston is inconsistent, and their more expensive model isn't any better than MX500.

For Adata, well...I only experienced 3 instances of RAM failure in my entire life and they were all Adata.

Crucial, Kingston, SanDisk, Seagate were leading Brand in Storage/RAM since donkey year ago. Most of them gave 5 years Warranty and performance just abt the same...
fyi, Crucial Kingston hardcore RAM

Samsung more like late comer with lot of flashy Advertisement

Personally, i would avoid ADATA, Sandisk, Maybe WD, Seagate too, unless they have premium product to test one
WD, Seagate too mainstream

I give a go for Crucial, Kingston anytime...

If u need high speed sustained write (e.g. video editing) u'll need an ssd with DRAM. Else multitasking no DRAM also ok.

For the price, i'd get the 1tb as space>sustained write for me

LOL, Crucial (micron) is among the only few manufacturers with facilities and capabilities to manufacture their own NAND chips just like Intel and Samsung did...

In short, YES, they're good to go.

Friends will not let other friends buy dramless SSD.

Nuff said

So most budget friendly is Crucial MX

And please don't buy from China el cheapo brand even if branded, price seems too good to be true.

Wow... Guys, really appreciate your feedbacks and super informative to me! Now I only know the SSD does include the DRAM! 😂 No wonder some are cheap and some higher price!

So. If for Video Editing, Recording, a lot of Read & Write in real time, it's best to get a DRAM SSD , right?
If, only for Storage purpose, DRAM-less SSD will do, correct?
How about for OS ?

As everyone mentioned above, Crucial MX seems the best choice in overall?

Simple summary for TS.

- If your laptop/ desktop is over 5 years, no need buy expensive SSD.
- If you PC only has SATA cable (desktop) or SATA M.2 (laptop) connection, all SATA SSD speed in this category are 5xxMB/s only. So no need expensive SSD.
- There is nothing wrong buying cheap SSD from brands like Colorful, HkVision, Walram and such.

Basically companies like Kingston, Adata, Sandisk and practically all other companies that does not make their own chips, buy from other chip making companies to make their SSD.

A simple solution to reliability problems is make an over provisioning partition in the SSD. There are many guides for this. Its an option if you need reliability. As proof, if you install Samsung SSD Magician utility, it even has over provisioning option in it. Even Samsung one of the best quality SSD you can buy has this as backup plan.

The only problem i have so far with cheap SSD is the controller. Some of them are weak in a sense that it cannot retain the custom firmware (from the company brand that made it) that was programmed inside and it reverted to controller chip firmware that caused unreadable problems. I have experienced Kingston & Patriot reverting to factory SATAFIRM that caused the SSD to be unreadable. You would probably not have this problem with Samsung, Crucial and Intel.

Super appreciate your best comment! You are really informative enough 🤩

My recent SSD just ran out of space 🤣 would you mind to suggest 1 for me (cheap and best in the range)?
Erm, I'm with Old Mac Desktop (SATA). Still, the 1TB SSD I wish to get is best to apply in my Mac Desktop as well as for External/Portable Drive.

I'm using Adata SX8200 Pro Gen3 NVME in an external Thunderbolt case. My Mac mini is only 256GB internal. Latest SSD I have is XPG S70 Blade Gen4 NVME in a PC.

As for SATA SSDs, if old computer, just any cheap cheap SATA SSD. Samsung is always expensive. My old MacBooks and Windows laptops using PNY CS900, Kingston A400, Adata SU650 & Topmore TP-100. Hackintosh using Sandisk SSD Plus.

Crucial (if not mistaken BX500 series). I've been using it for my old laptop and PS4. Both still working until today. I've lost count the years I've bought it. Seems a-OK for me.

Haha. 1 super old Mac (2008) No Thunderbolt, 1 unit of 2013 office setup with thunderbolt!

I was thinking of NVME too. But, as you see, my old Mac needs an NVME external drive? Or just a very normal SSD with a USB Casing?

If yes, price for a SSD 1TB seems around RM380 - RM420 , right?

Maybe not as your main drive. I use Samsung for the main boot drive, and cheap SSD for storage/games.

That way your important files don't get exposed to such risks.

Anyway there is little problem with the reliability of these SSDs tbh. Just go for it. No point paying more for perceived quality when it really doesn't matter.

Check Lazada. Should be about rm400 plus minus. Definitely pick local reseller rather than overseas.

If you’re talking external = portable connect with USB type then yeah even more reason to go for the cheapest one since it’s not being used as frequently.

Just find the cheapest one from a reputable brand on Shopee/Lazada. Last time I bought a 1TB Sandisk for 450 as my game/storage drive for my laptop. Still working after 2 years of daily use.

Reputable means not some unknown kingkong Chinese brand. Adata, Sandisk, Kingston, Silicon Power are ok.

No problem.

Easiest way to check whether it’s acceptable is to search the same model and read reviews on Amazon. If there’s hundreds or thousands of reviews and it’s still 4+ stars then ok. PNY and Adata I think still ok

Honestly micron warranty very bad in messia. If you want good warranty then pick intel / samseng / seagate. WD a bit drop but still better than micron in messia.

usable. But micron warranty claim for a country same like messia not good compare to their cmpetitor.

You need to find back the one who sell you the product in order to claim it.

You CAN buy cheap SATA SSD for regular use or running OS or apps in it. Any brand also can. With or without Dram also can.

But most importantly... MOST IMPORTANTLY once you installed OS or use it, run CrystalDisk Info and see the temperature. Run HWInfo or if your computer BIOS can see HDD/SSD Temp.

If the Temperature starts at 50c, send it back to claim warranty. 100% confirm will fail in less than a year. Throughout many years installing many brands and sizes, the early temperature is one indicator the SSD will not last long.

The other one that you cannot detect is SSD controller failure. That one really based on luck. Phison brand controllers are the most common for cheap SSD. Last year i have experienced Kingston 240GB A400 & Patriot 240GB with Phison controllers that failed in under a year before.

All SSD brands routinely change controller and storage cell types to meet profit targets and unit prices. There is no 100% trustworthy brand - Adata, Crucial, Kingston, Samsung have all done this.

When SSDs fail, they fail suddenly and (mostly) irretrievably - you will NOT be able to recover data.

You must back up your important data if you don't want to lose it.

Sekian.

Nonsense. This is true a decade ago. Not anymore. Nowadays tlc is reliable and fast enough to be what slc were back then.

Even samsung flagship 990 Pro is TLC.
WD SN850x is TLC
SK Hynix Platinum P41 is TLC

These three are the most powerful (and most expensive) ssd you can buy in market to date.

MLC is now reserved to the highest end of datacenter storage you can't find without a special procurement.

SLC is pretty much nonexistent nowadays. Go find and tell me which ssd model after 2015 that use SLC, if you can find one.

While I was working on an Aftershock notebook, discovered OEM Samsung SSD doesn't work properly with Samsung Magician.

Similar to how OEM AMD Radeon doesn't work properly with AMD Adrenalin. Sure, can display ... but other features (right now I forget, because I game mostly on APU or discrete (branded) nVidia) ... definitely will stay away from OEM AMD Radeon and OEM Samsung SSD.

Go find and tell me which ssd model after 2015 that use SLC, if you can find one.

slc still have its advantage, but lol will people buy slc ssd or not? i doubt ppl want to pay x times price for home use ssd.

SLC nowadays are rarely produced for consumer and prosumer SSDs anymore, so you can't really get it.

Slc is all advantage. Everything good about ssd - except it does not exist anymore, and nobody misses it.

All performant consumer and datacenter ssd now made with 3d nand, for example vnand or bics which is tlc or qlc only. The only part in your ssd that use SLC these days is the buffer, like 12gb for 1tb sn850x, and allegedly around 100gb for 990pro 1tb, but even that is just pSLC, which is just MLC/TLC running in single bit mode like SLC.

Even for datacenter use TLC is deemed more than good enough. The latest Samsung PM9xx line is TLC.
Any more performance/reliability demand they have to enter xpoint segment, like kioxia's FL6 which can go like 60 DWPD. (avg high end ssd is around 0.3 DWPD)

MLC is already at the end of phasing out stage. The last ssd that I know that were using MLC was 970pro which were released 5 years ago.

Mainstream mid/low tier drive is all qlc nowadays. But even that is magnitude better than mlc from decade ago. To put into perspective, if we look at this spec from Samsung
https://semiconductor.samsung.com/resources...English_AUS.pdf
2012s MLC 840pro were rated around 150tbw/1tb,
while equivalent 2020s QLC 870qvo is 360tbw while retaining same speed or being slightly faster.

Tldr - 'You should look for SLC/MLC' is not even an argument nowadays unless you are parroting what you have heard 10 years ago - and you won't even find it in the market anymore anyway.

My shipping last time was RM25. Now is RM30. Buyandship.
You should notneed to claim warranty for SSD as it more durable than traditional hard disk.

Wah that's cheap. Including tax?

Anyway I don't understand your last statement. SSD is more durable, then why need to claim warranty? Or you meant to type shouldn't? That aside, means there's no local warranty is it? What if the ssd reaches us dead-on-arrival?

No tax biggrin.gif cause it was below RM500.

SSD will outlive any traditional hard disk. That's why buy new SSD. Don't buy a used one. Buy from good site like Amazon or Newegg.

Sorry. Typo.
