Think about your use case as your look into USTs.

Some. They're not called short-throw projector. They are ultra short-throw (UST) projector.

Never heard of this one but we're looking at our options. This is for a second projector at the office for semi-portable use. Based on just general specs, this would be okay enough to use for the office. Not for home theater.

Because of the size, it doesn't seem that it'd be bright for daylight use, even with an ALR screen. It's small size means the light engine (DMD and laser path) is small, which means the laser/s is/are small.

The size of the screen depends on how close it is to the wall. The closer it is, the smaller the screen size but also the brightest.

You may experience the rainbow effect with the projector. Since it's a single-chip DLP projector, it means the projector needs to create a single video frame into red, green and blue. Because it's a laser-based light source, it's less noisy than lamp-based (not LED-based) projectors.

If this is meant as the primary video device, you need a screen. Even for more expensive USTs, you need the screen to have a proper flat screen. Otherwise you'll see imperfections of your non-white wall.

Small footprint means small sound. The Dangbei is small so don't expect great sound.

This projector is also being sold on Ali Express. The remote doesn't show the Netflix button. So you need a separate Google TV device to play your streaming content.

The casting feature may need an optional app installed on your phone.

Most big electronic brands do not make UST or even just projectors. That's the reason why you don't see them in physical stores. Believe it or not, people buys by a brand. The fact that you need a screen is the other thing. Since they are sold separately, people see it as a hassle.

With a TV, you just need to put it on the table or mount it on the wall. With a UST, you have to turn it on to get an idea where the screen should be, mount the screen and then adjust the UST. But once you set it up, it's done.

You can get a 100" ALR screen from Ali Express starting from RM1800. So then add a UST. That's the budget.

If you think 80" is too big a screen, then get a TV.

If you have living beings that love to touch the screen, do not get a UST. It'll damage the screen.

Below RM7,000 (I think it's close to RM10,000) the USTs are 1080p only. Above RM10,000 you get the 4K versions.

There are USTs that are interactive; this is for classrooms or offices, so don't get these for home. Below RM10,000 versions are only 720p.

If it's a 4K UST, it has to handle HDR10. Very few have Dolby Vision. Very few have HDR10+ or HLG.

Not all USTs can handle 3D. 3D movies benefit from USTs since you can sit less than 2 meters from the screen and it will be immersive. USTs with 3D uses 3D glasses for DLP; they are cheap now and most uses rechargeable batteries.

Lastly, take a look at this 120" UST setup.

Direct from Nexigo. But the projector and screen had to be delivered to HK. As mentioned in that thread, Nexigo can only ship to HK or SG.

You missed the Prime Day sale. That was a great value: RM11,200 for the Aurora Pro plus a 100" fresnel ALR screen with free shipping to HK/SG. Wait until Black Friday in November for further sales. The Aurora Pro will do HDR10+ with the upcoming firmware, so that's HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.

Hello sifu,

May I know where would you place this projector in your ranking list?

I want to buy one projector for my mum, one of the things I’m concerned about is how hard the interface would be if it’s not “certified” Google TV.

Another one would be availability in local market. Some of the projectors are only available from AliExpress, what if I need to return back for repairs if anything happens?

You are most welcome! My referral link is in the video. Depending on the model, some does. Some doesn't.

Hi Jayce. For the Dangbei Atom projector, how should I choose a projector screen? I don't have much budget left for the screen, but also don't want to compromise the quality as much as I can. I believe I don't need those expensive screen ones (like the ALR ones). I'm planning to get a retractable screen with tripod.
