Hi sifu, thanks for being here to help us, so here seeking for suggestions for my sibling.

She will use Laptop for just Office work and Zoom, remote meeting and casual stuff like web surf and watch videos.

Budget : around 2.5-3k, prefer thin and light with good looking design.
Just like these two that she had shortlisted before but then feels like need something better:

1. HUAWEI matebook D15 core i3, good looking and okay ram/ssd, battery claims is quite attractive, but three points that make her gave up: not bundled with MS office, dated processor and weird webcam placement
2. Lenovo ideapad 3i intel core i3, 11th gen, but still i3 so I will rather her get ryzen version, also 3 series have poor battery

Requirements: good design, thin and light, decent battery.
Fine with non upgrade able 8gb ram and small ssd.
Best if comes with MS office bundled, seen like selected models have
Series to avoid when possible: thinkpad (don't like blacky design, plasticity?)

Wait time: n/a, not urgent, have at least 2 spare pc/laptops as disposal (aging and pending ssd upgrade)
I recommend her to look for lenovo website for more options, because on shopee not much lenovo options especially amd version, mostly sells intel models only
Thanks

hi zm fong

im actually looking at thinkpad model E14 and E15, both have different storage type.

E14 - 512GB SSD M.2 2242 NVMe TLC
E15 - 512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe

E15 is using MLC ssd? do you have info on this?
*
These models uses TLC from Western Digital/SanDisk. Model PC SN530.

Although depending on availability may get slightly different model.

1. Budget : RM2k-RM2.5k (prefer around RM2k but I read that no decent models <RM2k which is so sad esp they don't last long  cry.gif )

2. Usage  : Normal browsing, youtube, facebook, instragram

3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) : 14", light-weight, battery life the longer the better maybe like 5 hours with normal browsing (if it's possible)

Last year I just purchase this Swift 3 (AMD Ryzen 5) at only RM2.5k, noticed price has increased to close to RM3k now? I thought logically price should be lower compared to last year?
*
Chip shortage and part shortage still continues at least until next year

Wait time?

For those who looking for budget laptops (especially around 2k-3k range) Please note of possible build quality/qc issues, some budget models has sacrificed build quality to lower down the price point

This is why sifu ZM Fong take build quality as one of most important considerations when recommending laptops

This is how QC/quality issues shows especially on the hinge part. The hinge is broken despite that it is newly bought laptop. Model is Dell Inspiron 3000 series (2021 model)

Maybe because of warranty / after sales service previously bad experience for him... both under highpoint HSN

Ouch. Forgot to mention that I need 16GB ram. Maybe 1 month
*
If you are okay with integrated graphics, the most recent igpu like intel iris XE or Vega 8(ryzen u/h) can run csgo at medium settings at most for well over 60fps, or if you don't mind low settings, can reach 100+fps

However this also requires that laptop comes with fast dual channel memory. Since you require 16gb of fast dual channel memory (ddr4-3200 or lpddr4x 4266 is preferred for best igpu performance). So you need bump up to 3.5k+ still or wait for lenovo shipping

Edit: you can try this with some discount code (pm zm fong)
ThinkBook 14 Gen 3 AMD ryzen 7

Part Number:  21A20078MJ
Ship within 4 weeks (at least 1 months)

Or ThinkBook 14s Gen 2 (intel i5 11th)

Part Number:  20VA002SMJ
Same shipping 4 weeks

QUOTE(revolnia @ Nov 23 2021, 12:23 AM)
I see. I will take a look during 12.12 sales (if any) for legion 5i or legion 5 (AMD).

Question: Actually, I was looking at 14 inch gaming laptop for budget RM4.2k but seems cannot find it except Asus ROG Strix and Asus TUF series. I already take a look at those 2 Asus model and the design is a bit off / bulky / keypad not nice.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 seems nice but it is out of my budget:
a) https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-zephyru...rus-g14-series/ - GA401QH - GTX1650 4GB - RM 4899
b) https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-zephyru...rus-g14-series/ - GA401IH -  GTX 1650 4GB - RM 4699

Legion 15 inch (AMD / Intel) is more cheaper compare to Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 price.

I already take a look also at HP Omen and HP Victus but it is also more than RM 4.5k budget. Do you have any recommendation of 14 inch laptop with GC of 1650 or 3050? Or the Legion 5 is the only option?

Thank you.

Note: If other people want to suggest any laptop for price RM4.5k is welcomed. I went to Sunway Pyramid Asus store last weekend to see the Asus laptop. Gosh, Asus laptop quite difficult to see the actual display model.

MyProLife: The one that you recommend for ThinkBook is out of stock sad.gif

Maybe Acer Swift X BUT (yes a big but) ryzen 5 comes with 8gb soldered onboard ram and ryzen 7 with 16gb ram is close to 5k budget

You seems confused about the size choices. So maybe state maximum kilograms you can accept for portability? Some 15 incher with around 2.2-2.5kg may be okayish for guys

Otherwise for 14 incher with discrete graphics, sadly no much choices left other than swift x, rog zephyrus g14 or much overpriced models like zenbooks/vivobook pro or razer blades

QUOTE(revolnia @ Nov 24 2021, 11:32 AM)
Yeah, I might confused about the size choices. I would like to have portability with maximum of 1.8kg. I take a look at Asus Vivobook Pro 14x OLED with RTX 3050 with price of RM4799-RM4899 which it is okay for me. But when I check out the review, most people telling that even though it does have the dGPU but it is not a gaming laptop. I wonder why ...

Noted about the Acer Swift X 8gb soldered ram.

Currently, I am minimize my selection into these 3 selection:
a. Asus Vivobook Pro 14x OLED with RTX 3050 (waiting for color comet gray instead of silver)
b. Asus Rog Zephyrus g14
c. Lenovo Legion 5 (15 inch) .. Not sure want to go for intel or AMD

Any recommendation based on these 3 laptop above?

Thank you.
*
obviously neither Swift X nor Vivobook X series are gaming laptops because they sacrifice the GPU power limit(MAX-Q suffix mana btw?) and maybe some CPU power limit(PL2 limit may be lower) to achieve the lighter weight of sub 1.8kg, they are targeted at creative professionals.

you wish to have max 1.8 kg, so you need to sacrifice the power as said above. and Legion 5 series are not that light either (at least 2.3kg iirc) but with more power limit.

OLED seems compelling for that ASUS 14X laptop, but do u really need that? take note of some minor disadvantages such as possibly lack of DC dimmer, glossy screen (ALL OLED screen are like that for now) and possible screen burn in. but if you thing the superior color representation is deal maker/breaker for you, then go for it (especially for creative professionals PS photo edit or PR/AE video post-pro or designers whose care about that color representation)

1. Budget : 4-5k

2. Usage  : Daily use (Netflix, YouTube, video calls), gaming (mostly indie games, okay with running AAA games at low settings), tend to have 50 chrome tabs at a same time

3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) : Good battery life, weight around 2kg is fine. Better if there's some form of international warranty.

Moving overseas in early Jan so I can't wait for too long.
*
you may consider these options if you are fine with lower settings yet still needs dGPU

a. Asus Vivobook Pro 14x OLED with RTX 3050 (waiting for color comet gray instead of silver)
b. Asus Rog Zephyrus g14
c. Acer Swift X R7 16gb ram (avoid R5 8gb ram because onboard, non-upgradeable mem)

you need at least 16gb ram, so perhaps above options barely acceptable because of onboard ram config, otherwise get gaming laptops that having options of upgrade up to 32gb ram eg. Nitro 5 or Legion 5 but with heavier 2.2+kg weight

Thanks for the recommendation! Any other brands for consideration besides ASUS and Acer? Haven't had very good experiences with the two brands nor heard much good things about them. Usually around 2-3 years mark then CMI dy.
*
you will need to give up some international warranty if you choose any besides ASUS and acer because in Malaysia as i remember only these two offers such warranty (asus 2 yrs int or acer 1st year)

can you consider buy laptop overseas later or want it now?

can you get heavier gaming laptop instead if you dont mind?

these above 2 questions because lenovo shipping is quite long and hp or dell do not offer such spec in light weight package for your budget.

Ah I see. Yes I'm planning to get it here instead of overseas - at least it's one less thing to worry about when I settle down there.

How much heavier are we talking about for HP or Dell?
*
around 2.5kg or more with HP victus or Dell G15

there's sub 2kg option from dell inspiron 15/16plus but over 5k, design looks so 'cheap' for that price

Thank you for the explanation and to be honest I do not know about the MAX-Q. I tried to find information about MAX-Q for Asus Rog Zephyrus g14 (GTX 1650 4GB) (https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-zephyrus/2021-rog-zephyrus-g14-series/) but could not find it on the website

I called the customer service and they told me normal boost is 50W and Dynamic Boost is 65W. By having this information, this considered okay and slightly a gaming laptop?

Btw, how to verify the information of GPU power limit that they told me?

I might going to lowyat this weekend to see the laptop it self.
*
Is okay wattage because 50w base is standard for 1650 mobile

Max q of 1650 mobile is even lower like 30w on ms***i GF63

To verify the wattage, you will need to run a game or benchmark and download HWInfo64 to monitor it

Thank you. But what I meant was, how to search in google on for a specific laptop to know their graphic card GPU limit?

Btw, is there any possibility that laptop A and B have same same graphic card but different GPU limit? What cause it to have different value?

I tried to check for Asus G14 gpu limit specifically and compared the value that has been given by customer service (because that guy macam take a long time to answer my question and not pretty confident about it)
*
Yes google search for reviews to see

Yes. Because different chassis thermal design

thank you for the explanation. I might narrow it to 2021 Rog Zephyrus G14 series and Lenovo Legion 5. The price of Lenovo Legion 5 is 100 cheap compared to Asus G14 and it have more better graphic card but yeah, it will come to 14-15 inch/weight and G14 does not have webcam! zzz.

I went to Harvey Norman and tried the G14. It seems good and lightweight but yeah gonna take a look at Legion 5 this coming weekend. Last question for me to you, if were you Legion 5 or Asus G14?
I would like to get confirmation on the value of GPU limit (Max Q) for:
a. Asus Vivobook Pro 14X OLED (N7400, 11th Gen Intel) - NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3050
b. Legion 5 (15", Gen 6 ) (Phantom Blue) - Part Number:  82JW0067MJ - NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 3050 4GB GDDR6
c. Legion 5i (15", Gen 6) (Phantom Blue) - Part Number:  82JK0032MJ - NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 3050 4GB GDDR6
d. 2021-rog-zephyrus-g14-series - https://rog.asus.com/my/laptops/rog-zephyru...rus-g14-series/ - GA401QH - GTX1650 4GB

Last question for me to you, if were you Legion 5 or Asus G14?

Thank you to both of you for answering all my question  thumbup.gif   thumbsup.gif
*
both different type for different target. i worry about your back if you tends to carry 3kg+ (2.5kg+close to 1kg brick) like daily.

so is up to you to decide though.

G14 webcam is one of dealbreaker for some but can be easily fixed with usb clip-on webcam.

a. ASUS 14X OLED: 35W base, up to 50W boost (according to ultrabookreview on amd version)

b/c legion: 80w base, up to 95w boost

d. 50w base, boost 65w according to ASUS CS/product guide https://www.asus.com/event/2021/productguid...ROGPGQ32021.pdf

Lenovo lineup is so messy (so are some pc oems like asus or acer)

Yoga Slim series is clamshell traditional form factor

Yoga (not slim) is real 2in1 convertible

Since don't know when some years ago Yoga line is no longer exclusive 2in1 lineup since yoga s/slim series out to replace ideapad 7xx series

Need help asap guys, tomorrow must use laptop for class and gaming. Im thinking to buy acer nitro 5 with 3060 and amd 5800h but many YouTuber not recommend it due to it have a lot of issues but it was the only laptop that cheap enough to have amd and 3060 in it. But many youtuber recommended the lenovo legion 5 pro but with 3070 is expensive but many ytber said legion is g.o.a.t of laptop. With 2k major differences  between lenovo and acer is gsync and gpu, idk if gsync make any difference.

Acer nitro = rm 4.8k
Legion pro 5 3070 = 6.8k

Here’s the thing extra 2k for 4-7 extra fps to me is not worth it but my MAIN ISSUE issue which one will last long in term of not gpu but from cooling, screen, speakers and etc. Btw im using only microsoft office and my most demanding game is cod warzone
*
If urgent then no choice le. Just get nitro 5 ready stock. Legion 5 hard to get ready stock anywhere unless you wait
