Will be renovating my new home, i'm considering using Vinyl for the whole house, due to it's many choices and it's versatile, but in terms of durability, pros and cons, anyone can share and advice ?

I'm also open to suggestions for what kind of flooring design / materials is better, or other alternatives.

this is the research i have done before, not sure if they are accurate enough, anyone is welcome to correct me if any inaccuracy
people usually go for Vinyl because of the wood alike pattern

Vinyl
-there is SPC, WPC
-SPC is better than WPC because SPC has no foaming agent added, giving it a stronger, more robust core while stone is stiffer, sturdier and less resilient.
-it is good to check with the vendor if the Vinyl is phthalate-free
-costs from RM4.50-12 /sqft

Laminated/engineered flooring
-some argued that it is not that good because it has formaldehyde, some don't care thou
-costs around RM10-14/sqft

Wood flooring
-some people prefer it because it is good to 'step' on
-high maintenance, easily stain or tamper
-costs around RM4-14/sqft

Tile
-costs around RM9-60

there are other materials like terrazzo which I have no knowledge on, you can research on your own smile.gif

Vinyl flooring perfect for gym or kid's playroom.

Laminated perfect for rooms without attached bathrooms. Usually for staircase or man's cave.

Timber flooring perfect for everything but costly. Maintenance is easy. Just magic mop and monthly wet mopping with a proper floor cleaner (non acid).

Tiles would be more hardwearing IMO if you have heavy furniture. Laminated wood may have compressed at the furniture legs spot if the furniture is too heavy (point load issue). Since wanna reno put in 2x2 tiles lah, look nice. You can even choose grout colour to match (davcogrout) wub.gif

If mancave/womancave/garage/workshop can use the rubber flooring, nonslip and easy to clean.

Laminated wood (lego-like planks) tend to be noisy as well. I have this issue in my rumaweep.

The vinyl you mean is the soft thin type? Abit like rubber, and flexible?

always put darker colours for vinyl flooring. This gives a more 'atas' look like in 5 star hotels. Dont make the same mistake that people made by putting light colours...cos that makes the place look so 'biasa' and nothing more. My neighbour saw mine...and she chose to put lighter colours...and at the end she regretted like mad. That's the typical Chinese 'taste' lo....must always choose lighter colours.

It depends on the overall house design, no?

If you're are into Muji style, light coloured wooden floor gives the illusion of spacious and clean.

Contrast is the way to go. If your walls are white... takkan you put a light brown vinyl flooring? Mana ada contrast?? GO for Dark brown la baru nampak the contrast.

if your walls are deep colours such as dark brown, Purple, orange etc...then by all means put light colour vinyl flooring to make the contrast look nicer.

Kinda disagree with this statement. Dark can look so uncle as well. It really depends on owner's preference, but if cannot or unable to make up your mind, just go with lighter or mid range color, avoid dark color. But again, really depends on your overall decor and renovation.

But if you considering, and if you have budget, my take is, do it, get SPC, dont need to worry about what is SPC, vinyl, wood... wood is for rich people, SPC is for everybody else. As simple as that. It can really change your entire house's mood. It's the best thing i've done for my house, and i felt that the 15k spent is totally worth it. FYI, 15k is for 2 storey and stairs.

Can’t agree more the muji concept has to be light clean and simple and to give it a bit of contrast one can choose to leverage green plants etc. Darker colours will give it old furniture looks which may be older generations oreference
