A little context: I have an accounting degree and I've completed all my ACCA exams in September. Recently, I've completed an interview for the position of audit associate in PwC. I'm also scheduled to have an interview with EY soon. If all things go well, I will have to choose between PwC and EY.
According to one of my friends, EY pays a higher base salary than PwC. Is this true? I understand that the audit life is going to be filled with long work hours, but from what I've read online, PwC seems to have a better work culture. It also seems to me that PwC values English language competency more than the other big 4 firms (the PwC English assessment was rather challenging).
Does anyone have any input on 1) the salary and 2) the work culture in these two companies? Thank you.

I rarely hear PwC staff complain about PwC. There are complaints but it's rare.
But I often hear a lot (really a lot) of EY, KPMG, and Deloitte staff complaining about their workplace.
I hope this would give you a clue.
Yes, EY is consistently the paymaster but there are other factors to consider too in the long run.

1) salary difference is negligible (maybe 100 - 200). big4 always benchmark between themselves.
2) true pwc has better culture and you are right they value english competency.

just two points to make:
1) one of my friend's daughter currently works in audit in EY and she loves her job despite extra hours.
2) it's true that i also have never heard people complaining about PwC culture.
there is no one size fits all. different people think and experience differently. i would think either one would be fine.

I can tell all Big 4 are in dire need of audit staffs now so you will be squeezed regardless of "working culture" differences. Might as well pick the highest pay one.

If TS got the intention to go SG to work in the future, PwC will be a better choice due to internal transfer.
