IS is only to compensate your handshake while holding the camera upto 4 stops

However, I disagree because it's the photo that matters. As long if the outcome of the photo is good then we should be happy. IS may possibly help save the best shot in your lifetime. In my opinion, just get a cam with IS. |

I own the S5Is. But I think better ISO quality much better then IS. Eg, Fuji F31fd

QUOTE(mynewuser @ Aug 19 2007, 08:58 AM) I would have preferred both. heheI would have to admit that higher ISO allows you to stop down further in a not-so-bright condition. But if you want to shoot macro or insect, or you intend to do a heavy crop, IS will be better because no matter how good the sensor is (even under ISO80 for S3IS), heavy crop under high ISO will be noisy. |

QUOTE(kelvinyam @ Aug 19 2007, 11:03 AM) Without IS? Use tripod loh. 1/10s no need IS la, sap sap water.1/10 sec. Hand held. Couldn't have done it without IS. i can easily get a sharp pic with lumix tz1 OIS at 1 sec, the longest is 1.5sec handhold, 1.5sec is abit hard tho. ![]() without IS fuji f20 the slowest SS is 1/4s handhold: ![]() both pic 100% crop, check the exif. fuji without IS i can easily get sharp pics by using the burst mode, hold the camera steadily take 3 pics in a row, at least 1 or 2 is sharp. |

The best pic with IS is not better than the best pic without IS.How great photographers of the past do without IS? When shutter speed is fast enough, then the limiting factors are the lenses, imaging sensor, and other techniques. But, without IS, it is very difficult get even acceptable (ie. free from handshake blur) pics at slow shutter speeds handheld. So, IS doesn't make your best picts.. betterer. But you get more good and acceptable pics. Something like lowering the passing grade of a test so that more students pass that exam... Try taking macro without IS and you'll know how difficult it is. As well as when in high zoom.

At any rate, GreyPJ has just shown he is an exceptional person when it comes to hand-holding steadiness. Even the 1/10s shot at 438mm focal length shot is unbelievably steady!!
But, again, unless you believe you are the exception, IS will seriously help you. More so after a long photography session holding heavy camera gear or if you are the type that likes to drink coffee. Don't even mention Parkinson's disease... |

Urrgh.. After looking at GreyPJ's photo, I start to wonder if I have minor Parkinson disease. IS is very very important to me, especially when I'm taking pictures indoor.

no no guys, i think everyone can do it, my secret is using the burst mode, (hold the camera steadily, press the shuttur button down and take a series of pics consecutively) for that max zoom pic i took 5 pics in a row and there are 2 sharp pics, 3 blurry.
had i taken just 1 shot it would be 99.9% blurry, IS wont help. |

ISO=film speed=how fast the film catches light.
I was in a dilemma before IS or ISO. Fate has it if nobody wants to buy my f40fd by 23rd I'll stick to ISO then, ha. |

QUOTE(NasiLemakMan @ Aug 19 2007, 09:42 PM) ISO=film speed=how fast the film catches light. There's also another factor: image quality at a given ISO setting.I was in a dilemma before IS or ISO. Fate has it if nobody wants to buy my f40fd by 23rd I'll stick to ISO then, ha. Sure your camera can do ISO1600 or whatever, but are those pictures pleasant to look at? ISO and IS complement each other. Better to have them both. In a perfect world, I'd go for higher ISO but with very low noise and no other side-effects of anti-noise algorithms (eg. softness) but until that day arrives, IS is already here to help you to better use those low to medium level ISO settings. |

QUOTE(NasiLemakMan @ Aug 19 2007, 10:25 PM) What about a film camera that have IS? For film cameras, the IS is in the lens... All this while whenever I heard IS = digital camera. Is there such a thing? Obviously you cannot move the film - not like today's CCD-shift anti-shake mechanisms. To support their film customer base, and also to make good profit margins, Canon and Nikon keeps their IS or VR in the lenses for their D/SLRs. |
