I like both the 155 and 156.

The 155's design is a standout with its boxy shape but sporty impressions (especially to those who played a lot of Grand Turismo). Is it still worth getting the car now for everyday use? Is maintenance way too expensive? I can't really believe people who say that the car is THAT UNRELIABLE. Assuming a good owner who would maintain the car at the specified intervals, how reliable is the car?

I like the 156 because it has more class. With the right bodykits and stuff, it would look really nice like some GTA model. But I don't like it too low. I want ground clearance. But I hear that the selespeed is unreliable. I never trusted all those semi-auto crap from any new car anyway (eg Honda City, Lancer, Civic, 156 etc) I feel that manual is the way to go. But I also heard that manual 156 is rare and its only in 1.8l engine version. How much would one sell for? Worth getting?

Among all alfas i love the 156 the most. Cant deny that is the most sexist saloon car i ever seen. However be prepare to have lots of labor of love when owning an alfa, especially an used one.

Dont just buy an alfa coz u want something different. Make sure u have emotions on it that will last forever. Coz maintaining and running an alfa in mysia is not easy. Only true alfa lovers needed apply. sweat.gif

A155 - spare part cheaper then A156.in the current market is can find new or used parts. less problem then A156 as no selespeed. but most A156 owner love A156 & A147 is because they love the selespeed anything fun thing to play. even sometime when i drive 147 or 156 will play with it rather using the city mode. A156 & A147 still cost around 50K for the '01>, 60K-70K '04> used car. and 155&146 is around 20K-29K depend how well mantain is the owner.
i love A156 new facelifted or 156GTA. Most of the customer now a day like to install the GTA body kits, and some like the cadamuro design and also AutoDelta design~ both is very nice !!

Talking about the sport rims, well 1-2years before it really hard to get the cheap cheap and nice sporty one, but now a day you could get that !!

I like the Brera.. tongue.gif

I almost bought the 155 but settled for a 146 Ti. I can say that the 155 drives like a charm. It handles beautifully on the road. Didnt get to try out the 156 because it was out of my budget anyway.

155 has two variations, one is Wide Body. The 8V version comes with Timing Chain instead of Timing Belts so it lasts much longer. Reliability of the car depends on condition of the car (basically applies to all used cars). Alfa parts aren't as cheap as your normal local, korean and jap cars though but you can source for recond parts.

Manual 156s are rare and I really doubt you'd be able to find one that's in good condition (without being in a serious accident before)

I think you should just head to www.italiaauto.net and read up there.

my family had a 156 2.5 V6 with a full auto gearbox, no selespeed, but the gearstick looks like a manual with PRND gears tongue.gif

tried playing with it but it was very awkward playing with the H-gate without a clutch, so i got really bored of it.

it was a really great car though. Alfa's engine note is enough to make anyone fall in love with it, it's just so sweet and distinct... ahh.. the memories.. wub.gif

none, it was one of the most reliable cars our family had, according to my dad. smile.gif

just that it was 6 years old, and that it was time for a change.

I love the 147 for its boxer engine and 156 for its looks.

for how much did ur family let the 156 go?

Currently its around 60+ for a 2nd hand yr 2000+. Issit worth buying especially considering the parts? How much is the oil filter, air filter and things tht needs to be changed every service?

ours was bought in the year 1999, but December. let go in 2006.. I think just above RM70k. let it go to an Alfa enthusiast who really appreciates the car. we've had ridiculous offers of even RM50k from those 'normal' people who don't know what an Alfa is like.. shakehead.gif

sorry, can't help you on the servicing, I was too young back then to bother tongue.gif

Let's see...

Servicing?
Oil change every 5000-6000km cost about RM200 (or less) for 4 1/4 litres of ELF semi-synth and oil filter. Mine's a 2.0
other than that, just make sure you check your oil, water levels, tyre pressures.. etc. basic car check ups.. hehe.. it's a car anyway.

Pricing?
146 price varies 1.7 Boxer about RM10k-15k and 1.6-2.0 TwinSparks for about RM20K-RM35K

Reliability?
Ride her hard and you get less problems. That's what most if not all Alfistis say and I tend to agree with that. Never really had any problems when I rode her hard but problems appear when I drive like a granny. Dunno why... so good to redline her when you can. Make sure you have the proper tyres and driving skills when speeding. Stay alert. hehe

Parts?
Not cheap. Damn expensive if you get original new parts. Much cheaper (1/3 of new part price) if you get recond parts.

So far, I've spent... (inclusive of labor charges)
- RM850 for Idling Valve, Power Window rewiring and oil change
- RM550 for motor starter (rosak.. change to recond one. new one quoted at RM1500)
- RM150 for aircon repairs (some hose broke and had to replace that and replace gas again... and again)
- RM120 for 1 disc brake fluid hose near my tyres + brake fluid

Need/Want to replace
- Windscreen cracked kena batu. sad.gif
- New pedals (gas, clutch, brake pedals) that has much better grip
- K&N air filter
- Koni suspensions
- New paint job
- New better window tinting
- better tyres

Bear in mind, I'm driving an 11 year old car which can do 220km/h without any problems (so far, never had the chance to push it further). Highway cruising at a comfortable 140km/h (12 o'clock on the meter). Timing belt life is a bit short at 40k km and they aren't cheap. You're looking at RM1k for timing belt changes compared to a Skyline's that probably cost RM300 (plus labor) for 100k km life. Anyway, my car comes with sporty seats, sunroof, airbags, 4 disc brakes as standard and it cost less than RM30k.

Fuel Consumption = RM110 full tank
Mix driving (highway + driving like granny) = 500+km
Driving like granny = 400+km
Never tried all highway driving yet

My complains...
- No cup holder (hehe)
- Glove compartment though cool is quite small
- Built-in Ashtrays around the car encourages people to dump stuff in them and smoke in my car
- Manual only (driving manual in KL during jam = very tired)
- Lousy visibility of rear (bad for reverse parking)
- A bit noisy (but dem nice growl) and folks everyone wanna lumba with me on highway (usually just leave em behind as I speed up)
- Gets a bit 'hot' in the car if I speed above 160-180km/h (maybe the heat shield problem)

I never bothered with the 1.6 after test driving the 1.8 155 and the 2.0 146. Picked the 146 because of the design and driving position and for its compactness.

wah, so comprehensive ar haha. thx bro.

the maintenance is ... epensive! but for ur case, u got an 11yr old car below 30k and still drives so good, i think its a good bargain. But i'm not sure the same case if i were to get a 60k 2nd hand 156 tho. any specific known problem which comes with 156? i.e. rubber seals n etc probs?

The condo i live at, there's 1 black 156 with diffuser at the back. Very cool. Summore after watching some ah beng turbo"ed" wira kena smoked by 156 on the genting road on youtube, it appeals even more to me.

As usual la, most of the car come into my workshop 5 out of 10 is alfa 156 or 147, most problem they facing is oil cell leak, selespeed problem, abs signal light up. most people come is because oil leaking. but others~ not very sure as i am not the machanic !

hey 60K to get year 1999 alfa 156 is too high, as last month we just sold one alfa for 55K. please check properly and also the warranty, unless the car including cadamuro design or auto delta full set body kits and also super sprint exhaust system, ECU tuning ! ha~ that cost 80K++ already la~ haha as all original part is from italy or UK hehe.
dreaming.

those 2nd alfa 156 got many many problem, after sold, they will come back many many times. just after a few driving and minor fixing will be ok. it mihgt because long time didn't drive the car, and will occur so many problem! just for your refer our basic package servicing is 300bucks using SELENIA oil. about the timing belt service check this out

Alfa 146 1.6 Boxer = RM 499.00
Alfa 146 1.7 Boxer = RM 610.00
Alfa 146 1.6/1.8 Twin Spark 16V = RM 810.00
Alfa 147 1.6 Twin Spark 16V = RM 880.00
Alfa 146/155/147/156 2.0 Twin Spark 16V = RM 999.00
Alfa 156 2.5 V6/ Alfa166 3.0 = RM 2800.00

copy and paste from my company website. just to let you refer. just to tell you, we can easily find used parts easily unless this whole klang valley short of the particular things. hehe~

the price is depend on your car abviously how many belt you need to change somemore got compressor bearing or stabilizing belt and so on~ 999bucks in including the labour, honestly tell you labour is charge a lot but reasonable la~ as manything need to do~ if i have alfa 156 or a 147 then i am sure need that.

just to share with you something last week there is a customer went to install a new sound system andfinally the guy who install the sound system know nothing about the italian car, when they finish install and something goes wrong with the wire and cannot check out the problem so end-up with call our mechnic to check, and more troublesome thing is they request to drive back the car and to car inspection, i believe the shop this time doing a rugi business ~ hahaha~ !!

Nel, wht are the choices of an 156 2.0 transmission? r all of them comes only in Selespeed locally? On average, how much does the new 2nd hand owner spend on fixing?

U mentioned abt the oil cell leak, selespeed problem, abs signal light up. how much do u reckon on fixing the particular probs? and ... how long can the timing belt last?

Any 2nd 156 in ur showroom now? if yes how much, how's the condition and wht yr?

Hi about your question, that is too wide to answer here, many places will occur oil leaking its depend some only cost 10bucks, some place like accerator will cost you 1000bucks, but thats depend on the car condition. if the car been overhaul~ that will be the best.

About the selespeed problem sometime its because the wire problem as its old enough. and there do have some problem about the 1st batch selespeed but with very careful maintain will not give you headache and few K expenses. if you like to know more particular problem please go to italiaauto, there is much more expert there! i am not qualify to give you these information here la~ hehe~

My showrrom now got 145,146,147,164 and Alfa GTV. hehe no 156 as its kind of hot selling car still. one month gone 2 units and it is not very nice color, silver but still many ppl love them !! hoho! you wanna try up 147 ?? a bit light than 156 but give you same performance woh !!

*
err ... how much is tht 147? i dun think i can afford tht ... if below 65k ... still ok. Btw wht yr? how is the condition? how many owners b4 this?

yea... because of their bad resale value (like most if not all Conti cars), old Alfas and other Conti cars are pretty much affordable. Not very often you'd find an eleven year old car that can go over 200 km/h, eh? Think if I push or had a clear(er) highway, I might hit 240km/h. Meter is maxed at 260km/h. Then again... our road conditions are so bad I rarely do above 140 on the highways.

Yeah, the road is really sorry la! but last time i did try to drive to out station driving the 2003year Alfa156, walau speeding inside no rasa, until 180Kmh still smooth and no noise come out from engine, and it still very stable in front and it not floating. i also manage to do emergency stop like 160km stop because of the big big 22tyres truck stop and oooh thanks for the car i am still alive.! ha~ used to drive until 190 and the road is damn no good to increase more la~if Alfa is selling at Honda Accord & Toyota Camry range of price, i am sure Alfa will become a best selling car in Malaysia !! haha !

If the price was at Honda Accord or Toyota, best selling car in Malaysia...? I doubt it... hahaha... not everyone's into Conti car driving experience.

I recently sat in a new Honda Civic. It felt comfortable and all. Siting position was quite high (maybe I'm used to my Alfa's lower sitting position) but the engine was a bit quiet which was a bit too quiet for me... maybe it's just not for me, not really used to driving a vehicle (or riding one) that has no engine roar... even when I drove a Vitara. Stopping at the traffic lights and not hearing a single sound, sometimes I wonder if the engine went dead or something... so quiet engines aren't my cuppa tea. sad.gif Maybe when I grow older lah.. then maybe more into quiet engine cars... hehe

there is alfa romeo club here in lyn?shocking.gif i never knew. well owner of an alfa romeo 146 2l twin spark here. hope we can see more owners reporting in

well i just fell in love with the alfa when i hear the engine roar pass 3k rpm. the sweet purr of the engine at high rpm is really something that makes it truly an alfa. you should really hear the engine pass 3k rpm. you will surely fell in love with it,

oh and the 'newly' launched alfa 159 is sexy. too bad the engine does not have the sweet purr as the twin spark engine

That is untrue... Milano is the replacement for the 147... Check out the CarScoop's spyshots... looks sexy with MiTo's cues... It even has the hidden door handles like the 147...

i do love alfa's but being italian, my grandpa said no to it! lol he had a fiat 600, and was a skeptic to the brand. no european cars till my dad bought a c200. now another c200k.

always would consider the alfa romeo duetto spider, driven by dustin hoffman in the graduate. look at those carbies roar

The 155 is a very nice car! To me, that car looks very muscular and rugged! It is a cool car!

If you want the 155, I would suggest taking your time and look for one with the TS engines. They are simply awesome for its class and sounds beautiful. Many would agree that other car manufacturers wont be able to make the 4-cylinder engines sound so good. wink.gif

I have seen a few 155s around with the 2.5 V6 engines! Those are even more awesome! With a manual tranny, it would only be lovely! tongue.gif

Seriously, after owning my current 156...I am addicted to it and am thinking of getting another Alfa! Was thinking of the 145 Boxer (love its looks, 2-doors and the boxer sound). I would also consider a 145 Cloverleaf with the TS engine, if I can find one. Only thing, not many in the market and have not found one for sale yet. They are like so rare in the market!

Anyway, ur current ride is nice. You had also done much to it and made it look great! So, take ur time in finding another ride! wink.gif

However, be on the look out as once in awhile a great ride comes out for sale and you just have to make that decision and get that car quick! If you know what I mean! smile.gif

Hi Jeff, you must be a real Alfista! rclxms.gif

You are right in saying that the sound that comes out from driving our bellas are like music. I also do not turn on my radio when driving my Alfa!

They are definitely more than just being fun to drive...I totally agree with you! thumbup.gif

Um, sorry if i missed it out earlier...but, which Alfa do you drive? Boxer, TS or V6? They all sound awesome! Lol!

Ps. Before someone asks what is the difference between Alfista and Alfisti...Alfista is for an individual Alfa enthusiast (singular) whereas Alfisti refers to a group of them (plural). wink.gif

there is a 145 clover on sale in mudah....black....in quite good condition....I love alfas....too bad my dad doesn't share the same passion...

Thanks bro for pointing that to me! Will check that car out and see how it is! Looks nice, but i noticed something which brings a question to me. Anyway, i would just call the owner and find out more. smile.gif

My dad also questioned about why I bought the Alfa. He used to own a Spider and GTV6. He had much problems with those cars and nvr owned an Alfa after that. I remembered I was very young at that time, but ady loved the sounds it made!

However, my dad sold those cars and nvr went back to Alfa. He is a BMW loyalist now! Haha! Been owning BMWs eversince and I used to drive his E36 (328) and E34 (525).

They were great and nice cars to drive! The 328 was fast and I would say faster than my 156. More fun in corners as well due to RWD. However, the Alfa has something which excites me more. It is like it has more soul and spirit. Owning and driving the Alfa is more special to me! biggrin.gif

After my dad sat in my car and tried it...he nodded and said not bad! Good choice, but still not a car for me...I go BMW! Lol! These Alfas are for young blood such as you! Hmmm....die la to all BMW drivers....he said BMW more for uncles! Lol! Young ppl like me can take Alfa. doh.gif I should intro him to the many uncles I know who drive Alfas.

Ps. When I came back and was a fresh graduate, I wanted to buy the 156. My mum did not allow and said I was a fresh grad la, bla bla bla...wont allow me to buy such a car. High maintainance and all! Thus, I ended up buying a Waja Campro! It is still a nice car and no regrets! Still owning it! biggrin.gif

However, after I made my own money and can afford my own car...I just buy the 156 and whatever car I want la! No need to ask mummy or daddy! It is your money ma!

So, no need to worry about your dad not sharing the same passion! wink.gif

Not even sure how many LYN members drive a bella- trust me there are.
Have met them before, when they buy items from me. Haha.

he told me the cars break down very often and go into the workshops very often- this i can confirm..

maintenance more expensive than owning a evo
*
Haha! You sell some Alfa parts, so u should know how much more they cost than other cars. You tell us la! Hehe!

Anyway, to say that Alfas break down very often and go into workshops very often is wrong to say. Actually, I used to have many problems with my Selespeed and it gave me numerous issues.

It really masuk the workshop every week at one time, just to rectify my Selespeed problem. I spent much money and changed many things, yet the same issues creeped out.

Eventually, I was told that I may be going to the wrong mech who may not specialise with the Selespeed. Other Alfas and things, they may be good...but, Selespeed...no!

So, I found another mech which I am going to. Also, most of the other Alfa owners that I know who come here, have no issues with their car. Thus, it is really a matter of who you go to for maintainance of your car. Also, with Alfas...you can't skimp on the parts. You must go original. Many owners want to save and get used parts and non-original. Surely, they wont last and break down quickly. Then, they say Alfas are not reliable! doh.gif

Ps. With me saying the above, I have to admit that parts for the Selespeed are EXPENSIVE!!! Hehe! Besides that, the normal servicing and maintainance of the car is affordable and reasonable!

Yes! The Selespeed would give quite a few issues! However, if you have the right mechanic and they know how to maintain it well...it should not give you much problems.

I drive the Selespeed because I love the F1 style and experience that it gives me. You can throttle blip by pushing on the button or pulling down the gear lever. The response is quick and swift. Double throttle blipping (dropping two gears) is a easy job with the Selespeed and the sounds it makes when you do this is so nice! Hehe!

I was thinking of the manual initially, but decided against it because the Selespeed is so so fun! biggrin.gif

Regarding the 159, it is a gorgeous looking car and rare over here. I had a testdrive, but I think I still like and prefer my 156! So, did not change yet! However, I am simply impressed by the way the 159 handles! thumbup.gif

IA forums, just joined there, really cool forum, very passionate bunch of people.

why grey importer never bring alfas in? 06-07 alfa 159 seems like a cheap buy to me. also the earlier alfa GT. last time in mudah rm120k only. after 5 years lose more than 50% in depreciation.

had tested alfa 156 2.0 '00 before, nice interior it has.. red. nice engine sound too

guys, need some of your opinions.

I'm on the verge of getting a used Alfa 147. It's a 2004 version (non-facelift) but with all the trimmings , ie: GPS, red leather seats, BOSE system etc. Anything that could have been bought for that model is in that car drool.gif

HOWEVER ,

I'm having doubts as to get the 2004 version, or a more recent one. Read almost every review I could find and it seems the new-er versions have improved suspension.

Is this suspension a big deal ? or is it something I won't notice until someone points it out ? tongue.gif

Also, 1st time buyer here ... any tips on what I should look out for ?

Alfa Romeo 147 selespeed ,major problem is to take real care your selespeed oil, make sure u check every 3-5km, if u find leaking all the time, it's time to repair, there's are tear & wear, can be around rm500 - 1,500 for parts!
Need change timing belt every 45km! If lower, the lower arms will not last long, lower arm a bit costly, around rm600-700 a pc, others tear & wear!
Can log in to Aroc Malaysia facebbok group! Check out more detail!

in malaysia, where a persons status and class is usually determined by the type and brand of car they drive,
it is no surprise people would prefer to go for the 2 main german cars.

Also don't be surprised that the people who buy those 2 cars, only do 2 things in the car:
1) start engine
2) go.

they only need to know 1 thing, the brand that they are driving.

okay sorry, actually theres hidden meaning there.
What I mean is that, people only buy a car to get from A to B.
And to get from A to B in THOSE brand means you will look superior to others.

And many people that do ride in those cars don't know half of the functions of the car.

hence, they dont appreciate that Alfa Romeos are more than just cars. That Alfa Romeos are mechanical souls .
They see that its not a popular choice among the successful people, so they turn away and get the boring black 3 series, or that silver brown C class. Why is it not popular, because these weird cars from Italy have a history of having "problems".

Imagine you are the director of your company and you still make the decision to go out and buy a problematic brand.
If investors see you in that they might lose confidence in your company.

Its all about image, especially in malaysia.

i like Alfa Romeo design

but if the car can't do the job, it's not a good car. y buy a car that will give problems?

honestly is the reliability of Alfas that bad that people are refraining from buying the new models?

If I am not mistaken, labour charges and timing belt comes up to about RM1500.
If you have not join any Alfa Romeo group in Malaysia. I suggest you head up to,
