Yeah... 2G GPRS/EDGE service is still operating as usual in Malaysia, although there's limited places (such as underground LRT/MRT stations) already switchover to both 3G and 4G, or 4G-only.

It seems that they're thinking of ceasing off 3G first instead.
2G network are still being used today, especially from Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet-of-Things (IoT), mainly from commercial business and uses... Not for average daily consumers like us, except those elderly that uses 2G phone.
Although yes, 2G is "outdated" but somehow it still tends to generate some revenue for telcos.

If those devices were to be upgraded to support 4G, it's gonna involve some great costs to owners to buy and upgrade.
After all, those machines/devices uses less than around 50MB per month, where 2G network (either via GPRS or EDGE) are already sufficient to satisfy their needs, hence they don't necessarily need a high speed 4G network for their applications.

Either way, shutting down 3G might be making sense. We don't see many new 3G-only phones on market nowadays... Even the market's cheapest and lousiest phone are likely to support 4G already (whether it supports VoLTE or not, then it's different story )
For the elderly people that is not tech savvy ones, they are either still on their 2G feature phones, OR already on 4G-enabled smartphones.

All Malaysian telcos already supports VoLTE, except...:
Celcom VoLTE is available to all Celcom Mobile Postpaid plan customers using iPhone 7 and above only.
Maxis, don't have VoLTE yet at all.

By the time when 3G has fully shutdown, and if you use a 4G phone that doesn't support VoLTE, then it would fallback to 2G network during calls.

What brand, what model? How much and where did you bought?

I understand that you are patriotic to support Malaysian branded products, but tbh not every single Malaysian branded products is good, including and especially mobile phones...

Just because Go Shop or CJ Wow Shop advertises the product, it doesn't mean the product is definitely good.

And why you wanna buy a 3G only phone?

It is expected that all existing 3G cells towers will be upgraded to support 4G, so for that part, no need to worry in terms of places that is only covered by 3G now.

I'm not telling you to must buy phones online. What I'm trying to say is, do research first before you buy phones, from the hardware specs, to the prices.
Research can be done either by Googling online, or ask around the sellers in phone shops or friends that is good in phones stuff whenever you have any doubts and questions. That's all.

Don't believe everything that the promoters said how good and how cheap the phone is, especially from Go Shop or CJ Wow Shop.
They are paid to promote their products on TV.

If what you're trying to say is, your living conditions doesn't allow you to do research first before buying, then too bad for you la.

You can assume that their M2M and IoT devices has no longer relying on 2G networks lo... Either they're already on at least 3G, or 4G, or others (WiFi or LAN).

2G doesn't use as much spectrum as 3G does... For 2G, minimum bandwidth per block is 2x200KHz (2x0.2MHz) while 3G's minimum is 2x5MHz per block.
If you compare with speeds and capacity that you can achieve with just a single 2x5MHz per block with 4G and 3G, it's a pretty big difference.

I think is they wanna make their investment more worthwhile and overall benefiting to the end users, so they decided to abandon 3G and focus fully on 4G for coverage and accessibility first.
Cuz telcos also know that eventually they got to invest a lot in 5G too, and 3G is indeed a sunset technology already, so for telcos, it's like almost doesn't make sense to maintain and expand in the long run.

Of course, I'm not saying that 2G must stay...
Both 2G and 3G has to go sooner or later too. It's just a matter of time.

If the deep rural area has 3G service already, like I said, it is expected that they will upgrade all towers to support 4G...

VoLTE and VoWiFi is supported on Digi. But it also depends on what phone model you're using too.
What phone model are you using?

Yes it's unlimited calls to all network, except special numbers as usual.
And yes, it is auto renewable and your data can be rollover to following months as long the first attempt on renewal process every month is successful.

Special numbers that starts with 1300, 121, video calls all those...
If you usually don't call those special numbers, then just assume it as unlimited calls to all networks.

Except those one time passes like Cili Padi plans, those are not illegible for data rollover, hence any unutilised data quota will be burn.

My friend that uses Digi prepaid, his VoLTE and VoWiFi suddenly won't work anymore on his phone once he unsubscribe to his monthly data plan. He check at MyDigi app, it shows that VoLTE is enabled.

Seriously, is it compulsory to must subscribe to any Digi monthly data plan in order for the VoLTE and VoWiFi to work?? Daily/weekly/free basic Internet/1GB Daily Productivity data doesn't count?
