Maxis offers anti-spam service for cellphones

KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis subscribers plagued by unsolicited SMS and spam now have a weapon to fight back.

A new service to its more than 10 million subscribers allows them to control, personalise and automate their short message service to block unsolicited SMS and spam.

Maxis new business head Dr Nikolai Dobberstein said the anti-spam or blacklist feature was the first to be offered to subscribers by a mobile operator in the world.

“The blacklist feature works for Maxis numbers such as 012, 0142 or 017,” he told reporters yesterday at the launch of its Message Plus service, which costs RM1 a month. Included in the package are auto-reply and copy SMS functions.

“Spam has annoyed millions of mobile phone users globally, as well as our customers. For this reason, we want to help customers avoid receiving spam and unsolicited SMS.”

Explaining the auto-reply feature, Dr Dobberstein said: “If the mobile phone user is on a long haul flight and is not contactable or at a meeting, he or she may programme an auto-reply to all incoming SMS informing senders of his or her unavailability and perhaps providing information on alternative contact.

“If this auto-reply message is programmed before the user leaves Malaysia, all outgoing auto-replies will be charged according to the Malaysian SMS tariff.”

Under the copy SMS function, customers can copy an SMS received to up to 10 numbers.

For the Auto-Reply and Copy SMS services charges will apply. Maxis-to-Maxis SMS are charged at 5 sen each and Maxis-to-other-operators SMS are charged at 15 sen each within Malaysia.

Dr Dobberstein is confident that a user-friendly and lifestyle-relevant SMS-management service like Message Plus will attract many users.

He said SMS was the most popular non-voice communications channel for mobile users in Malaysia, which ranked sixth in the world for total SMS volume.
