Lower shutter speed or increase ISO, preferrable 400 or more for better exposure. Good Morning Grand Master Shinchan

Just set to 24mm and shoot. no need to zoom. lol... with M mode, f4, iso 400 around 1/30 would be enough.

All of the pictures above i used 400d + kit lens, only the last one i used 90mm-200mm tele lense coz i was toying with it. LOL. So it's blur because i din stand far enough. All pics i used ISO 1600. Haihz... the pictures look noisy to me.. and they doesnt look like taken from a dslr, look more like a normal digital cam. Really was dissappointed.
This was my first attempt on event photographing, so very paiseh also to ask the girls to shoot them, but i forced myself in the end. haha... but was very nervous... So all sifus.. i need advices on how to improve in event photographing. what settings to use... i myself prefer a warm picture.. =) |

i dunno.. i also feel the ballroom is bright... but i use ISO 1600 my shutter speed is around 1/25 ~ 1/40.(f 5.6 , exposure is balance , 18 ~ 21mm) So imagine... ISO400. >< shutter speed will be a lot lower..

While the 1st pic & the last one is okay, the majority of them needs to go lower, and always remember to take from the head until the stomach at max.

I like the shot of the Maxis girl..
Things I've found important in photographing people during indoor areas are: 1. Expression 2. Background (busy or not) 3. Lighting (flash) 4. Zoom (to capture candid stuff) |

No 2 will look great for those taking portrait pics in the studio, but 1st, reduce the warmness of the color. As many says, pic no 3 seems noisy.

Trial and error is always a good way to learn but you must always ask yourself "What do I want? What kinda image am I trying to create and how I wanna achieve it?" If you take away everything, a camera is nothing but a stupid box, sensitive to light and always waiting for your instruction. Seems to me that HUMANS are the one becoming a stupid box, always asking questions and awaiting to be spoonfed, haha! Do experiment with various functions of your camera and see the results, starting with Aperture Priority, play with various shutter speed and see what it does to your images and so forth. Dun jump into conclusions so early and so easily ... getting to know your camera is only like a baby starting to learn how to chew, not even crawl, walk and run! Professionalism is not how many cameras you have, how many lenses you own, how many events and girls you shoot ... it's how you capture the moment in each and every place you been to, how much you're willing to scarifice to GET that image that makes you stand out among the crowd. |

The third image with the 50mm lens could be a little sharper? Maybe bump up the aperture to above 2 and increase the ISO to compensate for faster shutter speed?

QUOTE(Andy0625 @ Aug 29 2007, 09:27 PM) Dun mind at all.. but first comment first a bit ler.. im still a learner in photography.. hehe...this is high key which means u dun want any shadow on anywhere on the pic. and 80% colours of the subjects in this setting have to be in bright colour. This is what the lecturer said. LOL. but u can improvise.. OK settings part. White bg Two soft box facing the bg. adjust the angles and the distance so that the whole bg is totally white. one left one right. Two reflectors at the sides of the model. and Model have to be standing in front of the soft boxes. Two soft box in front. One high lever and one low lever. one soft box on the top, angle pointing down(have to be taller than the model.) and one softbox on the bottom, angle pointing up. So that there will be no shadows of the nose or the hair or whatsoever.. This is roughly how the settings are. Yeah.. i used the 50mm with +4close up filter, it has problems(should say it cannot focus far) focusing far. So... i only attach it when i take really close shots of an object. When taking potraits i'll just detach it. as simple as that.
What i did is, i attach the uv filter first, then the Close up filter, so i dun have to detach and reattach everytime.. haha.. |

I think the snooker dude 1 picture is overexposed with the highlights overblown on the hand. For the 2nd picture, the image looks rather soft. Perhaps you could increase your F stop a bit and then increase your ISO to compensate for the shutter speed.

I wanna ask in this case.. what can i do if i want to expose the snooker guy's face but the lights are only shining on the table and the hand, and not the face.. and lights at the face area is very dim... thank youAs for the soft pic u mentioned, the highest ISO i will go is only 400.. i will always try not to go over 400 as there will be noise. And i was adviced by a professional photographer not to go over 400 if it's necessary.. haha.. but i will still try alternate ways next time. And yes, all pics are taken with 50mm prime lens. |

Perhaps take the shot in a way that the light shines the ball rather than overexpose it directly. If need be then PP needs to be done to try to hide the over exposure. As for the soft pic u mentioned, the highest ISO i will go is only 400.. i will always try not to go over 400 as there will be noise. Also if you really want to get the face in such a low light situation then you would definitely need to use a flash if you don't want to go above ISO400. Just my two cents worth. |

Alright thanks for taking time for the advice.. i will try fill in flash next time... but im afraid if i use flash. the ball will be still overexposed due to the flash? will it be? haha...
and also one more thing.. what if im in a snooker competition situation.. im not allowed to use flash... that will be hard.. haha... This post has been edited by derek87: Sep 1 2007, 10:02 PM |

Snowmei, teach me a little bit about fill in flash le... I know that u have to use fill in flash when the light source comes from the background rite? What i am doing is, meter the background adjust exposure compensation to 0 then about the flash part.... the motorbike pic i used -1 for the flash... is what im doing correct? and WHAT IF i need to use a very low shutter speed to get Exposure compensation 0 for the background? any other way for this situation? and one more Q, how to take a pic by using and adjusting the flash so that the skin tone will not look like reflecting? hmmm..... |

(forgot that you can use diffuser it will definately help to reduce the harshness) unless you use external flash gun... you can always tilt the angle of your flash... |

er...ok i noob noob but i try answer PART of your question...hehe...if you wanna compensate for the exposure try smaller f number...i think about f10-13 should be alright for motorbike pic... if still cant then try jack up to iso400 coz you said 800 will be very grainy... your last question ar... either get an external flash then use a diffuser or bounce of the flash from the ceiling...hope it helps...

Orenzai.. thanks for taking time to answer my questions.. but i think u din read the question carefully or maybe i din state carefully... what i mean is even if im using f1.8 and iso 400. metering the bg still requires me a, let's say, 1/8 shutter speed which will be very slow and often gets me a blur pic, are there any other ways to avoid this.. it's not that i want slow shutter speed, it's that i want to avoid it... above 1/20 and yet capturing the bg will be the best solution. The best is to refer to the MTF Chart of the lens. Controlling the aperture only controls the DOF and not the sharpness of a taken picture. |

The products are a little blur and usually when product shoots, the product you are shooting needs to be crystal clear.

What was the aperture setting for this shot? I usually use around f13 when shooting products.

As for the first pic. i purposely wanted the others to be blur.. and only focus the heart...
The other two... what was in my mind was. focus on the bottle and give the ribbons front and back a little of bokeh... I din know product shooting have to be a whole pic clear shoot. Hmm.. perhaps i should change my style... =) All are using F/8. |

QUOTE(soulfly @ Sep 20 2007, 07:09 PM) It's indeed not sharp, at least on my monitor. I think this is due to: 1) The close up filter, and 2) Jpeg resizing. You shall have USM the photo before posting this up. I know you want to play with selective focusing, but if more than 80% of the composition is out of focus, it looks bad. Unless it's a uniform bokeh. +4 closeup... the DOF is very very shallow... have to be quick when you recompose the pic... if not... you will see that your SHARP focused area "move"
I played with closeup filters before... They are wonderful.... but, recomposing pics is pain and need to be FAST and precise. |

Well I can see the heart is sharp but in product photography, you shouldnt just concentrate on one part of the entire object. Since one heart is sharp and the other is blur, the background would then be considered very distracting.

The message of the picture have to be, "Nah! this is our product! have a look." Therefore, the whole product have to be super sharp and not a single bokeh on the product. At that time.. i was too bored, so i tried to put in some creativity to use macro style on the product. Hehe.. din know it turned out this bad.. Haha.. really gotta learn how to control bokeh on photos.. QUOTE(soulfly @ Sep 21 2007, 01:53 PM) Alrite.. got it!!! |

U mean potrait pics of the hamster or my gf?QUOTE(soulfly @ Oct 3 2007, 01:24 PM) Me too.... the pics look like just another casual pics....nothing too special. yeah i agree with you too.. i feel there's something lacking.. I just dunno what it is.. Except for the 3rd hamster pic, that might tell something....but still lacking of something. Im not good at taking pictures which needs fast brainstorming camera knowledge.. like deciding the right aperture and shutter speed in 1 or 2 secs ... There are a lot of moments of the hamster which is great to shoot and will turn out to be a great picture, but once i point and tries to compose the pic, the moment is gone... he ran to somewhere.. im talking about in terms of 1 sec ~ 2 sec reaction of u shooting it. He just doesnt stand still, not like a dog or a rabbit or something else.. Anyway, any advice or tips on how to improve? This post has been edited by derek87: Oct 3 2007, 01:54 PM |

try to apply the rules of third for your composition, and also depth of field. also experiment with different angles and framing

QUOTE(soulfly @ Oct 3 2007, 03:11 PM) try to apply the rules of third for your composition, and also depth of field. also experiment with different angles and framing rules of third? u are trying to mean that 4 boxes in a frame? DOF? my gf's pic use kitlens, minor DOF can be put in.Hey, im a bit confused here la... which picture is bad in composition... be specific... i really want to improve... for me i think my gf's pic 2 is bad, because i did not control the BG's light well, her cap has over exposure and i psed to save it a lil , or.. at that situation i really need to use fill in flash to get a good picture as for the hamster, pic 3 is bad because i feel there's lack of something. pic 4 is bad because of wrong shutter speed, and i did not want to use flash to freeze the object, i was wanting a to see movement in the picture.. that was what im trying to do... all pics tells a story, Pic 1 - Introduction la... let u guys see the real face of my hamster mah... Pic 2 - Hamsters are similar to rats, mice. So they do... crawl in the dark.. Just like a stalker, did u notice the right hand lifted by the hamster? Dont u think he's like stalking silently to steal food or whatever... Sometimes you really need to look at a picture long enough to tell what's the story behind and understand the situation when taking that particular picture, whether it's a planned situation ( means u still have time to do trials and errors, for eg studio photography ) or it's a happening situation ( means u only have one shot which takes it all, if u missed it, it's gone forever). apply rules of third, dof, try diff angles.... i always see the same comment in other threads but very little constructive advices. If u have asked me who gives the best advices and tips, i would say compmac, snowmei, goldfries, shinchan, ac98 , mavik and there are somemore i couldnt remember their names. Looking on the surface only, they look like casual forumers which post forums and chit chat about their pictures and other ppl's pictures. But when u really go in to depth asking them serious questions, they will try their very best to answer your question and to make u clear about things u do not know. Especially compmac, most of the time i see him posting constructive advices on how to understand photography. Come on ppl this is a forum, the reason of posting pictures here is to share... share ur ideas... share ur techniques, share ur knowledge.... share everything u've got in mind. Help others, dont just leave them with their unsolved confusion.. So i think this is what i wanna spit out... Thanks. |

Here comes some of my constructive comments.
GF pic #1 Framing is OK. DOF also good enough but you seem to have focused on her cap and the coffee bean logo instead of her face. From what I see, you should be using the internal flash and has caused a harsh shadows especially due to her left hand. It also darkens the background too much and caused overall underexposure. An external bounced flash shot would be a better solution. Since you have buffer from the shutter speed, you can reduce the ISO to get a cleaner picture. GF pic #2 The picture suffered from blown out background and blurriness due to slow shutter speed. I guess you have already notice that. Always remember the 1/focal length shutter speed rule if you don't have IS lens. Some people with steady hands can go up to 1 stop below that rule and still take sharp pictures. Hamster pics Nice of you to post your hamster pictures. I used to keep a few myself about 10 years ago. Sure brought back memories. The best of the crop is the third one. It would be better to rotate the picture 90 degree clockwise. It would also help if you have taken the picture at an angle more to your right so that you can face the hamster front on. Nice control of ISO and shutter speed. I don't have comments on the rest as they are not that good IMO. Hope I'm not too long winded with my 2 sen. |

Yeah, and i understand in real life there's no more spoon feeding like what we were in kids' age. You really have to make the step urself to improve what u are doing. That's why im typing such a long reply to share my thoughts of what to think before giving out a comment. Comments means a lot to begginners. SO and again, u got it all wrong, the purpose of posting my gf's pic is to let u guys determine which technique is the best to use in a situation like that. Im sure you will also use ur camera to shoot ur family which are not celebs, ur camera is not only for shooting models right? So when it comes to times like that, what's the point of having a CAMERA not mentioning dslr, when u cant capture the best picture of ur family on casual outings while u can only capture great pictures of model posing for you to shoot while u can do a lot of trials and errors because they are posing for you to shoot, bear in mind. Anyway, im still in a learning stage, this is why i post normal human being's picture to learn more and to be more mature in photography before i go on a special photography planned session with a model. Either a female or a male model, i do not want them to be dissappointed of my photography skills after posing for a day. And yes, im planning to take her into parks, beaches, scenery to take pictures, and it's because i want to learn to utilize with whatever photogear u have in different situation/environment. Anyway, travis, u were my first inspiration in photography, because ur gallery was the first gallery i browsed taking pictures with dslr. For bright background pictures, meter the background to properly expose it. Then use fill flash to brighten up the darken areas. I still haven't master this technique with my camera even when using an external flash. Good to know that I have helped you out. Happy shooting! |

QUOTE(CompMac @ Oct 3 2007, 05:36 PM) Do have steady hands when you recompose a picture. You will easily shift focus when you do it with shallow DOF. Try not to breath when recomposing and when pressing the shutter. Alrighties! got it, that's what im doing for the first pic. Fill in flash is the way to go. Thanks! For bright background pictures, meter the background to properly expose it. Then use fill flash to brighten up the darken areas. I still haven't master this technique with my camera even when using an external flash. Good to know that I have helped you out. Happy shooting! |

QUOTE(derek87 @ Oct 3 2007, 05:49 PM) travis poisoning ah!!! Depending on the type of photography that you are interested, do consider between the external flash and a low-cost telephoto lens. IMO, the external flash is more important than a low-cost telephoto lens. Some of my little comments.
Composition of the pretty girl's portrait could be better by not leaving out the hands and fingers unless you are going for half body portraiture. Composition for girls with sunset picture is nice but the sun is overexposed. More silhouette with a proper exposed sun will be better. Meter at the sun and maybe decrease 0.5 - 1 stop exposure should be able to do it. The portrait pose before the sunset pictures looks a bit weird as the girl seems to be correcting herself due to you taking a tilted picture of her. Nice PP sunsets. Faster shutter speeds would be nicer for action pictures to freeze the moment. Finally, thanks for sharing and hope you had a great time there. |

Therefore, the picture i took was according to my tastes and styles i think. Here is another similar picture but different composition, let me know what u think ok? thanks. ![]() :The PP sunsets, i want to know, is there anything i can do to snap the sunset to look like this without any PP? :Action pictures, yeah.. it's my first time.. really want to improve on this. Most of the time will not be the same as on a proper LCD monitor. The PP pictures are not "real" and I don't think you can get those kind of skies here. I prefer the camera able to capture what I see through the viewfinder instead of what I can get through PP. Here's one crappy sunset shot I took quite some time back. ![]() I'm usually a lone ranger when going for photo shoot. PD? Do let me know if you ever drop by Seremban during weekdays as I'm working near there. Then you will have a photographer to accompany you. |

Not a bad attempt, considering u did not used flash at all. But i believe the pic will looked better with a flashgun, but u must know how to utilize it or else u might screw up like how my few pics suffered.

QUOTE(gold3knight @ Dec 10 2007, 10:58 AM) hmmm... colour and contrast and skintone... how do i have a consistency of those? i mean like i'll use different WB in different halls. different ISO in different light situations. Im using contrast +2, sharpness +2, saturation +2, and color tone +1 parameter. Is there something wrong with that? i noticed that if i dun use this parameter, i'll have to pp a lot. A few WB tweaks and brightness are done with those pictures, din use any photoshop tools. So i really would like to know how do i control colour, contrast, skintone with the camera besides using WB.For me, i dont like warm pictures, so for the grandballroom, tungsten WB is used for the pictures. For some of them, i used fluorescent, and rarely AWB. Thanks for ur comment, would appreciate if u can explain more. Thank you. Added on December 10, 2007, 1:20 pm QUOTE(FESEM @ Dec 10 2007, 07:26 AM) u also have a god hand. can shoot with shutter speed 1/50. Shooting at 1/50 is nothing. Im only using the 1/lens' mm rule as im using 50mm lens. canon iso control very good, for my d40, 1600 totally can not. T_T Anyway, thank you for ur compliment. Actually im quite dissappointed with my batch of pictures, coz im using ISO1600. I DO NOT LIKE TO USE above ISO 400, coz the pictures will lose a lot of details. I bought a flash that week, i have learnt using it before going to pc fair, tried a lot of experimental shots, but still i failed to use it in the pc fair. And also one thing, i dun have my diffusser, coz i just got the flash. LOL. AND one more thing. i dun like pictures which show that flash is obviously being used(having dark backgrounds and harsh light on the face). So that is why i ended up shooting at ISO1600. >< This post has been edited by derek87: Dec 10 2007, 01:20 PM |

High iso resulting high level of noise

QUOTE(derek87 @ Dec 10 2007, 01:13 PM) hmmm... colour and contrast and skintone... how do i have a consistency of those? i mean like i'll use different WB in different halls. different ISO in different light situations. So i really would like to know how do i control colour, contrast, skintone with the camera besides using WB. High ISO w/o using a flashgun is dangerous as this will resulting on a noisy photos. Personally, i only use ISO1600 depending on situations. Later in my TXN shots i will explain when i use ISO1600. Just my 2nd cents |

WB is as much part of the important elements to your photos' exposure. dun believe me, try to make your wb off in your next shooting. It wouldn't matter how well you meter your photo if your wb is off.

Frankly speaking... PC Fair 3 was rather boring.
- the promoters are too "aggressive" and I could not browse and choose the the stuffs. - the models are very "funny"... some of them refused to pose at all, most of them covered their bodies with huge leaflets.... so, what is the point if they are are wearing nice, pretty and sexy dress if in the end they were reluctant... i think the organizers should get more open-&-crazy-posing-minded models.... it's is funny when we get these photos online or publish in the newspapers.... |

Personally, i only use ISO1600 depending on situations. Later in my TXN shots i will explain when i use ISO1600. I read quite a couple of articles on WBs, using AWB with jpeg is dangerous(raw can be still be saved), playing with the WB actually means getting a perfect white in pictures, which also means, if an object is actually white, but it turned out to be another colour in the picture, this means ur WB is wrong. Correct me if im wrong. Also on WB, i learnt that the best policy is just to use back auto. Play around with the exposure meter is more important than the WB. Just my 2nd cents I personally think that both WB and exposure is important. Good exposure, wrong WB = A 3 year old colouring a human's face blue or something. Bad exposure, good WB = cant see a thing, nothing to judge. hahaha.. And i wont be that stupid to make my WB off in my next shooting, cause i experienced that before. =PAnyway. u have not answer me. In what sense and how do u judge color, contrast and skintone's consistency of a picture in different light situations? I will be enlightened if u can really light up my mind. Thanks!!
