You know, i've been thinking about just doing some casual riding since the road new my house has been remodeled to include a small bicycle path. But coming to all these bicycles forum kinda scare me, because most of the bikes you all use are like really expensive and not to mention the recommended shops are mostly for professionals or enthusiasts. Are there really no other decent selections for casual riders?

There are always got others bike like BMX, city bike. Choose the one you like. Example BMX also have a lot of fun.

Actually here really need another bike thread to discuss about casual ride.

Get a used bike. Search around online and do some research on what type of bike you would like to have. While doing that, do read up on groupset as well so you know you're not paying too much for a crappy groupset on a bike (used or brand new). Much better groupset will make overall cost of bike increases but you will have better riding experience.

Although I not believe those China made chainring are made from alloy 7075-T6 grade but now it seem cheap price.

Especially those bigger chain ring 40T/42T 104BCD RM21.50 and 50T/52T 110BCD RM26.

For those 1X drivetrain is a good choice.

hi, would like to advice.. am looking for MTB.. for start still cycle around park and on road.. before joining off road. for now have identify to get the camp pro. would like to ask on the following.

1) size. i am 168 cm.. some say S and some say M.. any recommendation. cuz some say is better to get M for male.. just not sure if it will be too big.. hard cuz no stock to try it at shop

2) spec.. i check they are coming with a lower range.. with deore gearset.
i am thinking if i should get the version deore, slx or deore XT. review seems to say diff is mainly on smoothness, weight and built quality..
do know it goes down to budget.. but am thinking if its better to get higher spec one from the start, or upgrade it later.. which likely to cost more.
any opinion on the difference and if its worth to pay more for the higher spec.

1. Usually at your height, M is recommended. Even if you find it a bit big, you can get a shorter stem to shorten the reach (distance between BB/saddle to handlebar).

2. Are you new to MTB? When I was new, I can't really tell the difference between SLX and XT. In any case, just go with the best spec that your budget can afford. SLX and XT now are really good. Can't go wrong with either. If you do get really deep into the MTB hobby, you will probably change to a new frame or get a new bike instead of just upgrading the groupset. lol.

I haven't tried the new deore but I've heard its good as well. Don't worry too much about it.

Don't worry about your first bike as well. No need to spend too much money on it. 99% of people that get hooked on MTB will end up upgrading/selling their bikes very quickly. You will discover that there is always something better and nicer to upgrade. lol.

Buy a new or used bike within your budget and wish list, and get used to it first on the road or parks. When you are ready, take it off road and see if its something you will like. You may end up liking it a lot or hating it so much. Then you can decide if MTB is the right kind of riding for you.

hybrid bike with rigid fork. Seldom bike shop will have ready stock for this type. Not sure is either low demand or less model be found in the Malaysia market. But anyhow you can try build yourself since that frame is hardtail MTB frame.

Hmm.. in market now still got 26" 27.5" 29". If you choose 26" 27.5" then that is not big different at all. But if you choose 29" then feeling is not same. M size in 29" and M size in 27.5"/ 26" you better go to try first.

now already 2021 years. not same like old time, you aim SLX XT groupset but at the end you only get is SLX / XT RD and the other parts like crankset / cassette / brake all are lower grade for complete bike. The manufacture very smart now days. Cut cost tons of it. Especially front single speed setting. You want XT , then put 1 XT in RD and use SLX on other component. Some more very geniuses pair it with MT-200 brake.

That also not important thing.

If you wish to ride bike in long term first you need decide either want go hard tail or soft tail. Then no need to waste more money in future. This is most significant in the first step you need to decide.

thanks appreciate the advice.. the price difference is quite alot.. the deore and the deore XT with some upgrade price cost higher than 50% more.
i will try the bike first from fren.. and see if i at least like it.. so hard to buy now.. when shop got no stock.
and ya, i am not sure if will like the off road or if i will have enough time for it.

yes hearing the upgrade cost.. give a scare... haha. somehow actually i think i will do on the road more.. but i dont really like RB.. any model of MTB you recommend for more of on the road and park usages.

i am looking for hardtail. based on your advice. i guess is ok also to go for the deore gearset. in in the end the slx and XT are not fully groupset anyway...

so if in to it.. then only upgrade ownself separately.

I would actually recommend beginners to buy a 2nd hand bike first, especially if you are not very sure if you would be riding long term. If you just want to ride park and road for now, get a hardtail. Check out www.bicyclebuysell.com or any of the popular MTB FB groups. Plenty of deals there. I wouldn't spend more than 2k to 4k for a good used one.

Nothing you can change regarding 2 pieces crankset even the most top grade model also same. If you are not often off road then you no need worry at all.

got 1 advise for newbie. If you buy complete bike even some famous brand please lube the BB and headset with water resistance grease.

If your bike is 2 pieces crankset then you need pull out the rubber sealing of that bearing and put water resistance grease on that. If too late do this, then the BB will gg.
