Guys, just want to ask...had anyone try oval chain ring before ? Is it a gimmick thing ? ..... i seen alot of ppl recommended them...actually im having a dilemma whether to jump back to 30T or remain at 28T since i do much climbing....
*
I have had both before, still macam no difference. Pedal uphill still also very tiring LOL. I had a 28T chainring initially but I killed my crank arm which led me to change to a Shimano SLX one with a 32T (only 32T was in stock). Recently swapped back to 30T because I was having issues trying to tackle the technical uphill with 32T.

True.
Initially when i change my crank arm....it comes with standard 32T, i thought it is sufficient for me until i hit the hill....then i know the true problem
later i brought 28T and never look back since for the hill climb but im suffering thru on the flat road.....so i was thinking if i change to 30t oval might be best of both world.....climbing and also not to suffer as bad on the flat....coz oval give original 30T while give 28T at the same time

I also didn't feel much difference to be honest.
Recently just switch from 32t oval to 38t round chainring on my XC bike.
Apart from the ratio, the pedalling rhythm I cant feel the difference.
At least on smooth road. I rarely do technical offroad on my XC bike bcoz of my crap fork. sweat.gif

Yeah, alot of ppl say it will not make difference on the smooth road as the difference can only be felt on technical trail or climb..... hmm.gif

It is really work i think i will be great for me as best of both world.... i always wanted a better speed on smooth road and also ease on the climbing also and having a single 28T just wont cut it..... i know most will say why not go back to 2 by but for me rather kept my cockpit clean and less noise on the front

I believe first thing you choose a wrong bike to do so.

It can climb but slow only because it is heavy bike, actually i'm not aim do to championship climb...... at the end of the day, it is just leg power to bring you up the hill but also need to tackle to set used also....you cant be putting 38T and expect to climb well

I dono how you set up your santa cruz but since you said you convert 2x SLX to single ring. Then how about the rear? still using 10 speeds 36T ?

So you expect people guess here and there for your bike set up and advise you how to climb is it?

Fully revamp most of the old component to new one

Rear 11 Speed - 11-51T
Front single chain ring - 28T

like this should be ok.

Bike geometry for this bike not good for climb. But if you want then train stand ride in flat road first. See how long time you can stand.

After enough training then just train for up hill.

Certain things need to test it out yourself
Just like saddle.

Why not just buy an oval chainring and give it a try? If you don't like it. Can easily sell it off.

Way better than cheap china brand.
But beware of fakes.
Especially SR Suntour Epixon model.
I have one Epixon bought from FB, the serial number is legit when check at SR Suntour website, but after I disassembly it for service, I found that the damper catridge is not from suntour and the air spring side is nothing like the original specs. The top seal also stiff as fu**..
Now the fork is dead. Doesn't move at all even after I change the damper catridge. Even my old coil spring suntour is better than my fake epixon.

Left: Fake Epixon, Right:Legit SR Suntour Coil

Right side (spring side) should have plastic thing at the bottom so that it will lock the spring when tighten the bolt.

You can see the plastic thing I talk about at the center between this coil suntour fork leg.

New damper (have SR Suntour part number sticker) Working great this damper.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Old Damper. Nothing. This part clearly some cheap china damper. This damper is broke as I get it. The damper was stuck, very hard to move up and down.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take pic for the air spring side.
Maybe I was too mad at that time until forgot to take pictures. vmad.gif

The Serial Number.

When check at SR Suntour website, it is legit.
I suspect the body is legit, but the internal part is fake.
