SSD like Adata, Kingston, Crucial... Would you recommend? If ok, safe some tokens from big brands like Samsung, SanDisk, WD, Seagate...

Thanks guys for the informative feedbacks!
So, other than these "secondary" brands, those cheaper brands better ignoring?

Which model specifically from those brands?

I use this as a guide and find for reviews of a particular model online: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1092033-ssd-tier-list/
*
Ok. Definitely will check that out!

QUOTE(zuozi @ Dec 24 2021, 12:40 PM)
Due to chip shortage copy and paste from LTT because so lazy to type

NOTE - MANY MANUFACTURERS ARE REPLACING THE KEY COMPONENTS OF SSDS (CONTROLLERS & NAND FLASH) WITH INFERIOR COMPONENTS WITHOUT INFORMING THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THIS LIST IS BASED ON THE COMPONENTS (CONTROLLERS & NAND FLASH) THAT THE SSD CAME WITH  AT THE TIME OF LAUNCH.

Sorry ah... What does it mean?😅

QUOTE(ktek @ Dec 24 2021, 12:58 PM)
see the size will learn quality. aim 500g or 512g full
not 480g 960g those eco shit
*
Oh... Ya hor. Whats the different and why there were 240G 480G 960G? These types are not proper SSD? SD card like?

Wow... Guys, really appreciate your feedbacks and super informative to me! Now I only know the SSD does include the DRAM! 😂 No wonder some are cheap and some higher price!

So. If for Video Editing, Recording, a lot of Read & Write in real time, it's best to get a DRAM SSD , right?
If, only for Storage purpose, DRAM-less SSD will do, correct?
How about for OS ?

As everyone mentioned above, Crucial MX seems the best choice in overall?

QUOTE(netmatrix @ Dec 26 2021, 06:37 PM)
Simple summary for TS.

- If your laptop/ desktop is over 5 years, no need buy expensive SSD.
- If you PC only has SATA cable (desktop) or SATA M.2 (laptop) connection, all SATA SSD speed in this category are 5xxMB/s only. So no need expensive SSD.
- There is nothing wrong buying cheap SSD from brands like Colorful, HkVision, Walram and such.

Basically companies like Kingston, Adata, Sandisk and practically all other companies that does not make their own chips, buy from other chip making companies to make their SSD.

A simple solution to reliability problems is make an over provisioning partition in the SSD. There are many guides for this. Its an option if you need reliability. As proof, if you install Samsung SSD Magician utility, it even has over provisioning option in it. Even Samsung one of the best quality SSD you can buy has this as backup plan.

The only problem i have so far with cheap SSD is the controller. Some of them are weak in a sense that it cannot retain the custom firmware (from the company brand that made it) that was programmed inside and it reverted to controller chip firmware that caused unreadable problems. I have experienced Kingston & Patriot reverting to factory SATAFIRM that caused the SSD to be unreadable. You would probably not have this problem with Samsung, Crucial and Intel.

Super appreciate your best comment! You are really informative enough 🤩

My recent SSD just ran out of space 🤣 would you mind to suggest 1 for me (cheap and best in the range)?
Erm, I'm with Old Mac Desktop (SATA). Still, the 1TB SSD I wish to get is best to apply in my Mac Desktop as well as for External/Portable Drive.

Appreciate in Advance!

Thanks for suggesting! Surprised me, Samsung consider as Cheap SSD?!

QUOTE(xperiaVuser @ May 26 2022, 11:16 AM)
Crucial Mx500 , Samsung 870 Evo. If you decide to go with the 870 Evo, make sure the firmware is the latest one. Earlier batches got problem with the firmware
*
Thanks for the information! Crucial MX500 seems a lot of recommendation!

QUOTE(gnome @ May 26 2022, 11:23 AM)
I've been using adata sx8200 1gb nvme (main C: drive) and crucial Mx500 1tb ssd (games drive)

Both works flawlessly. Adata around 1 year plus while Mx500 almost 3 years plus
*
Thanks for the testimony!
How much around for MX500 & SX8200?

What Mac desktop? Got Thunderbolt?

I'm using Adata SX8200 Pro Gen3 NVME in an external Thunderbolt case. My Mac mini is only 256GB internal. Latest SSD I have is XPG S70 Blade Gen4 NVME in a PC.

As for SATA SSDs, if old computer, just any cheap cheap SATA SSD. Samsung is always expensive. My old MacBooks and Windows laptops using PNY CS900, Kingston A400, Adata SU650 & Topmore TP-100. Hackintosh using Sandisk SSD Plus.
*
Haha. 1 super old Mac (2008) No Thunderbolt, 1 unit of 2013 office setup with thunderbolt!

I was thinking of NVME too. But, as you see, my old Mac needs an NVME external drive? Or just a very normal SSD with a USB Casing?

If yes, price for a SSD 1TB seems around RM380 - RM420 , right?
QUOTE(Joey Christensen @ May 26 2022, 03:48 PM)
Crucial (if not mistaken BX500 series). I've been using it for my old laptop and PS4. Both still working until today. I've lost count the years I've bought it. Seems a-OK for me.
*
Wow... Crucial, cool! Thank you for your recommendation!

Maybe not as your main drive. I use Samsung for the main boot drive, and cheap SSD for storage/games.

That way your important files don't get exposed to such risks.

Anyway there is little problem with the reliability of these SSDs tbh. Just go for it. No point paying more for perceived quality when it really doesn't matter.
*
Thanks for advice!
Which means, as external drive no need expensive SSD? so, price like RM350 - RM400 for 1TB good enough?

Check Lazada. Should be about rm400 plus minus. Definitely pick local reseller rather than overseas.
*
Ok! Appreciate your advice again! And yes, I always go for local seller!
Lazada is better than Shopee?
Btw, which seller did you buy from?

Wow... Wow... That's awesome! Incredible, 2GB read & 1.5GB Write? Possible? Which brand and model?

QUOTE(pretty23 @ May 31 2022, 10:10 AM)
IT product got factory sealed.

once open mean GG.

CCP a lot fake products but seem not many in messia yet.
*
I see! Sorry, what's CCP?

QUOTE(thexs @ May 31 2022, 11:14 AM)
If you’re talking external = portable connect with USB type then yeah even more reason to go for the cheapest one since it’s not being used as frequently.

Just find the cheapest one from a reputable brand on Shopee/Lazada. Last time I bought a 1TB Sandisk for 450 as my game/storage drive for my laptop. Still working after 2 years of daily use.

Reputable means not some unknown kingkong Chinese brand. Adata, Sandisk, Kingston, Silicon Power are ok.
*
OH... I see! Got it with thanks!
I saw some even as low as RM350 RM320 and brand like Acer, Adata...
PNY is China SSD?

but some time there got big suprise too. Like the 280g 900P really is a good product. Warranty until 2024/2025 some more.
*
Oh? You mean used SSD?

QUOTE(thexs @ May 31 2022, 03:08 PM)
No problem.

Easiest way to check whether it’s acceptable is to search the same model and read reviews on Amazon. If there’s hundreds or thousands of reviews and it’s still 4+ stars then ok. PNY and Adata I think still ok

I SEE! Sure, will do!

Honestly micron warranty very bad in messia. If you want good warranty then pick intel / samseng / seagate. WD a bit drop but still better than micron in messia.
*
Oh ... I see. Friend mentioned about Micron cause some used computer shop offered SSD Upgrade with Micron. They as well as selling used Micron.

Price also not cheap I think, around RM400+- for 1TB 😲
