Can anyone recommend a hotel or Airbnb in Tokyo for a family of four that is in close proximity to either the Skyliner or Narita Express?

Also, can anyone advise if a puffy jacket with 600 loft duck down fill combined with a Uniqlo Heattech thermal,  beanie, scarves will be sufficient for Sapporo in mid-December - mainly on around the city and otaru?

The jacket should be able to provide some form of water/wind resistant thou unsure if that will be sufficient for the season
*
if youre walking around alot, generally you will feel pretty warm in those layers. i wore single layer shirt and long pants back in tokyo during early winter JP (6-7C at night) and i was feeling pretty dandy while my gf was feeling chilly despite having a jacket on

another case was when i went osaka in feb and it was coldest -2C at night plus heavy wind, it was suffering. had to do many stops in between conbini and shops to maintain warmth

its better to layer up then shed it as you go when you feel warm or cold

Its not Visa thing. It just like a you want visit Japan, you must sign a paperwork saying let Japan Govt doing deep scan on you, everything. All info they gathering and start evaluate you got any chances will jump aeroplane into Japan. You allow Japan Govt peek into your personnel account see how much money you have. EPF contribution know you are B40 or M40 or T20.  B40 chances going in start decrease as Japan govt think you will jump aeroplane.

*
yes, min 5000 yen of in store goods value to get 10% off, the calculation will be done on the spot just show passport. the SRP already inclusive 10% so you just need hit that limit, very achievable if you ask me

QUOTE(RegentCid @ Sep 11 2024, 10:08 AM)
Yes. You will get back that 10% VAT. Tax Refund are not including Food. So you buy those Kit Kat, Tokyo Banana...etc etc......Those are not under Tax Refund policy.
*
not unless you buy those stuff from tax refund stores

i rmb Donki went to bundle in my whisky bottle and other snacks together with my other goods like facial cleanser etc and wrapped it up under tax deduction plastic bag laugh.gif

Nippon Rent A Car - All kind of Brand
Nissan Rent A Car - Nissan only
Honda Rent A Car - Honda only
Toyoya Rent A Car - Toyota only

Nagano on Feb are thickest snow. Alot Road will be closed plus you have any Snow driving experience? I mean The real deep shit super experience that kind. Nagano on Feb snow are Blizzard Level. Don't play play.

You need high performance AWD car + ESP + LSD that kind of Car to drive on FEB Nagano......Rent Cheap car = cari mati
*
thenks boss

completely zero in snow driving experience, im 90% sure ill suffer and 10% learn new skill sweat.gif

but the convenience of driving is very tempting cause you get alot of luxury to drive here there on my own time

was targeting like a compact 1.5cc type car with winter tyres. no AWD tho

Never ever drive on winter without AWD car unless you super experienced. Must have AWD. Even compact car also need AWD version. Toyota Yaris got AWD version, Honda Fit / Jazz also got AWD version.

No winter driving exp, i advise you dont take the risk specially Jan - Feb. Once Accident, all your vacation plan bye bye.
*
right? too much chance of error and really grave one. but thinking really hard on the convenience part. i kinda spooked by cases where people said they stuck at places without any transportation available, and they having zero knowledge on japanese made it even harder for them to find a way out of it

If no transpotation means the road or rail are suspended due to snow. If road was closed even youself driving also stuck. Japan winter, most reliable transport is Bus. Buses wil always run as long the road are not closed. No matter how big winter storm, Japan buses services will never stop. Those driver are all God level.
*
right? not unless sendiri fakap and miss the bus

i guess ill shelf the idea of driving then. the risks are much higher

another question, do you know when can booking for winter 2025 ski accom be done? i checked in several hotels/sites, some places only allows booking until Dec 2024, some places stated 3 months before 2025 while some already open and fully booked? rclxub.gif

Winter 2025 meaning January 2025 onwards?

Bookings should already have opened, and I'm guessing some of the more popular options would've sold out by now.

I was checking Marriott Hakuba previously for January and not much choices (rooms/dates) remaining.
*
thanks! yes Feb 2025 ill be in Japan

shucks its quite confusing on trying to book them thru japanese website as it kept coming back with no search results on the dates even back in June when i was testing to do early booking. cause booking.com/agoda ones are already limited itself plus mostly fully booked when i checked in early Sept

i need to really dig deeper

Feb should be better than Jan, although still considered high season.

Which ski area are you looking at?

I normally try to lock in my ski trip plans 6-9 months ahead of time.
*
currently planning for Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort, but i suppose since my itinerary is still partially done, i can still adjust to Hakuba/Shiga/Madarao if those spots have more slots or more convenient to plan from

my itinerary plan is as; only planning to try skiing first time with stay at Nozawa Onsen for 4D3N

KUL>Tokyo>Kanazawa>Takayama>Matsumoto>Nozawa Onsen>Nagano>Tokyo>KUL

what do you reckon? or should i try Hakuba instead since it is much bigger and can cater to tourists better?

Don’t quote me - this will be my first time skiing in Tokyo as well laugh.gif
I chose Hakuba this time around cos I heard it was tourist friendly - easier to get around, convenient food options and engrish ok 👌🏻
Will probably venture to other areas if this trip goes well.

not sure jalan.net foreigner can use or not but should be ok kut..they have english site but i always use the japanese ones, i think cheaper.
probably you will be wandering about the kids slope  laugh.gif but actually one thing I used to like about nozawa onsen it's they have one of the longest run in Japan..
from top to bottom like 10km, really ski/snowboard until your leg jelly by the time reach the bottom laugh.gif  laugh.gif
the forest run mid to bottom part the gradient very low, so very beginner friendly

yea see how later, I'll probably book only in Jan or something, see whether can drag the wife together or not otherwise it would be the usual single dog snowboard trip sad.gif
*
should be okay, only issue now is i need to decide where and what to do nia if in Nozawa Onsen. but so far almost 70% completed in itinerary planning. then its just booking liao

makes me wonder if the daily pass worth anot, my friend said Niseko has those points pass where you pay for certain part of the mountain you can access via ski lift. so they pay the bare min to reach where they like then really ski as much as possible before going down and call it a day. nozawa onsen side seems like its daily pass kind where just ski and take the lift as much as possible until end of day hmm.gif

can, let me know. we can sync up!

for nozawa onsen or most places, you can get the discounted ski pass from the hotel, it's cheaper than buying day pass yourself.

single point ticket might also make sense for beginner because u mght not be going up and down the mountain so many times or taking as many lift ride.

I usually buy 4 hours ticket for nozawa and whack it hard for half day, then save the energy for the next day, because the snow condition would be shitty in the afternoon laugh.gif
*
yah i hoping the hotel that i got get discounts on skiing, onsen and food

my friend also said beginner takes forever to come down mountain also, so ended up points one more worth lol. since ended up wont be using the ski lift so often

you tried before night skiing?

Eh nozawa onsen no need worry about onsen, there’s a shit ton of free community onsen, very fun to walk around town and explore random onsen to bath in each one

Yea, but ski should be easier. If snowboard then yea, first time literally lol sit on ground all the time.

Yea, I like night skiing although cannot go off piste. Fun, not so many ppl, blast down the hill in chonky ice laugh.gif
this one my fav night ski resort with night gondola, 3km non-stop all the way down, pure happiness wub.gif
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

*
yeah i thought there was a small charge like 100yen, and some more private ones that can go 1000yen/hr

haha see if really want to squeeze in night ones if really want to max out ski timing

which would you recommend? Nozawa Onsen, Madarao or Hakuba? im locked to Nozawa but at same time still checking others

I'm a big sucker for nozawa onsen though laugh.gif off ski time there's plenty to roam around and other activities to do.
i don't think you will do night skiing though, day time enough bruises and muscle sore laugh.gif

hakuba i need to check it out again because last year I only drop by Cortina for day ski, didn't visit the other main stream ones like Hakuba 47, Kashimayari, etc. and stay overnight.
previously i stay overnight in Hakuba okok je, need car to drive around for food.

In nozawa onsen the town is small enough u can walk without driving
*
one of my concern is that nozawa onsen being a smaller town will be quicker booked out and cant cater to large crowds since its quite popular

madarao is more "unknown" so it might have better chances in later bookings but bad news is night life there prolly nonexistent

hakuba OTOH should be so big, theres plenty of space for everyone lol. but being a giant touristy place also means you need deal with crowds too

yea, that's why need book in advance for peak travel period, can use like jalan.net to do it. if you need help with it just let me know.

idk, I prefer small town better, vibe is different compared to Hakuba..hakuba valley is one huge place comprised of many ski field, I stayed one time close to hakuba train station, er, almost nothing to do at night? even walk around just like typical japanese flat town. another time i stayed at some really nice cottage style place in hakuba, winter snow wonderland but far from everything else laugh.gif

Madarao have some nice and long beginner slopes, it's pretty nice although night life is non-existence unless you drive to other parts. lesson in english at madarao might not be as easy to find compared to the more popular ones. best part about Madarao are the trees, god i love them wub.gif

madarao big long flats on the left, access with one single high speed quad lift (longer queue on busy day)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

at madarao you also can try the single chair lift to the top (advanced), not many of these single seat chair lift left in JP laugh.gif
user posted image
*
like how advance haha. i saw people said 6 months in advance also not enough

right on bolded part? we want abit of escapism even while traveling. at least avoid the crowds or something since we've been through the crowds of Tokyo/Osaka kind

thats the very first reason we pick to go central japan where less people converge

sighs all look so damn good la TBH, and seems like none of them can go wrong
