They aren't stupid. They thought they can exploit China, but little do they know China don't give a fucuk about copy right. China ain't going to play by the book.

Let me give you an examples. China offered Japan Kawasaki to buy they bullet train and rail, where Japan send their engineer there to help built the infrastructure. Ok, got profit, who don't want right? Later China copy it , and Kawasaki cannot do shit to China. Cannot sue them. So JR and Hitachi built 1% of the hsr and remaining 99% done by Chinese company stealing other technology.

this was what exactly mamakthir wanted to do. Set up JVs n MNCs come here, then we learn slowly slowly develop our own technologies.

but 2 factors failed because:
1) hahahaha you know why lah. we are synonymous with failure.
2) our glorious 1990s was cut short by currency crisis attack and then China's emergence cause all greedy MNCs to pack their bags and move to China

It doesn't matter, now China is just too strong. They should have done a trump on them right from the start. What Trump did was trying to erase the past mistakes by enforcing China to follow the rules. But they don't.

Still many MNCs are falling prey to intellectual property stealing, so as we speak.
when half of the western MNCs have their business, R&D and facilities in China, also means half of their employees in sensitive areas are from PRC. Matter of time, PRC would catch up.

So the stupid ones that fall to greed are the western MNCs.
If they are smart, they would spread their risks and move back some of their operations to South East Asia
but no no, they all want to mengaut untung in China.

Instead of Western mnc is stupid, I'll say China is smart. Particularly what China did is they sacrifice short term gain to get long term gain.

Allow me to explain, in Malaysia, we invited mnc in. Then we tax them kaw kaw, no freebies. In China, they invited mnc, then give freebies, then mnc move more and more of their department into China and finally the most valuable R&D is moved into China.

In laymen terms, is something like a boss go car wash, the carwash say ok I wash your car and vacuum your car for free ok? Boss said, sure vacuum it clean please since it's free. Then the carwash said how about polish at half price, ok polish as well. Then how about I service your car for 50% of normal mechanic? But I'm no mechanics, you need teach me. Good deal. So the carwash from simple manual labor of carwash transform to mechanics services. Once they learned skill to be mechanics , no more 50% discount, they can give 20% discount, but still cheaper than other place.

Thing is it's Malaysian willing to do vacuum for free? Willing to polish car for half price? Willing to service car at 50% rate? No. We don't. So we will only be car washer.

The previous HP campus in Cyberjaya also seems like left one building only. The one opposite the IRB building, which back then was the tallest block at that area.

Dont think its that bad. MNCs can apply (and usually get) tax incentives like Pioneer Status or Investment Tax Allowance. For some pioneer status companies, they can enjoy up to 100% tax exemption. Supposed to be for 5 years but i actually found out got one MNC that renews their Pioneer status every 5 years. The CFO visits BNM or PMO, show them how many locals they employ, how much they pay local suppliers , how much they export overseas and gets a surat sokongan just like that haha

you think the franchise owner of car wash want to teach shop with 2000/day customer or 20/day customer to open mechanic service ?

therefore msia learning curve must be fast to acquire the knowledge transfer

unfortunately we no japan or s korea, so we r left far behind.

even Indonesia can at least get 200/day customer, how can we compete ?

The problem is that there are so many MNC in the same sector. If one doesn't transfer technology to China, another one will.

Take high speed rail for example: Japanese refused to transfer technology to China, but Europeans did. Now China has leapfrog both Japan and Europe.
