Because Manila Airport very hectic, not really my thing.

After watching youtube reviews to check out their planes, wasn't that impressed.

tldr, No confidence in the Airlines, i guessed.
*
i think also cause manila airport is mostly an airport itself? not like Changi where its half airport half mall

unless heading out dont really have much things to do inside

sorta, if you short transit already feel too hectic, i don't even want to think about long transit. If you are gonna exit manila, then Philippines Airlines is not a bad option.

yeah if touch and go within 1-2hrs, it wouldnt matter much

but so far all macam min 12hrs laugh.gif

Speaking of theme parks, I’m seeing from trip blogs and etc that Disney and USJ is super crowded cos of revenge travel, anyone here who’s visited lately? I see some others say USJ is like 2hr queue for each ride without fast pass.
*
for my case in Disneysea late Oct, some rides went as long as 3-4hrs wait sweat.gif

not yet book, but browsing it on Klook, reviews were saying buying it on Klook is 2 times pricier hahah

ok did some homework, I'm staying at Nijo , so from there I think better I go Arashiyama forest 1st, then take the train from saga to Kameoka like what you suggested, is winter time suitable for the river boat ride back?

how long does 1 spend time in Arashiyama forest?

*
depends on what you want to do there, for a quick walk across the bamboo forest its relatively fast

but if you want explore surroundings expect 2-3hrs total, theres quite some distance to walk around

I want to play devil's advocate here abit just to keep discussions up. I liked kyoto but those sights were not as wow as i thought. I was like, that's it huh? 2 days is enough for me (i planned 3 days including almost 0.75day fot nara trip). Dont need to go everyone of them. After awhile, the temple, garden or shrine is same same. Can even factor in 0.5 day go nara by giving up some stuff in kyoto itself. But this is purely my view la. Dont get me wrong, still find kyoto interesting... and i generally like to keep my itinerary more spacious nowadays (old liao) even though i believe can do with abit of less time by skipping some stops. Hahaha.
*
i quite agree, while the sights are wow for me in terms of grandeur and architecture but in the end its similar (shrines/temples). if youre not a fan of them then spend the time elsewhere instead. dont need do what others do

heyo people here, looking for inputs from this thread. my gf is interested in checking out snow places so putting Japan back into the radar for winter around 10 days. maybe try out winter sports for few days too like skiiing. would also be interested in onsen ryokans for 2D1N stay, the mountainside onsen towns are extremely attractive, places like Kusatsu Onsen, Shima Onsen etc

been to Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto region previously, so looking at places like Hokkaido or Nagano atm for fresher revisit. some say Fukuoka would be great too during winter. so far more interested in places like Shirakawago, Kamikochi, Kamakura no Sato as they looks fantastic during winter too

only issue is for snow capped places, if Kanto region that would mean i can only travel during Jan-Feb session for high chance of snowfall? seems like Kanto only can get snowfall by Dec. Hokkaido can start earlier as itll snow during Nov-Mar which is longer, but i heard that the winter accoms there are very highly rated/expensive and quickly fully booked

what would you guys recommend?

marfccy if just want to dip toes experience winter activities for 1-2 days then just do daytrip or side trip from Tokyo ba. If want day trip then just go Gala Yuzawa (direct Shinkansen), if can spare 2-3 days can consider Nozawa Onsen, the onsen town itself is quite delightful, and can pair with the Snow Monkeys.

But yes the constraint on main island is that snow is more reliable only from Jan onwards.
*
thanks for the advice! yeah i was considering if lets say winter activities assuming 3D2N would be more than sufficient, 1-2D skiing to try out, the rest soak in onsen kind of stuff.

Gala Yuzawa looks not bad, bookmarked. Nagano region really wow in amount of onsen ryokan available too

seems if plan to Tokyo but head out to outskirts is still a good idea, was thinking cause if back to Tokyo it wouldnt be as exciting as trying out new regions (like going to hokkaido). but outskirt of tokyo still have a tonne of unexplored things

any expected pricing for Jan season onsen ryokans? so far seems like can go from 30k yen to up to whooping 150k yen if really splurge. its considered peak season?

if want to try ski activities, i can recommend Hakuba. But best to go in January-February.

if want natural onsen, can try places like Nozawa Onsen, Yudanaka, or Shibu Onsen (near to Snow Monkey Park)

if want cheaper onsen area, can try Okuhida town near Takayama.
*
thanks!

so far ive narrowed down to Feb-March travel, not sure yet where for ski activities since Hakuba i heard is packed. Shiga Kogen another in list since near several other sites like Snow Monkey also.

onsen seems like targeting Nozawa Onsen. Got ski resort plus kamakura no sato there too, maybe its one shot can do all at there

how cheap is cheap haha. ive been bombed with accoms in onsen village that are costing like RM1k/night sweat.gif

oh ya, there are also ski resorts at nozawa onsen and myoko kogen (near Nozawa). U can also try Shiga Kogen.

Okuhida region hotel rates are cheaper (roughly RM300 per night) bcos nothing much there except Shin Hotaka ropeway.
*
not bad, do they come with dinner and breakfast too?

feel like the ones at lower pricing are usually western based rooms too

actually i do not know the details because I have not stayed there.

I stayed at Takayama instead because there are more things there but I remember seeing lower hotel rates in the Okuhida region when i was comparing the hotel rates at the surrounding Takayama area during the Jan-Feb period.
*
need to do more research, alot of these stays also need to go to their main site to book than booking/agoda kind

quite painful to try to read through japanese sweat.gif

you been to Shirakawa-go since its nearby Takayama?

yup i've driven to Shirakawago and Shin-Hotaka ropeway during winter. I stayed at Takayama as a base.

Between the two, Shin Hotaka ropeway is so much nicer to visit.
*
nice, how is driving during winter like? felt like trying but at same time not sure if i can pull it off

did you went to Ishikawa/Kanazawa area?

About RM700 for 2pax 1 night with breakfast and dinner

just need to drive slowly. I usually let others overtake me by keeping to the left.

Nope, i haven't been to ishikawa/kanazawa area.

instead, i visited toyama, takayama, shirakawago, okuhida, shin-hotaka, hakuba, itoigawa, nagano, yudanaka, shiga kogen, togakushi

i took a ski lesson at Hakuba Goryu Iimori ski resort

another highlight is Togakushi shrine, it's an enjoyable hike through the snow up to the top of the shrine (covered in thick snow) (you need snow boots for this)
*
was watching some travel vloggers did hokkaido in winter, they kantoi the car by sliding off the road lol

real noice, what was the cost for the ski lesson? i saw some ranging from 14-15k yen for a day kind. thats without gear rental too sweat.gif

Japanese-style room with futon

Yea, very worth it with RM700 for 2pax half-board. food wise, i don't think it differs much from other ryokans - they still give you the region specialties i.e. Hida Beef, Hoba Miso etc. Ryokan that i stayed before like in Yufuin, Hakone, Lake Kawaguchi, easily cost >RM1k for 2pax half-board

ryokan/onsen around this Okuhida region is typically cheaper because not many tourists (not sure about now). It's a bit far out from Takayama, and ppl probably only fit this into their itinerary if they are also going to Shin-Hotaka Ropeway
*
yeah a friend suggested i try make the trip over to Okuhida as well

what do they mean by half-board btw? i saw this alot when browsing their reservation sites

thenks, today i learned new thing haha

i skidded before in a carpark. Luckily it's a wide carpark without much cars. I turned in without stepping on a brake and the car skidded a bit and i managed to steer back. Otherwise, i would drive slowly.

14k yen per person (full day group lesson)

https://www.hakubasnowsports.com/adult-group-lessons

gear rental is separate
*
damn, yeah all the horror stories during winter driving sighs. i checked pricing from Toyota, seems like around 10k+ yen/day (RM300), i need to think this thoroughly, its still exp hmm.gif

ahhh 14k yen should be included with 1 day ski pass right? gear rental should cost additional 6+k yen.. lunch and snacking around 2-3k yen.. everything stacking up so fast

one day car rental is roughly RM300.

ski pass not included  biggrin.gif

but very likely u wont need it unless you are good to go on your own already, in some cases, the instructor can bypass the ticket on behalf for you.

i only started to use the ski pass on the third year of learning  biggrin.gif and i skied on my own on the third year of learning

oh yes, gear rental also need to consider
*
man my budget is really blown skyhigh already. so much for trying to keep it around RM9-10k for 14 days travel laugh.gif

i just want to try skiing for fun for maybe 1-2 days kind, mana tau barrier to entry gila high

so far biggest spender will be these (assuming i opt for it)

1. car rental (7 days) - 80k yen, not incl petrol and toll
or JR East Pass Nagano & Niigata - 27k yen
2. Onsen Ryokan - est. RM700-900/night/pax
3. Ski stuff - est RM800-1k/pax for lesson, gear, food and transportation
4. kamikochi winter hike - RM300+/pax

if really tight on budget, i suggest to do away with ski, unless you are a sporty person.

bcos skiing itself is not fun during the learning phase. You will fall, you will hurt yourself, you will bruise yourself, you will feel tired.

But on the other hand, it's a great experience. Only the third try (3rd overseas skiing lesson), I only enjoy it. biggrin.gif
*
i consider myself quite sporty so i dont mind the falling and failing to learn new stuff. its the only way to find out ill like it or hate it too, trial by fire lol. tho my gf isnt very receptive towards skiing since she wanted to spend more time do others

but we both agreed, go there during winter, staying near a ski resort, and not trying skiing!? sounds like a blasphemy laugh.gif

just found out ETC for Tokyo and Nagano might be different, thats another hurdle to consider

Main island resorts still relatively reasonable*. I’ve been to nozawa onsen, akakura onsen (myoko kogen) and zao onsen - before I had kids I preferred onsen towns rather than ski resorts - zao onsen was the cheapest if you’re on a budget, can also pair with snow monsters, and somewhat zao fox village (different side of mountain though so transport time is surprisingly long).

* Compare with Niseko, which is easily 2x-3x more expensive, and frankly for beginners and intermediates not noticeably better.
*
i see.. well, Niseko's one is very international based so not surprised if they will mark up alot

whats your recommended accom in nozawa onsen? im still searching around but couldnt decide which. not that i can book now either, seems like bookings in Feb 2025 still not available

nozawa onsen is pretty close towards the ski resort within walkable distance too right?
