Hi all ! smile.gif

Am thinking to replace the ceiling of my 2-storey Terrace home . It's the old type of ceiling (i believe it is asbestos?) , and I am just worried that my family is slowly breathing in the asbestos .. As it's quite old, some parts are damaged .

This type of ceiling:

Sometimes the "Musang/Civet" will somehow find it's way into my attic and start running around on the attic causing a racket , and light dust can be seen falling down from ceiling .. rclxub.gif laugh.gif Guess I'm just mainly concerned about my family's health.

So far I only know 2 options :

1) Replace the ceiling with the same materials, new and undamaged . .. But read that it could be a serious health hazard if renovators need to remove, as the asbestos fibres will fly around.

2) Saw some recommendation to just paint the current old asbestos ceiling, and install Plaster Ceiling . (I also read that plaster ceiling, if damaged, is also a health hazard? I know it's debatable, as there's conflicting info about Plaster Ceiling) ...

3) _______________ (What other options do I have? Cement ceiling?)

Nowadays the trend is to use the plaster ceiling. I am currently doing the same thing at my house. Replacing old asbestos ceiling with plaster ceiling. Plaster ceiling is not dangerous. Same material as the drywall partition.

Also as an addendum to this, you could use plywood sheets and stick a nicer veneer to it.

However first you might want to address the issue of why civet cats are able to enter and do watch out if those could enter so too could bats and other vector marsupials.

Hey, I got the same concern with you as well. I recently bought a 2nd-hand house near to my parents house. We have been living there nearly 30 years and now only I realize the ceiling is asbestos ceiling. Can I know what option you took in the end? My parents claimed all the houses built in that era uses this kind of ceiling. And if it is hazardous, many people will kene already. Hopefully that's only I am too worried about this...

Any material that is factory (man) made is 'dangerous'.

Asbestos is dangerous but it depends on when the house was actually made. Ours was in the 80s already using the 1mx1m sized square plaster boards (not asbestos)

Just curious did you get professional to check & confirm if this type of old ceiling contains asbestos? I'm curious too, this is the same as the ceiling I have!

Is the ceiling exactly same as TS posted? Have you got it tested? I wanna it replaced but keep holding back due to the risk of removing but the house is old and some of the ceilings are not in good condition but I worry replacing the whole ceiling is worse if I only get normal reno contractors...
