To answe TS's question, 80C is perfectly fine and Nvidia designed it to be like that (plus gigabyte's bios settings)

120 watts is ref spec, the custom card probably slightly higher than 120 watts. The way Nvidia's GPU Boost works is as long as the card has thermal headroom and power limit headroom, it'll run the GPU core as high as possible until one of the factor hits the limit. If it's set at 80C, it'll always adjust the GPU core's frequency until it hits 80C and maintain it there, no matter how cold or hot your room is (if power limit not yet at limit).

So if you are annoyed at the fan noise or the temperature it is running, use tools like MSI Afterburner and adjust the power limit, temperature limit, or fan speed and the 1660 super's GPU core will automatically adjust itself, it's like M A G I C

Sounds a bit on the high side I think. Maybe try improving the case airflow or ur room's surrounding temperature (on aircond/fan)

QUOTE(gacktleong @ Jan 4 2021, 04:43 PM)
it will be either the gpu or the airflow problem or my room is hot

i have searched some online reviews playing SOTR with the same gpu, averaged FPS is similar, but their temperature are way much lower (ard 70-72 degree celcius)
*
Because their ambient temperature is lower, around 22c?

Max temp controlled by software, do you install monitoring software, such as MSI Afterburner? If not mistaken the default is 81c
SOTTR is a demanding game. With monitoring software, check if your GPU usage is almost 100%, usually over 95% an indicative it is running at max.
When usage at max, as terradrive post, it will boost the clock to maximum as long as max thermal not reached. If thermal reached it will throttle the clock to make sure thermal won't exceed the limit.

If you want the GPU to run at max speed without throttling, make sure the thermal won't reach max.

My sketch for adding 2 more fan

Or is it the case air flow design is bad?

I recommend the Cooler Master NR600. It's a budget case with good front-to-back airflow in stock configuration and costs less than RM 300. You can check out the full review on Gamers Nexus.

You do aware the temperature here and foreign countries are different right? biggrin.gif

Your casing has poor intake. No, do not get the Tecware Nexus because the airflow isn't great too.

Try testing without your side panel. But usually it's our ambient temps and the card design

Im using Afterburn to monitor the temp, workload % and fan %

I have tried several testings last night and these are the outcomes:-

Scenario 1 - Took out entire mobo and gpu and test without casing, air con room
GPU Temp 62 - 65 degree celcius

Scenario 2 - Assemble back the mobo into case, like the original state of the PC, air con room
GPU Temp 80 degree celcius peak

Scenario 3 - Open both side panels, air con room
GPU Temp 70 - 72 degree celcius

Scenario 4 - Open both side panels, no air con
GPU Temp 70 - 74 degree celcius

Scenario 5 - Install back both side panels, add 2 more fans at top panels for exhaust, no air con
GPU Temp 75 - 78 degree celcius

===============================================================

From the testings result, i think i can conclude the followings:-

1. The GPU factory setting makes the card to runs at full capacity with temperature limits at 80 degree celcius. (i set 83 degree in Afterburn)

2. The casing airflow is bad

3. live with in at scenario 5, until i have time to buy a new case and reassemble again

80 Celsius is within the manufacturer temp range, although it's just noisy, warms up the room etc

Adding 2 exhaust fans may help, creating some negative pressure, which should lower temps a little bit

You could also just limit the frame rates when you play i.e. 60-100 fps is all you really need

My tiny Air 240 case is also very restrictive in terms of airflow, but I don't recall temps going up that high, prob 70-75 Celcius on ultra settings

I get you. I know others are saying 80c is fine but i myself dont feel comfortable. That's what happened with my gtx 980 ti as well. I was using a non mesh case and my gtx 980 ti was hitting 83C and lower boost clock. I spend another rm180 to get dlm21 mesh. Case has mesh front and looks good too. Was it needed? Probably not. Was it satisfying and put my mind to ease? Yes. If you got the funds, just go for it. It's your money anyway. Sell your old case on fb marketplace.

Yeah scenario 5 temps seems still alright. Those fans will help.

Yea, so far the fan noisy is in in-noticable level, as i also use ceiling fan in the room most of the time which creates noisy too

Now maintaining 75 degree celcius seems ok and comforts, compare to previous 80 degree where GPU need to undervolt occasionally to drop down the temp

If you can afford a little more , i think Cooler Master TD500 Mesh looks abit better though in my eyes. I saw Viewnet in lowyat has a white colour display unit. Maybe you can have a look at the real unit with your own eyes. For me , NR600 kinda feels " just like a squarish box ". Well, different ppl different taste la.

https://shopee.com.my/%F0%9F%94%A5HOT-ITEM%...7691.2489028381

Full mesh front , front fit 3 fans 120/140mm , top 2 fans 120/140mm . Spend too much on casing it not worth it juz like install bodykit on a car doesnt gv increase in performance

Yup, am using ceiling or standing fan also, usually no use aircon, so hardly notice any noise from PC too

TS, may i ask 1 question, what is your monitor vertical sync freq? common is 60Hz, unless you hv a latest gaming which some operate at 120Hz and so on.

if you just have 60Hz, then set the vsync setting in your game option to "on" or "enable". or you may set it on NVIDIA Control Panel to cover all programs.

i'm having this issue before, exactly same as you. after i turn on vsync, temp reduce to 60C from 83C. actually the most important is, the cooling fan not run on crazy noisy if i let it throttle at 83C...

Yea im using a 60-75hz monitor

Are you using 1660 super as well?

i have tried using the g-sync to limit the fps, and yes, gpu become less burden and lesser heat is produced (only if the gpu can works more than 60fps for certain display setting)
