While the 1st pic & the last one is okay, the majority of them needs to go lower, and always remember to take from the head until the stomach at max.

whats the theory for that?

Hmm for portraits its not advisable to take the whole body as i was told by shinchan before. Maybe u can ask his opinion, but for portraits its better to take from head to the body, preferably before the stomach (so wont expose their fat, tongue.gif )

No 2 will look great for those taking portrait pics in the studio, but 1st, reduce the warmness of the color. As many says, pic no 3 seems noisy. sweat.gif

thank you for ur advice there.. yeah... i understand what u mean.. I myself know what i want... the most important part for me, is to take a picture which looks like taken from a dslr. that's the only point of buying a dslr. and i love sharp colours.. really love them.. like what bbtat's(kevin loh) pictures.. his colour of pictures are really nice.. i believe he uses Nikon but i also believe that Canon can have those kind of colours too... haha...
BTW i dun have my own dslr now... all pictures are shot using my friend's 400D, that's why i cant really get to do trials and error with it, but my 350D is coming soon. haha... getting it next tuesday. got it for RM1900, an offer from Lim Kok Wing. planning to buy a 50mm f1.8 prime lens too.. Is it advicable? haha... i heard that it's a very cheap and good lens.
*
If u love taking portraits and play "bokeh" alot then the 50mm lens is a must have. smile.gif

I dont sure whether to say this but i felt nothing special on the portrait pics. Even a normal P&S or camera phone can do that. Maybe just i not an animal lover.

QUOTE(derek87 @ Oct 3 2007, 04:15 PM)
apply rules of third, dof, try diff angles.... i always see the same comment in other threads but very little constructive advices. If u have asked me who gives the best advices and tips, i would say compmac, snowmei, goldfries, shinchan, ac98 , mavik and there are somemore i couldnt remember their names. Looking on the surface only, they look like casual forumers which post forums and chit chat about their pictures and other ppl's pictures. But when u really go in to depth asking them serious questions, they will try their very best to answer your question and to make u clear about things u do not know. Especially compmac, most of the time i see him posting constructive advices on how to understand photography. Come on ppl this is a forum, the reason of posting pictures here is to share... share ur ideas... share ur techniques, share ur knowledge.... share everything u've got in mind. Help others, dont just leave them with their unsolved confusion..

So i think this is what i wanna spit out... Thanks.
*
Hmm unfortunatelly not everyone is free to spend their time to judge. Dont forget some of the photographer spend their "snake time" or lunch time to see the pics and post the comments if necessery. I consider myself not that good in commenting pics as i am still new but i do really try my best on giving comments. Constructive or not, in life, not everyone is kind enough to give you good/constructive advise. You yrself have to work hard to think what went wrong and how to improve it.

On ur portrait of ur gf, i just wanted to say that such pic can be taken using a normal p&s camera or even a cam phone, so i dont see a value of what sort of a "difference" can a DSLR will make on that pic. But most importantly, that is just a casual pic. I dont see the value of u putting that pic to allow other ppl to make comment of it (ppl might take it as a wrong reason, provided ur gf is rose chin/hannah tan tongue.gif ). You dont need a DSLR or good photography skills to take such pics.

Unless if u dare enough to take her into a park/beach/old buildings/scenery and take pics of her blending with the environment, then i can only see how you use ur photography skills.

I will not make any comment on the hamster pics, although i believe u can do better. wink.gif

Yes of course in life. But im sure everyone who post their pictures here is to hope for ideas and advices from others to improve right? Yeah, and i understand in real life there's no more spoon feeding like what we were in kids' age. You really have to make the step urself to improve what u are doing. That's why im typing such a long reply to share my thoughts of what to think before giving out a comment. Comments means a lot to begginners. Learning is never ending, So is photography, you will never finish shooting. I could even do something like shooting the same thing again and again, with hundreds of different ways to get the best out of it.
Good spirit. I like it! thumbup.gif

SO and again, u got it all wrong, the purpose of posting my gf's pic is to let u guys determine which technique is the best to use in a situation like that. Im sure you will also use ur camera to shoot ur family which are not celebs, ur camera is not only for shooting models right?

So when it comes to times like that, what's the point of having a CAMERA not mentioning dslr, when u cant capture the best picture of ur family on casual outings while u can only capture great pictures of model posing for you to shoot while u can do a lot of trials and errors because they are posing for you to shoot, bear in mind. Anyway, im still in a learning stage, this is why i post normal human being's picture to learn more and to be more mature in photography before i go on a special photography planned session with a model. Either a female or a male model, i do not want them to be dissappointed of my photography skills after posing for a day.

And yes, im planning to take her into parks, beaches, scenery to take pictures, and it's because i want to learn to utilize with whatever photogear u have in different situation/environment.
Ops my mistake. Perhaps if u mentioned pls comment in terms of lighting, then i might get a picture. You may want to consider a speedlight and try bounce flash. The flash will not looked hash on the face. Get the diffuser so the skin will look more smooth.

Good luck mate. Hope to see some quality pics from u. Learnt frm shinchan, ah leong n ac98 on that. They will give u really good examples.

Anyway, travis, u were my first inspiration in photography, because ur gallery was the first gallery i browsed taking pictures with dslr.  icon_rolleyes.gif Not only u inspired me, others too.. i dun need to mention their name. You guys know who. And thanks for taking your time venturing in my gallery, trying ur best to give both negative and positive comments which sometimes helped me.
Wow i am surprised and touched! Just to let u know on my page my pics on the earlier pages were pretty bad, i admitted it. But thanks to all the feedbacks i got here and i learnt from these guys, at least i manage some improvement although i still have a long way to go. You will never know u can do better than me or the some of them here! tongue.gif

wonder how many of you all are from PD.
I used to stay in PD, but i moved a lot around Malaysia.
Last time study primary one and two at Lukut. the move to some place else.
Then came back and study form4 & 5 at Sek. Men. Abd. Samad...if i not mistaken the school name  tongue.gif. The one before PD high school.
PD is like a cowboy town, but i love it.  laugh.gif

Hmm just to let u know i grew up in pd until i going for university. The high school u went is SEDASA, while i spent 5 yrs in its rival high school, STPD. tongue.gif Just wondering when u did ur SPM so i knew how old r u tongue.gif

Anyway pd still remain a, hmm , well developed cowboy town to me still! I would love to come back to snap some pics, not only the beaches but also the oldtown. smile.gif

Not a bad attempt, considering u did not used flash at all. But i believe the pic will looked better with a flashgun, but u must know how to utilize it or else u might screw up like how my few pics suffered.

Didnt get the nvidia girls? Thanks for sharing bro! tongue.gif

QUOTE(derek87 @ Dec 10 2007, 01:13 PM)
hmmm... colour and contrast and skintone... how do i have a consistency of those? i mean like i'll use different WB in different halls. different ISO in different light situations. Im using contrast +2, sharpness +2, saturation +2, and color tone +1 parameter. Is there something wrong with that? i noticed that if i dun use this parameter, i'll have to pp a lot. A few WB tweaks and brightness are done with those pictures, din use any photoshop tools. So i really would like to know how do i control colour, contrast, skintone with the camera besides using WB.

For me, i dont like warm pictures, so for the grandballroom, tungsten WB is used for the pictures. For some of them, i used fluorescent, and rarely AWB.

Thanks for ur comment, would appreciate if u can explain more. Thank you.

Shooting at 1/50 is nothing. Im only using the 1/lens' mm rule as im using 50mm lens.  tongue.gif

Anyway, thank you for ur compliment.

Actually im quite dissappointed with my batch of pictures, coz im using ISO1600. I DO NOT LIKE TO USE above ISO 400, coz the pictures will lose a lot of details. I bought a flash that week, i have learnt using it before going to pc fair, tried a lot of experimental shots, but still i failed to use it in the pc fair. And also one thing, i dun have my diffusser, coz i just got the flash. LOL. AND one more thing. i dun like pictures which show that flash is obviously being used(having dark backgrounds and harsh light on the face). So that is why i ended up shooting at ISO1600. ><
*
High ISO w/o using a flashgun is dangerous as this will resulting on a noisy photos. Personally, i only use ISO1600 depending on situations. Later in my TXN shots i will explain when i use ISO1600.

Also on WB, i learnt that the best policy is just to use back auto. Play around with the exposure meter is more important than the WB. Just my 2nd cents wink.gif
