Anyone has experience booking car rental for Hokkaido in the summer?

Don't know if Wakkanai too remote or what. It's about 2 months out and a few rental websites said the cars are fully booked out? @@

Summer is Hokkaido Peak season. Japan website very sneaky and rasict. Peak season, you need to have Japan IP address....you VPN your IP into JP, magic will happen.

wanted to rent directly from Rent-A-Toyota website but seems like they showed everything fully booked.

went thru some 3rd party website (Rakute, Tocoo, etc.) can see some availability, but they got their own markup + additional charges

hmm

wow, summer is hokkaido peak season, good to know...but because of the weather or what?
*
Summer is Hokkaido peak. Even car rental, hotel etc openly put surcharge for summer season. Other than the blooming flower, it's also the summer holiday season, and ppl escape to Hokkaido for the cooler climate (average daytime only 22-23 degree)

Wakkanai site quite isolated. Most of the cars is at the sites nearer to airport.
Shin-Chitose site super a lot of cars there.
*
Yea, I flew in to the airport. But anyway, I manage to reserve a car via Tabirai

May I ask for MH88 flight landing in NRT at 7am, do I have a chance to see Mt Fuji on the plane, if so which side and which seat would you recommend me to buy?

p/s: based on youtube ... the mt fuji view will be tiny cos it's far compared to landing at HND

Has anyone taken ANA transit flight at Haneda/Narita before?

is it true even for connecting flight (eg KL --> Haneda --> Sapporo), you still need to retrieve your check in luggage for immigration inspection at Haneda and then recheck in again to fly to Sapporo

I read this in ANA website
However, when flying into Japan, there is a customs inspection for all arriving passengers regardless of connections to domestic flights. Please pick up your checked baggage at the carousel, go through customs, and then leave the baggage at the domestic transit counter.
in this case, a 1 hour transit time in Haneda is definitely not enough, right?
*
ANA flight landing in Haneda is 10.15pm at night. I doubt there's flight to Sapporo at 11pm-12am midnight.

Regardless, just stay a night at airport hotel is better for the piece of mind. Just consider the "savings" from ANA/JAL promo (typically free domestic flights) being used towards paying the airport hotel

which airline do u guys recommend to book from KUL to HND / NRT?
*
if direct, just take ANA or MAS. JAL timing wise not very nice + I seldom see got sales.

ANA always got sales from time to time. The bonus with ANA is their promo also comes with free domestic flight transfers. Good to plan for travel to other regions. So far I have done

KUL-->NRT/Haneda (stay a few days)-->fly to Hakodate-->slowly travel upwards to Sapporo-->Chitose Airport-->NRT-->KUL

KUL-->Haneda (overnight)-->Hiroshima-->Travel to Okayama, Himeji, Kobe, Arima Onsen-->Osaka Itami Airport-->NRT-->KUL

KUL-->Haneda (overnight)-->Wakkanai-->Drive through Northern and Central Hokkaido back to Sapporo-->Chitose Airport-->NRT-->KUL

I would love to return for winter or lavender one day. Noboribetsu is non-negotiable as partner wants to visit the Jigokudani Valley (no idea why lol). Likely will skip Jozankei, so am looking for alternative onsen around sapporo, otaru, noboribetsu.
*
Since you already booked flight ticket, nothing you can do. if not, you should try to fly into Hakodate, then move your way up to Sapporo/Chitose.

I suggest you rent a car from the airport, much easier transportation wise.

you can try this route Chitose (overnight)-->Noboribetsu (onsen)-->Lake Toya (onsen)-->Niseko/Otaru-->Sapporo-->Chitose

I like the sound of this. Just that driving into cities like Sapporo (or Hakodate) will require you to hunt for parking lots (if you can't find street parking), park and pay for parking that will diminish the convenience of driving. Not all parking in the cities are paid parking and usually parkings at larger supermarkets or konbinis are free. Do not park at unauthorized parking spaces (there are signages and notices indicating fines of ¥10,000 or ¥30,000).
*
Technically, he can just return the car in Sapporo (one-way charge won't be very high anyway). then take highway bus or train to Chitose airport on the last day.

Unfortunately the ANA promo didnt allow to going/returning at different airport. That was the most efficient route
*
What do you mean? ANA promo certainly can do different airports for domestic flights

I did before
Hakodate then Chitose
Hiroshima then Osaka Itami
Wakkanai then Chitose

Anyone self drive when travel in Japan?
I am traveling with baby stroller.. taking public transport find bit hassle

Depends where you intend to drive. If big cities, you probably stress more trying to plan for the parking spots and costs.

Using strollers in Japan generally ok la. probably just avoid during office rush hours and you will be fine
