Hi all, wanna ask some questions regarding tyres, as this is my first car and I have never changed any tyres before.

I'm using Axia 2016 AV, till now still using stock tyres.

1- Normally how long do we need to change car tyres in Malaysia? Just normal driving on road, not using it rough etc.

2- If we change, do we change all 4 one shot? or 2 by 2?

3- If let's say 1 tyre is faulty, do we change the 2 tyres at front/back together? or just that one tyre will do?

4- How much will be the price of per tyre for my car?
5- If I buy new tyres from shop, will I get some discount as they will take my old tyres? How much will it usually be per old tyre?

6- What are the recommended brands of tyre for my car?

7- For tyre brands, e.g Michelin, Continental etc., will there be like many series for a car? Or just tell the shop I'm using Axia and prefer which brand then they know which to give?
Like PC DELL laptop there will be Inspiron, G series, XPS etc.

8- How to know which brand is good which is bad? like laptop I can pick easily based on the features, but is there anything special about tyre brands that differentiate them? Anything I should look out for?

9- What are some highly reputable / trusted company that sells tyre in Cheras / Puchong area? Those that will not simply give you marked up prices etc.

10- Anything I should look out for when buying tyres? So that I won't be scammed by tyres seller.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply this, I just want to clear some confusion before getting them, appreciate it!

Hi all, wanna ask some questions regarding tyres, as this is my first car and I have never changed any tyres before.

1- Normally how long do we need to change car tyres in Malaysia? Just normal driving on road, not using it rough etc.
Actually by safety standard is 3 years once regardless your tyre already botak or not. But if money no issue then when tyre tread reach warning line, then is good to change.

2- If we change, do we change all 4 one shot? or 2 by 2?
normally front 2 tyres easier to get botak. So normally change 2 by 2. Unless u maintain your tyre by rotating every 15k or 20k km. Then by this method, at the near end of tyre life span, u need to change 4 all together

3- If let's say 1 tyre is faulty, do we change the 2 tyres at front/back together? or just that one tyre will do?
again, depend on your other side of tyre condition. Best is change both if money no issue or u have to change both anyway becoz the other side oso reach botak edy. Or elsr u can change the one faulty provided the other side of tyre still in good condition.

4- How much will be the price of per tyre for my car?
no idea. Less than rm100 i guess, for 13" & china brand??

5- If I buy new tyres from shop, will I get some discount as they will take my old tyres? How much will it usually be per old tyre?
again, no idea. Need to depend on tyre condition. Even it is still very new, tyre shop will offer u very cheap price compare to when u buy it new becoz when they sell it out to othet client under used tyre.

6- What are the recommended brands of tyre for my car?
i would go for Michelin but not sure got youre tyre size or not. Or else, Conti pun ok lar.

7- For tyre brands, e.g Michelin, Continental etc., will there be like many series for a car? Or just tell the shop I'm using Axia and prefer which brand then they know which to give?
Like PC DELL laptop there will be Inspiron, G series, XPS etc.
yes, every tyre manufacturer has alot of series but if u dun wan headache n easy going, just tell them your car model, tyre size, what brand u want n they will propose to u. Or, u can tell them directly your budget n brand u prefer.

8- How to know which brand is good which is bad? like laptop I can pick easily based on the features, but is there anything special about tyre brands that differentiate them? Anything I should look out for?
for your tyre size, my guess is nothing much to consider beside pricing. But of coz, unless u r aggresive or particular in some point driver, then u may need to consider the tyre tread pattern, hardness, etc, etc.

9- What are some highly reputable / trusted company that sells tyre in Cheras / Puchong area? Those that will not simply give you marked up prices etc.
no comment as im not from these area. U need to survey n ask around your fren or relative perhaps.

10- Anything I should look out for when buying tyres? So that I won't be scammed by tyres seller.
can elaborate on "scammed" defination? laugh.gif im not sure what to scam on tyre though whistling.gif correct me if im wrong

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply this, I just want to clear some confusion before getting them, appreciate it!

1. i not sure how you get your driving licence but i tot this was taught during class at driving academy...
2. depend on tayar condition , usually front 2 1st since there more heavy IF you dont plan to swap with rear tayar.
3. depend how much you care about that. no care one just change one, very particular one will change both, usually depend tayar condition .
4. for axia is fuxking cheap. easiest way is just search in FB and a bunch will pop up.
5. you mean used and totally beat up tayar ? dun think so. wait other input on this.
6. very VERY depend how much your budget is , and how much you care about that.
7. again, depend your budget, and how much you care about what you getting.
8. YES. OF COURSE there is reason why one brand so cheap but another brand tayar so expensive.
the material used, the teah goes inside it and the research that they did to make one tayar is another reason why pricing so different.
not gonna spoon feed you on this but i will give you the BIGGEST different i notice is steel belted or nylon, or is it a radial vs bias ply tire.
so go do some research , google, or wait other input on this, then decide which one you will go for.
9. search in FB is better. you can compare those that shop that post up their price list. or ask in those Axia fb group (or maybe search in lowyat axia group).
10. USE COMMON SENSE. if still kena con then ban that shop, go other shop.

Depends on tire model, some last longer, some wear out faster. For your small tires size on small light car, typically would last pretty long, at least 60k km I believe  not necessarily depending on time duration. Because tires can be used for up to 5-6  years.

2- If we change, do we change all 4 one shot? or 2 by 2?
Ideally all 4 but you can only do that if you even out the wear by rotating every 15 or 20k km. If you never rotate then front will wear out much faster hence you need to change 2 first.

3- If let's say 1 tyre is faulty, do we change the 2 tyres at front/back together? or just that one tyre will do?
If the other tires are still very thick then can just buy 1 of the exact same tire. Otherwise change 2.

4- How much will be the price of per tyre for my car?
Depends on brand and model. Some more expensive like Michelin maybe can be over rm150/pc. Some cheaper between 110-150. Don't buy too cheap tires like those unknown China/Indo/Vietnam/Thai brands. Buy reputable brands.

5- If I buy new tyres from shop, will I get some discount as they will take my old tyres? How much will it usually be per old tyre?
Practically worthless if you have worn them down to below 50%

6- What are the recommended brands of tyre for my car?
Try Dunlop Sport J5, Goodyear Duraplus, or Yokohama Blue Earth

7- For tyre brands, e.g Michelin, Continental etc., will there be like many series for a car? Or just tell the shop I'm using Axia and prefer which brand then they know which to give?
Like PC DELL laptop there will be Inspiron, G series, XPS etc.
Yes got many models. Best if you know what you want, don't simply just follow the shop because shops simply sell what they carry or which one give them the big profits. Unknowlegable customers are perfect easy meat for them!

8- How to know which brand is good which is bad? like laptop I can pick easily based on the features, but is there anything special about tyre brands that differentiate them? Anything I should look out for?
Michelin, Continental, Pirelli  are typically the most expensive but not necessarily the best choice for certain model ranges or sizes. Goodyear, Dunlop, Bridgestone  Hankook, Yokohama are also good first tier brands. Other brands are lower than those. But note again, not all tires made by those top brands are necessarily worth it, some like Michelin XM2 or Continental CC6 are actually not really worth it for their relatively higher prices.

9- What are some highly reputable / trusted company that sells tyre in Cheras / Puchong area? Those that will not simply give you marked up prices etc.
no idea, better browse in Mudah or Facebook

10- Anything I should look out for when buying tyres? So that I won't be scammed by tyres seller.
Just make sure the price is all inclusive of installation,  balancing, air valves, alignments. Some may try to charge extra for each of those. And like I said above, try to research and know exactlywhat you want, don'tjust follow the shops suggestions.

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply this, I just want to clear some confusion before getting them, appreciate it!

Here is my take ,

QUOTE(wong93 @ Aug 28 2020, 11:01 PM)
Hi all, wanna ask some questions regarding tyres, as this is my first car and I have never changed any tyres before.

I'm using Axia 2016 AV, till now still using stock tyres.

1- Normally how long do we need to change car tyres in Malaysia? Just normal driving on road, not using it rough etc.

Other than side wall or manufacturing defects (seldom happens) , a normally used tyre may be replaced when it is worn thinner touching the Tyre Wear Indicator  within the tyre grooves/longkang .

The depth of Tyre Wear Indicator is exactly 1.6 mm depth above groove bottom .

If tyre is not worn out and is still higher than TWI level , then all tyres exceeding 10 years (after tyre manufacturing date ) must be replaced even if it looks ok or normal .

The above statement comes from tyre  manufacturers , around the globe .

2- If we change, do we change all 4 one shot? or 2 by 2?

Unlike others , I don't buy the concept of rotating tyres at every 10,000/15,000 whatever km . Besides I do not redo any tyre balancing or wheel alignment in between new front tyre replacement date .

Hence 2 out of 4 of my tyres will get worn out first (like touching Tyre Wear Indicator markings) , usually from front axle first , then to rear axle tyre much later .

In this scenario , I change worn out tyres in sets of two . Not four . That is 2 by 2 .

3- If let's say 1 tyre is faulty, do we change the 2 tyres at front/back together? or just that one tyre will do?

Then makes use of the spare tyre .

If no spare tyre is provided by factory , get 1 new tyre if the other not faulty one is having good thread depth .

Should you feel it's thread depth is quite shallow already , say less than 3 mm depth then you can just change out in sets of  2 tyres , keeping worn 3 mm tyre as spare tyre .

4- How much will be the price of per tyre for my car?

Others have commented as I don't quite follow pricings .

5- If I buy new tyres from shop, will I get some discount as they will take my old tyres? How much will it usually be per old tyre?

Local practice here usually no value in giving discount to customer . The shop will not mind if owner wants to take back changed out tyres .

6- What are the recommended brands of tyre for my car?

Others have commented .

7- For tyre brands, e.g Michelin, Continental etc., will there be like many series for a car? Or just tell the shop I'm using Axia and prefer which brand then they know which to give?
Like PC DELL laptop there will be Inspiron, G series, XPS etc.

Yes . Tell the shop your prefered brand but the stock in the shop may be different .

Tyre size is known to the shop . It is best you know the size too .

8- How to know which brand is good which is bad? like laptop I can pick easily based on the features, but is there anything special about tyre brands that differentiate them? Anything I should look out for?

I had used continental and goodyear before .

Nowaday I prefer Michelin XM2 (now XM2+)  , a bit pricy but value for money for over 100,000 km tyre life .

9- What are some highly reputable / trusted company that sells tyre in Cheras / Puchong area? Those that will not simply give you marked up prices etc.

10- Anything I should look out for when buying tyres? So that I won't be scammed by tyres seller.

All newly bought tyres must do tyre balancing before installation .

If buy 2 new tyres only at a time , always put new tyres at the rear axle .

Move used tyres to the front axle (In this case , I don't normally do wheel alignment if previous front tyre wear pattern is not uneven or looks funny ) .

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply this, I just want to clear some confusion before getting them, appreciate it!

Very good information. Another very important thing to check when purchasing new tyres is to check the manufacturing date on the new tyre. Some shops might try to sell older stock tyre without a discount to those who are not familiar about cars/tyres.

Ah ya good point, forgot about that. If they give like 1 year old or even older just ask for big discounts. Actually that's the best deal which I normally look for.
