Decided to give my BH5s one last try before I place it back into the storeroom. smile.gif

After 5 hours of continuous searching in forums, I read that problems for certain boards not being able to boot with BH5s is because of the low default voltage that it starts with. So the solution was to 'jumpstart' the RAM, by taking a cheap stick, setting a higher voltage then swapping it back.

So far, able to do 250MHz 2-2-2-6 with a few problems, which the causes might probably be the heat generation, RAM slot order or wrong placement. My board won't boot up at 2-2-2-5 no matter what sad.gif

Ya usually they do come with Heatspreder. But it's still going to be hot and need a fan blowing on them.Er...I think colin's mobo can reach 3.3v on the vDimm right? His AI7....Last time i used to have it but not so sure on the highest vDimm it has.
*
Yeah, my AI7 has options up to 3.3v for DDR voltage.

After many swaps of RAMs I found out that my Mosel Vitelic SAT5Bs cannot take 3.3v, doing so will cause BIOS checksum errors. My D43s and BH5s love getting abused, so 3.3v doesn't give any problems.

I paired the above RAMs and switched to an older BIOS that was supposingly friendlier with BH5 and wow, 250MHz 1:1 on 2.5-4-3-7 with partial PAT, 30 minutes stable. I couldn't believe it. A 10 (maybe 15) FSB gain just because of the BH5s, with reduction in timings! This achieved without my RAM coolers installed yet! biggrin.gif

So now I have a GB of memory plus the advantages of high FSB. This is just sweet. Unfortunately I can't run PAT fully enabled, seems the D43s can't stand the pressure compared to the BH5 biggrin.gif

Gonna run more tests to push it even more biggrin.gif

So far, able to run at 255FSB 1:1, with timings of 2.5-4-3-7.

After 250FSB, the processor suddenly needs a lot of voltage, don't know why sad.gif

I have a huge problem. As I left Memtest86 to test itself, Test 6 will always fail, as in more than a million errors, from every bit there is.

This problem goes away when I set a very high voltage to the processor, about more than 1.45v, which is very dangerous under stock cooling. What would happen if I didn't run my PC in a cold room sad.gif

Still can't isolate the problem, but I found a modded AI7 BIOS that might give me a wider range of AGP voltages, so I'll try that when I get home later wink.gif

After several days of extensive testing, I have come to the verdict that my AI7 is severely limiting my overclock. My RAMs perform perfectly fine with 255MHz in Memtest86, but error pop up in less than a second in Prime95.

My board only has 1.65v max to the NB, so that's the real limiting factor. I can't find any mods for it sad.gif

Wow.. Just back from tight working schedule! biggrin.gif Hm.. SATA HDD having problems with OC @ at high speed? That i ever heard before but not sure will the same thing happen to old school's like us! blink.gif Nvm.. Will test it out when i got my new WD 250G SATAII on hand and give some feed back according to this issue! icon_rolleyes.gif Will gona use this HDD as my primary drive. biggrin.gif

Btw, i found that my current ram can been stress under 250mhz speed with loosen timing without any problem. Tested with MemTest Pro edition and stress the ram for more then 6hrs.. But procs will become voltage hunger after go beyond 3.7Ghz. shocking.gif Tested with up my vcore 1.535v vcore then i can prime peacefully @ FSB1000 which is 3.75Ghz. By then my NB hit danger line.. Reached 48'c during priming.. sweat.gif

By then.. Tested all this in 1:1 ratio.. tongue.gif For sure i dont want to lost my memory bandwidth by lower down the ratio and hit speed! whistling.gif

I'm having the same 'voltage hunger' problem like you. Running at 250FSB needs a lot of voltage, about 1.45v for me, and it certainly isn't good when the heat shoots up to 70C. I think it's my cooling and PSU causing the overclocking block, with only 350W to its name laugh.gif

@fylon

My condolences to your PSU, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise... You get a new AMD rig instead and learn much more on the long run, anyway.

The last thing on our minds when we overclock is frying the components, but when it does happen you'll be much more cautious next time. smile.gif

@shinjite and kabukiawie

Yep. Still on stock. 4800 RPM on the fans, full load baby laugh.gif

Has anyone tried the latest Modbin that can unhide certain options in the BIOS? The Abit AI7 BIOS, well known among Modbin users because Abit didn't want overclockers tampering it, is finally openable with the latest version of Modbin, version 2.01.02.

It's tough to find it, but you guys can try getting it from those China overclocker sites... I'll post it up if you guys want it, hope it can unlock extra voltage options in your BIOS smile.gif

So far for my board, I've managed to unlock Thermal Monitoring, DRAM timings of 0 and Auto, and better control for thermal throttling. Sadly what I unhid were not any more options to boost overclocking. There were many empty options that Abit might have wanted to fill up, but sadly they didn't. sad.gif

Do you guys uses the P4 stock fan? Mine is very noisy, I just added a fan at the back of the chassis to suck hot air out, thinking of it will be quieter, but no. It is still noisy, forced me to open the side panel.

What fan do you guys use for the CPU?

I have a P4 3.0ht prescott.

Still using the stock heatsink here. smile.gif

i've thought of buying the sycthe ninja, is it worth it for my rig?

Doubt that, would be best to save that money to get a new PC. smile.gif

Wow, good job there sang_karim with your rig smile.gif 40C on load is nice, but I think you can push more out of it don't you think so? tongue.gif Try using Prime95 Multithread, I think it's more reliable than Orthos since it's old.

I don't trust the Gromacs test on Orthos anymore since it doesn't detect errors in Prime95 Small FFT tests. After running the said test I didn't even know that my processor wasn't stable!

And to raymond5105, my condolences to you and your family. Such people should never be forgotten in our hearts.

My first family PC used an Intel 8088 processor, and the first computer I owned was a Pentium 100.

The first processor I pushed was a Pentium 166 MMX, overclocked to 225 MHz biggrin.gif

30 cappers is you can see exactly 30 caps behind the proc there. You can count it one by one. The normal version just having 12 caps only.

Crap, can't remember if mine does has it or not. But you can identify them via the Gallatin codenames in CPU-Z right?
