Since now Himedia don't launch new models, I'm inclined with the new Zidoo boxes to test out the Dolby Vision setting. Price of Z9X so expensive now  console.gif

Appreciate all the feedbacks

i hear u, i feel u. biggrin.gif

i m at a loss as to what to buy upgrade to next too.

z9x is probably a good bet for both video and audio playback, from what i read and hear.

but it is the other lesser features like navigation, control, android apps compatibility that may bear u down.

i never had a zidoo but had a couple of AC Ryans back in the day - realtek chipsets are good, no doubt.

perhaps we have to accept we can't have it all in one device/box.

even now, i am using 5 boxes laugh.gif - on 3 TVs/home theaters - for various purposes - local playback, astrogo, china apps included.

i still hope himedia will launch a worthy successor to the mighty Q10pro!

I remember I had an AC Ryan playon those days, super un-utilised , just for the sake of playing RMVB files hahahha

navigation n control no issues for the zidoo, personally for me, I prefer it over q10 pro, more user frenly

but android apps compatibility tat one I cannot advice, I never really use it

hi media android apps for me, not tat usable for my usage, DS video, DS file not stable, kept log out
navigation also not usable for me
Disney hotstar couldnt get it to work
*
AC Ryan POHD was the best there was at that time, i really loved it.

bought a mini too!

years later, i saw that himedia cud do more... so i sold both of them, decent prices too! thumbsup.gif

there is no perfect box for everyone... which is why we need choices... and choices are now rather limited. sad.gif

yea, I had tat POHD

waste money hahah, never really used it

the amount of box we bought since 07/08 till now hahahah

from TVIX, Popcorn, AC Ryan, Dune, WDTV, Himedia now Zidoo hahahha
where to sell ar? but I think abit outdated dy
I tried my Dune still can work, TVIX I didnt not try, AC Ryan I think I pass to my fren recently, popcorn n wdtv dunno throw where dy
@Jjoottt 800+ I think ok la, for its function I think its really good (for my usage)

or you want buy my Z9s? I don't mind getting the Z9x hahahha

but I'm purely using it for NAS playback only and no nothing else

I prefer HT 2.0 more than 4.0
*
POHD was super for me, excellent for local playback, not so good for streaming.

passed them to someone, sold them at mudah or something.

boxes, i have used only 3 brands - AC Ryan in the beginning, now Himedia and Tanix.

my needs are simple - local payback (but must have HD audio) and astrogo.

ATV apps like Netflix, UnifiTV, iQiyi, Youtube, can use direct on TVs, very reliable, zero maintenance.

I tried astrogo on the zidoo or Himedia once before, fren came over, wanna watch epl
had a really hard time trying to install on it, then log in, after log in, cant navigate
end up he watch it on his phone.......

I think all these players I have since those days have no issue on audio streaming to receiver/soundbar
only issues are some players cannot decode dts, then got issues for those who playback directly on their teebee

btw I think most or all teebee now also can play files off USB right? mkv n all sorts
*
Astrogo app is a tricky one - they try very hard to block people using on any TV, push them to use on mobile devices only.

for a year or 2, it worked on Q10pro, now no more as they successfully blocked it.

very few boxes can run it smoothly; even ATV cannot; tanix is a rare one - can.

audio... while u can play USB on TV, their audio output is typically poor... i cannot accept. tongue.gif

then, there is max HDD size, navigation limitations, poor video, etc... becos TVs are built for display, not as a playback player.

I think astrogo is meant to be on mobile anyway

if play on usb, still can use hdmi arc right? audio will still be out from receiver or soundbar
decoding should be done there right?
*
most tvs whether hdmi arc or direct output is limited to lossy digital, i.e. dts, dd only.

some can do dd+.

the top end TVs now have e-arc, supposedly can do atmos too... but i m not sure if it is built for online netflix atmos or playback atmos.

i have not known any tv that can do dtshdma, ddtreuhd or dtsx playback.

I'm using Zidoo Z1000 Pro for few months now, overall quite satisfy with the product, but the bluray full menu support sometime got problem, cant really use for some BDISO/BDMV.

Quite enjoy with the products. Originally was thinking to buy Z9X, but after talking with the sales guy then decide go for Z1000 Pro.

Hopefully the bluray menu issue can be solve in next firmware update.
*
thanks for comments! thumbup.gif

z9x, z10pro, z1000pro, even z3000 use same chipset RTD1619DR, am i right?

yeah, firmware improvement may be able to solve BD menu glitches.

futeko has this to say:

QUOTE
UHD-BD/BD/DVD/BD-3D ISO FULL MENU UHD Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray/3D Blu-Ray/DVD ISO full menus. BDJ 1.0/1.2/2.0. Supports BD region switch. Note, BD and UHD-BD ISO full menu support is not 100% due to continuous evolution of BD and UHD specification. Where no full menu ISO support the video can be accessed by text menu.
https://www.futeko.com/products/MP109.php

himedia q10pro wasn't 100% either but with last update, full BDMV playback incl menus are almost perfect now.

like to ask u for z1000pro...

1. the HDD slot - what's the max capacity?

2. BDMV (those m2ts, not ISO) - do u get hiccups with 1080p or 2160p or both?

3. BDMV 2160p, MEL or FEL - does dolby vision work good?

4. can the box playback all lossless audio types - dd, dd+, ddtruehd, ddatmos, dts, dtshdma, dtsx?

and... i do like the elegant look of the z1000pro!! thumbsup.gif

biggrin.gif yeah, almost there!

QUOTE(cyclone2 @ Sep 7 2021, 08:39 PM)
Yes, z9x, z10pro, z1000pro, even z3000 is using same chipset RTD1619DR.....

Not sure about the HDD max capacity, coz the one I put in just 1.5TB. The max capacity is not my concern as I mostly using NAS.

the BDMV and m2ts so far no issue playing 1080p or 4k contents, most my 1080p is run perfectly on Z1000 pro, other than menu issue on 4k contents, I noticed some movie cannot play not sure is due to my VS10 setting as I force it output as DV. Maybe I should try change to auto.

I not sure how to identify is MEL or FEL for those 4K movie, But so far my setting is force to output using VS10.

Lastly, I used bitstream to my denon 3700 so the audio type I didnt test out. But based on spec, it is covered most of the format.

1 of the reason i choose Z1000pro also because of the outlook. My old player is Dune been used for more than 10 yrs but was having problem after lightning strike.
*
again, thanks for comments.

bolded - i think i know what u mean.

wait a bit longer.... please update when u get new firmware, thanks!

so far is Jacky Cheung and Tsai Chin this 2 cannot do bluray menu. it is just 1080p only....but it upscale to 4k.
I dont trust wifi even the unit very close to my router, even my router is AX86U, i still prefer to use LAN cable as very stable.

in fact my home theater setup all using LAN cable to connect.... hahaa....

I off all the wifi on those devices.
*
BDMV, wifi sucks... always lag, i give up. biggrin.gif

LAN or local playback best.

this bit is very interesting:

QUOTE
While playback of Dolby Vision is limited to mp4 and mkv so that there is no playback of DV with UHD BDs, the same does not apply do HDR10+ and its triggered for full menu playback as well.
YouTube’s 4K HDR specification (VP 9.2) do work with file playback, not for the YouTube app though.
In 2020 its suffice to say that all major HD audio formats like Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA/HR and DTS:X are bit streamed flawlessly.

if i read that right, DV will kick in with full menu if the UHD BDMVs are in HDR10+ but not HDR - gotta look out for that! biggrin.gif

ok, audio pass thru looks like a breeze, v good for older videos. thumbsup.gif

I havent got time to really try it out yet

although I got it to show VS10 dolby vision logo on the tv yesterday

im not too sure is it placebo or not, but I keep telling myself macam looks a bit better

I did tweak some weird setting and I notice the colours were off, then I decided to just follow some forummer setting on the SG site

I dont have that much UHD (sir David series ok or not?) but can test test, I havent even help cyclone to test the BDMV issues and also updating Jjoottt on the DV image

HDR vs HDR10+...

recently setting up a new custom NAS to store those UHD movie.... slowly replacing those 1080P movie
that's the least we shud do.

in 5 years time, 1080p will be a thing of the past... ok for very old movies but not the newer ones.

when video+audio equipment prices "normalize" for 4kHDR+atmos/dtsx, the best results will be realized.

i m patient. laugh.gif

hey guys.... if u can point me in the right direction...

where r the discussions/threads on Atmos upward firing speakers?

just planning ahead.... current 5.1->5.1.2... is this going to be any good?! laugh.gif

my room is quite small, low ceiling... maybe it will work OK..?

the 2 atmos speakers - r they usually placed on the floor or on top of the 2 main speakers to decr distance to ceiling?

if latter, problem... my main speakers top are curved, not flat!

which speakers are most popular... wharfdale, JBL..??

cannot do downwards firing speakers ar?
*
Its plaster ceiling but i really duwan to cut it up.

Ceiling height is rather low, room small.... so maybe the reflection may work.

But after reading a bit more, seems many say its a lousy idea, little effect.

Then, there is this atmos virtual effect from new AVRs.... same, some say ok some say useless.

So... rclxub.gif
