The vulnerability resides in two misconfigured registry keys for the RPC Endpoint Mapper and DNSCache services that are part of all Windows installations.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcEptMapper
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache

Does it affect anything on my old Windows 7 system? I don't want to upgrade it to Windows 10. My new laptop has Win 10, and I still like to use Windows 7 once in a while.

If your Windows 7 system has passwords, personal info, save logins or similar, then get virus or hacked, then hackers can still steal your information. Reinstall won't help with that.

I still like Win7 & I do have legacy apps that only runs in that OS.

But I do highly recommend the following :-

1) Ensure Windows Updates is up-to-date.
2) Install a reputable anti-virus program.
3) Ensure Internet browsers (eg. Chrome, Firefox) is updated.
4) Do use the "Save Password" features in any browsers.
5) Limit the internet browsing time, stay OFFLINE unless really required.
6) DO NOT use it to perform any banking transactions or access social media platform unless really necessary.

Have fun.....

Get Windows 10, seriously, and w11 is almost there already, you're gonna left behind.

use your Win7 in virtual machine, don't waste your time on the old os, nowadays trend is ransomware and coinminer, not virus, virus is so outdated now.

My main machine is on Win 11 Dev. Only my father is reluctant to upgrade beyond Win 7, maybe because he was familiar, and the specs is also the bare minimum to support Win 10 (Intel 2nd gen?)

There's nothing too important on it, just basic browsing. So, if any ransonware kena, I'll just wipe and reinstall.

Nothing wrong with win7, still good, those people that want to always upgrade to latest windows are too paranoid, or like to surf gambling/porn sites.

I am still using xp and win 7, never bother to upgrade to win10. No point, its like handphone, everything need to upgrade to new version. For me its always the default version when bought new, never upgrade.

Just tell your father to use firefox for normal browsing, while for banking or any other logins, use chrome, after logout just clear cache in more tools -> clear browsing data

for increased security, try to use encrypted DNS, aka DNS-over-HTTPS, or one of the DNS provider https://kb.adguard.com/en/general/dns-providers
can be used on browser, PC or router level.
newer browser such as Forefox and Chrome always has the latest update, so Win7 is still good to go, but they dropped support on XP.

Also there's always a linux flavor, if people using PC just browsing, then OS does not really matters, a lot of distro made the UX user friendly and even more customizable than Windows counterpart.

Win 10 is way better than 7. Can't believe why people still stuck with Win 7 when Win 10 upgrade is free. Win 11 another story though, still many issues to iron out. Win 10 was way better than Win 11 and has less issues when it was launched as it's pretty much an enhanced stable Win 8.
