Malaysia plans to shut down 3G by 2021

https://www.lowyat.net/2020/220338/malaysia...t-down-jendela/

How does the gov expect everyone to have 4G & VoLTE capable phones? 4G probably might be OK but VoLTE might be a real problem...
*

If the 4G phone doesn't have VoLTE, then it would fallback to 2G network during calls.

QUOTE(saitong09 @ Aug 29 2020, 10:48 PM)
Means 2G still available?
*

Yeah... 2G GPRS/EDGE service is still operating as usual in Malaysia, although there's limited places (such as underground LRT/MRT stations) already switchover to both 3G and 4G, or 4G-only.

It seems that they're thinking of ceasing off 3G first instead.
2G network are still being used today, especially from Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet-of-Things (IoT), mainly from commercial business and uses... Not for average daily consumers like us, except those elderly that uses 2G phone.
Although yes, 2G is "outdated" but somehow it still tends to generate some revenue for telcos.

If those devices were to be upgraded to support 4G, it's gonna involve some great costs to owners to buy and upgrade.
After all, those machines/devices uses less than around 50MB per month, where 2G network (either via GPRS or EDGE) are already sufficient to satisfy their needs, hence they don't necessarily need a high speed 4G network for their applications.

Either way, shutting down 3G might be making sense. We don't see many new 3G-only phones on market nowadays... Even the market's cheapest and lousiest phone are likely to support 4G already (whether it supports VoLTE or not, then it's different story biggrin.gif )
For the elderly people that is not tech savvy ones, they are either still on their 2G feature phones, OR already on 4G-enabled smartphones.

---
All Malaysian telcos already supports VoLTE, except...:
Celcom VoLTE is available to all Celcom Mobile Postpaid plan customers using iPhone 7 and above only.
Maxis, don't have VoLTE yet at all.

By the time when 3G has fully shutdown, and if you use a 4G phone that doesn't support VoLTE, then it would fallback to 2G network during calls.

I understand that you are patriotic to support Malaysian branded products, but tbh not every single Malaysian branded products is good, including and especially mobile phones...

Just because Go Shop or CJ Wow Shop advertises the product, it doesn't mean the product is definitely good.

And why you wanna buy a 3G only phone?
You could get a much better budget smartphone from other brands, and it comes with 4G... Refer this link below, phones priced below RM500.

Shutting down 3G is part of the effort to improve 4G.

Anyway in a competitive market, telcos aren't going to wait while their competitors introduce new tech first.
*
QUOTE(nexona88 @ Aug 30 2020, 10:09 AM)
That the plan.
But would it really improve???
Hopefully....
*

It is expected that all existing 3G cells towers will be upgraded to support 4G, so for that part, no need to worry in terms of places that is only covered by 3G now.

no need to talk in hindsight, everyone has different living conditions, and also i prefer buy from real store instead of buy online.Besides, many models displayed in the website not available in real store, price also much more expensive.
*

I'm not telling you to must buy phones online. What I'm trying to say is, do research first before you buy phones, from the hardware specs, to the prices.
Research can be done either by Googling online, or ask around the sellers in phone shops or friends that is good in phones stuff whenever you have any doubts and questions. That's all.

Don't believe everything that the promoters said how good and how cheap the phone is, especially from Go Shop or CJ Wow Shop.
They are paid to promote their products on TV.

If what you're trying to say is, your living conditions doesn't allow you to do research first before buying, then too bad for you la. sad.gif

Malaysia government really doing upside way. Other countries shutdown 2G, maintain 3G bt our country shutdown 3G and maintain 2G?

If you say 2G is still using the machine-to-machine (M2M) for those using commercial and business purposes. I think can't make sense. Compare from nearby country Singapore, they already shutdown 2G bt maintain 3G. So is means that they don't use so called M2M and IoT for commercial and business purposes anymore?
*

You can assume that their M2M and IoT devices has no longer relying on 2G networks lo... Either they're already on at least 3G, or 4G, or others (WiFi or LAN).
Singapore small and rich mah biggrin.gif
QUOTE(jack2001 @ Aug 30 2020, 03:13 PM)
Same, I'm wondering why 3G and not 2G, spectrum used by 2G is way more valuable than 3G, and when phones fallback to 3G the internet is atleast some what usable, but if u were to switch your phone to 2G, basically can't do anything except calls.
*

2G doesn't use as much spectrum as 3G does... For 2G, minimum bandwidth per block is 2x200KHz (2x0.2MHz) while 3G's minimum is 2x5MHz per block.
If you compare with speeds and capacity that you can achieve with just a single 2x5MHz per block with 4G and 3G, it's a pretty big difference.
QUOTE
Although it looks logical to shut down 2G first, it isn’t usual for 3G networks to retire before 2G. It appears that Malaysia is following the European approach as several operators including Vodafone have started shutting down 3G while they retain its 2G networks.

The move to keep 2G in Europe is due to a significant number of applications that rely on 2G such as M2M and other connected devices. This could include payment terminals, security systems and other early GSM-based solutions. By maintaining 2G, it would give businesses and industries more time to switch to newer LTE-M and NB-IoT based applications.

Maintaining 2G would also ensure that users of feature phones would not be left out. Although there are more smartphone users these days, there’s still a significant number of users that use feature phones for basic voice calls and SMS.

I predict they want to save much resources cost.
Maintenance of 3G cost is quite higher than 2G.

So either way if u go rural area that don't have 4G, so u enjoy the hutan like walkie-talkie call. And no internet usage.
*

I think is they wanna make their investment more worthwhile and overall benefiting to the end users, so they decided to abandon 3G and focus fully on 4G for coverage and accessibility first.
Cuz telcos also know that eventually they got to invest a lot in 5G too, and 3G is indeed a sunset technology already, so for telcos, it's like almost doesn't make sense to maintain and expand in the long run.

Of course, I'm not saying that 2G must stay...
Both 2G and 3G has to go sooner or later too. It's just a matter of time.

If the deep rural area has 3G service already, like I said, it is expected that they will upgrade all towers to support 4G...
QUOTE
Focus on Sabah and Sarawak
Phase 2 of JENDELA will focus on transitioning towards 5G. Muhyiddin added that Sabah will greatly benefit from the development when it’s implemented in the state from 2020 to 2022. A total of 382 new communication towers will be erected while 924 communication transmitters on existing towers will be upgraded under the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund.

Meanwhile, 35 new towers and 1,048 transmitters will be upgraded commercially by providers to increase 4G coverage. A total of 251,166 premises in Sabah will be provided with fibre optic connectivity.

In Sarawak, 636 new communication towers are being planned while 977 transmitters on existing towers will be upgraded under the USP fund as well. Meanwhile, 49 new towers and 825 existing transmitters will be upgraded commercially. A total of 43,013 premises will be provided with fibre optic connectivity in Sarawak.

If that area doesn't have any kinds of "G" at all, then it's a gamble, either you might get at least a 4G service soon, or still continue as "No Service".

Well yes, but not everyone staying in deep rural areas can afford Connectme.
They've increased their monthly plans already, you know? No unlimited plans anymore..

Is this plan unlimited calls includes all network?
Is it auto renewable after 30 days?
Any penalty if cancel the plan?

user posted image
*

Yes it's unlimited calls to all network, except special numbers as usual.
And yes, it is auto renewable and your data can be rollover to following months as long the first attempt on renewal process every month is successful.

Special numbers that starts with 1300, 121, video calls all those...
If you usually don't call those special numbers, then just assume it as unlimited calls to all networks.

only POSTPAID with contract have terminate penalty. Valid for all telco

Thanks for the reply. But if it is unlimited internet  what is there to roll-over cos next month is still unlimited, No?
By the way, at 3mbps  it should be good enough for video streaming on the mobile.
Normally how long will the offer last?
Is this the best "unlimited internet + calls",plan from Digi?
*

Owh.. That rollover that I referred to, is for the biGBonus plans that has the usual GB quota limit ones, not applicable for unlimited 3Mbps plan that you're referring to.. Sorry for the confusion..

Normally, once you're on that plan, it shall last forever until you cancel the plan by any means (including change to other plans) or terminate your phone line.

DO NOT trust Digi CS for such maintenance/upgrading work is in progress. Those excuses are used to make you stop complaining.
*

Not necessary. It could be real one also.

If the network issue still persists after the period of their maintenance and upgrading work ends, just complain to Digi again. No big deal...

If still not solved, file a complaint to MCMC.

As what I know, all biGBonus plans are eligible for data rollover.

Except those one time passes like Cili Padi plans, those are not illegible for data rollover, hence any unutilised data quota will be burn.

Quick question...
My friend that uses Digi prepaid, his VoLTE and VoWiFi suddenly won't work anymore on his phone once he unsubscribe to his monthly data plan. He check at MyDigi app, it shows that VoLTE is enabled.

Seriously, is it compulsory to must subscribe to any Digi monthly data plan in order for the VoLTE and VoWiFi to work?? Daily/weekly/free basic Internet/1GB Daily Productivity data doesn't count?
