Pro:
Better CPU and graphics since using Intel Iris Plus
Cheaper price
Better scissor keyboard

Cons:
That 720p webcam though :/
Icelake suppose to be able to support WiFi6, but this doesn’t?
Battery life minus one hour from prev gen
Not sure whether screen brightness improve from prev gen

Hello everyone,
I would like to seek your help on feedback on a product purchase. I will be using the apple macbook for work mainly and basic games (Diablo/StarCraft).

New Macbook Air 2020 vs Second Hand Macbook Pro 2016 (Retina, No-Touch Bar)

The price is about similar which is sub RM4000.00.
Thank you so much.

What kind of work? I have the 2017 nTB Pro (Should be similar in spec to the 2016 you're looking at).

I've tried playing D3 on it before...if you're just gonna play casually (Single player campaigns and what not) it's not too shabby. If you're thinking of doing rifts, especially at higher difficulties, you're gonna want to crank down the graphics since it starts to lag with all the things going on in the background.

As for work, mine is mostly used for document editing (Latex, Microsoft suite and occasionally with the Apple's suite) and web browsing. Biggest advantage of being in the eco system is that everything syncs across all your device. Workflow is much easier so your train of thought don't get derailed too much.

Having said all that, if you're looking for portability, the MBP is ever so slightly heavier than the Air. Light as the MBP already is, the Air is lighter still. A good laptop is one that you want to take with you everywhere you go. Myself, I use it more in clamshell mode now, paired to a monitor. Much much better productivity.

Might I suggest the Macbook (the 12" one) if you're thinking more on work-on-the-go scenarios? It's powerful enough for coding (On Python) but super light so it can be lugged anywhere. At least that's what my friend tells me. It should be around your budget as well. Look up Lazada...I think I saw it going for about 3.6k-ish.

This.

Why oh why Apple would continue to screw up on this one?
Or they wanted customers to get the upcoming MBP 2020 which will have all the proper designs?

How typical of Apple. whistling.gif

Yeah.. expecting a good MBP, intel ice lake, scissor keyboard, better speakers ? , 14 inch screen ? brows.gif
Seems like a long wait though with all that's happening now.

Saw a review where the YouTuber water cooled the MacBook Air, instant performance gains and much lower thermals. But seems that Apple set a hardware limit because temp is cool but processor didn't boost further.

Saw Max Tech youtuber recommend to use Turbo Boost app to effectively control the CPU load vs Temp on MBA2020.
Perhaps this is the best solution so far.

Or we could just wait for Apple to release “firmware” to solve the thermal throttling issue altogether. laugh.gif

AFAIK, your’re gonna need her email address (must end with .edu) to make an account. Although I’ve heard some places you can just walk in and tell them you wanna buy under education discount. Certain places like the Taylor’s branch allow for walk-ins and apply for it. This is pretty dated information though. I remember reading it on the forum quite some time ago.

Your best bet to purchase during this MCO is to ask her to make an account on Apple using her school/college/uni email address (must end in .edu).

Well you did ask if you can buy it under her name. The laptop won’t be hers. It’s just the account to purchase it will be under her name. But hey, if you’re ok with paying full price, go ahead thumbup.gif

Macbook Air is already passed by SIRIM on 6th April.

Well, let’s estimate for fun.
The new iPad Pro 2020 was passed on SIRIM on 1st April 2020 and was launched today (9th April) which gives us about 8 days period.

So 9+8 = 17th April 2020.

But since 17th’s a Friday, maybe they will allow us to buy on the 16th April which is a Thursday, same as today for the iPad Pros.

TLDR; My MBA 2020 estimation is 16th April 2020.

I travel a lot so portability for me is important and in this case the weight and the size(slimness) matters. I don’t do any graphics or video editing stuffs so don’t need the specs of the pro. After all these considerations, the MBA is perfect for me..

Definitely UPGRADE because quad cores for MBA2020 i5 model

But beware when doing heavy tasks as MBA2020 got a flaw in thermal dissipation efficiencies. doh.gif

Update: Package was safely delivered by UPS this morning. This is actually my first-time experience buying online thru official Apple website (+ Education discount), and safe to say that both Apple & UPS service exceeded my expectation despite the outbreak situation.

Ordered: 16/4 (5pm, given shipment window 29/4 - 8/5)
Shipped: 19/4 (SG - CHN - KUL by UPS, given expected delivery 23/4)
Delivered: 23/4 (10-ish am)

Just in a week! 🥳👏🏻

Will the 2020 unit have better heat management system or just blowing away the fan at full speed even with the most minimal activity .

The cpu is not "connected" with the heat pipes. So, I'm just guessing that the fan will instant go to full RPM when the temp of the cpu goes up.

You can find many videos on Youtube showing the "downside" of this Macbook Air.

Nah I still stick to MBP but now even MBP have heat issues ...
This is just killing the battery life making it shorter and shorter ...

Please do a short review especially on the so-called overheat issue on MBA2020.

Would like to hear from actual user instead of from youtube.

Does MBA2020 really feels hot when even running a few Safari tabs open + doing microsoft word + listening to youtube?

Thanks & congrats on your MBA2020 purchase.

when i saw your post i thought that if I ordered the MBA 2020 from Apple Store, it should arrive within a week or two. SO I ordered mine on 2nd May (Saturday) and today at 1740 hrs (4th May) i received email and sms stating that my MBA will be delivered to me by 6th May (Wednesday), this is really fast man.. I ordered the base model MBA by the way, with education price as I work at the education sector. Much more faster than buying things from local seller at Shopee.

Is the base model capable to run Final Cut Pro?

Want to get one for my sister as she is going uni later, base model with CTO 512GB SSD.

Was thinking to give my old 2014 model to her but it's only 128GB so the storage might be insufficient.

Mine same configuration as yours and I ordered a few days later than you. Today finally status changed from processing to preparing to ship 😂

Yea standard i3/256 or i5/512 models would be delivered much faster than BTO models as I presume the stock levels are much higher.

Based on YouTube reviews, yes it is capable, provided it’s 1080p video not 4K. But do expect longer export times with the i3. If your sister is going to edit videos on a daily basis then it may not be a good idea. But casual use should be fine.

so just to check on the Education discount ... does Apple ask for any ID ?

Wife works in education, and thinking of replacing her dying 2014 MBA with the 2020 version. I went through the check-out process and was wondering if I should log into my Apple ID ? or do I proceed as Guest to maintain the education discount ?

Ahh saw your post in the MBP thread, guess you went for the MBA. I believe Apple doesn’t do any ID verification during check out, so you can proceed buying with your account.

thanks !

For those who got the i5, any reason didn't stick with the cheaper i3 ? Been trying to read / watch review ... but didn't find anything definitive except for "future proofing" which I don't buy into.

Will be spec-ing with 16GB RAM either ways.

Only using for light tasks, ie whatever can be done on iPad.

If you don't plan to run Virtual Machine related software (VMWare, Parallels, Docker) then it doesn't really make a lot of difference. The other use case that is CPU intensive is video encoding and will benefit from additional CPU cores.

More importantly, spec for min 256 GB SSD, 128 GB is slow(er) and will fill up quickly if you have any photos or video files.

The reason I went with the i5 —
1. I always believe if the upgraded processor (i3 to i5, or i5 to i7) has more cores, then it is worth paying for.
2. The i3 MacBook Air will be the only 2020 laptop in the market that costs more than RM4k that is still a dual core. laugh.gif
3. I think the overheating issue on YouTube is way overhyped.
4. After topping up the RM400 it is still within my budget.

But to be honest, I don’t think in real life usage there will be a noticeable difference between the i3 and the i5. Maybe the i5 is slightly faster but unless you compare them side by side you wouldn’t notice it.

Wow are you the author?
I would presume people who are undecided whether to get the MBA or MBP are average users doing regular tasks with their laptops. Professionals using intensive apps already know they will need the MBP.

For casual usage, my opinion is the MacBook Air is a better buy than a similarly priced base MacBook Pro. More storage space and better RAM are more tangible and relevant than a brighter screen or wider color gamut.

Yup, I'm the author.

I share your sentiment, although "better buy" is subjective, the MBA is a strong, well-rounded package for those starting out with the Mac, or casual/average users.\

Congrats on the purchase btw!

My i5/256GB order took almost two weeks before it was shipped out from China. Yours should be faster since you are ordering the base model. I think there are forummers here who mentioned they got it in a week.

All you need to do is head over to this link:
Apple.com Education Shop

You can buy under her name, or she can buy for you. Honestly, Apple doesn't check but keep a copy of the student card/teacher/ed institute ID just in case.

All that you can buy at education pricing is within the curated store, typically 10% off retail pricing.

Apple lists one unit each of a desktop Mac, Mac mini and notebook per year; up to three iPads and maximum of two software titles per individual per year.

You can find more info here too: Apple Education

Hope this helps!

I've good experince with UGreen too previously but couldnt find a local reseller for this particular accessory (USB C hub with HDMI). do you have a link to where you got yours ?
*
There's an official UGreen store on Lazada

This is the 6-in-1 USB hub for MacBook Air/iPad Pro/compatible smartphones (sorry mine was a 6-in-1, not 7-in-1 as previously stated)

This is the one I bought previously UGREEN 6 in 1 Type C Hub

They typically ship pretty fast, within ~1 week

thanks, looks like I'll be getting this hub.

also planning to mirror my screen, any idea if this would work with MacOS, iPadOS and iOS ? I messaged the store and they said yes. TV is not wifi enabled.

No idea if it works with Mac/iPad/iOS. I only have a Chromecast which works well with all devices.

You can cast certain apps (like Google Chrome, Netflix, iflix, Spotify, etc) to your TV. Not for everything though.

I bought a UGREEN USB hub from Shopee, similar to yours but with additional USB C power delivery. It has been a couple days but they haven’t even shipped from China yet. doh.gif

I’m thinking to cancel the order and get yours from Lazada.

Just wondering without the PD, can the hub handle multiple ports connecting at the same time? Like HDMI + an external HDD?

Should not be a problem with multiple connected ports.

Shipping from China can take some time. Might want to be patient smile.gif

Had a prior experience with UGREEN on Shopee where they never ship my items until it was automatically cancelled by Shopee. No reply from their customer service as well.

But this time it was all good. Finally shipped from China.

I got the exact same configuration as yours. It took one whole week to move from processing to prepare to ship. Then another week before it shipped. But once it shipped, I received it within 2 working days. For your case, it seems like it will reach just around Raya time. Not sure before or after.

Congrats on your purchase anyway!

I've had my orders cancelled a few times from Lazada. Not impressed. And this was during their Birthday Sales.

My experience so far has been very positive. Everything is fast and smooth.

For the past week, I am using it mostly for work, so mainly using Safari, Word, Excel, Outlook, and video conferencing via Microsoft Teams for 4-5 hours a day. Spotify is in the background most of the time when I'm not on TC, and OneDrive is constantly syncing. Quite typical usage of a MacBook Air user I would say.

The fan will kick on from time to time, but I can only hear it if I put my ear next to the keyboard. The thermal issues for this MBA has been way, way overblown. All because of a certain YouTuber. I have carefully gone through all the reviews of the MBA available before I made my purchase, and I noticed that only those who had installed the Intel Power Gadget on their laptop complained, while those who never actively went and checked the CPU temperature never noticed any problem at all. I mean, if the CPU temperature is hitting 100C but I don't feel it and can still type on the keyboard comfortably, that is good heat insulation to me.

Don't get me wrong. Of course Apple can and should do better with the thermal design. But they are still selling the base 13-inch MBP. How to get people to spend more if the thermal design on the MBA is as good?

Over the weekend, I will install a chromium browser (anyone knows Edge or Brave is better?) and try some photo and video editing. Let's see if the fan starts roaring.

Easiest way is go to the apple store at lim kok wing cyberjaya they automatically give you education price. Bought 1 ipad there for company (coz my company is at cyberjaya) the staff doesn't even bother to ask if you are student / educator they just wanted sales.

Tqvm. Quite nice the discounts.

Nice... After Raya la will go.

Scared buying online. A friend bought hp online during MCO. Delivered at door step is a tooth brush holder. Seller and courier both claims not their fault.

Hi there, im really keen to buy the Macbook Air 13", and would be delighted if someone can answer some of my questions:

1. Is there an "Education Plan" pricing like overseas? I don't see it in the apple malaysia website

2. Has it arrived in Malaysia? (i texted Switch and their stock only arrive late June 2020). If Yes, what is the preferred way to purchase them?

3. I'm looking to pay it via 12 months installment using credit card - Do I have to purchase Apple Care? if yes, how much?

4. For my day-to-day usage, I'm currently using company Dell laptop which works fine, but I have a full range of Apple products (iPad, Apple Watch, iPhone) which I wanna synergize with the Macbook Air 13". My usage mainly revolve around multiple safari tabs for YouTube, Online Research, reading company annual reports, doing excel calculations and power point presentations. That said, which upgrades are worth the money compared to the Base Model i3 with 8GB/256GB?
Is it the 16 GB (+RM 800)? The i5 (+RM 400)?

Thank you!

Overseas yes. For Malaysia and basically any other country, head to Apple's website and scroll down. Click on Shop For University.

Arrived. Now it's just no stock I believe. Preferred way of course via Apple's website. Probably you have more payment options there compared to going to a reseller/shop. (exclude installment plans if you want to purchase via Apple)

as per (2), installment plans can only be done from our retailers (Machines, Switch). Here's a link to Switch's installment plan page. Just choose your preferred card and read the PwP and TnC. Every card, bank and plans are different.

If you mentioned SAFARI only, then I guess the base model's fine but sure, go head to bump up the RAM since you have multiple tabs opened. As for the i5, it has been mentioned many times that it will not show much performance boost because of it's thermal system.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply.

Further doubt on my head (if you dont mind me asking). Will there be any restriction/anything that I need to know before buying via the Education Plan?

I plan to purchase under my brother's name (he is still studying in university) but I will be the one paying via VISA.

Is there anything permanent like his name in the laptop system? or anything else that i need to know?

Is it as easy as "Snap his Student ID and submit for verification" and wa-lah! enjoy RM 400 discount?

Also, I plan to use the macbook air to start video editing as hobby (Not main item, just wanna use it to make super casual videos maybe once a month, 1080p ones) - Will there be a significant performance difference for Macbook Air 16GB RAM vs Macbook Pro Base model?

Not OP but giving my inputs.

1. There are no restrictions in buying via the education plan, but as PoisonSoul mentioned, the education discount is only available via the Apple Website and unfortunately Apple Malaysia does not currently offer installment options. So you have to choose between paying one shot and saving RM400 or paying via installment and forking out the extra RM400 over the installment period.

2. You don't have to purchase under your brother's name, Apple Malaysia will not request you to verify that you are a student during checkout. (Source: I purchased this Macbook Air from the Apple Education store a few weeks ago and no verification was requested). There will be no engravings or any caveats in purchasing from the education store, the Macbook will be exactly the same as one purchased from the normal store.

3. If your goal is light 1080p video editing, the Macbook Air will perform fine, the Macbook Air is designed for short bursts in performance while the Macbook Pro is designed for sustained performance (because of the design of the thermal solution). Based on your description, personally i think you're better off buying the Air and saving the extra few hundred bucks. most people will never need the power of the Pro.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi, sorry I still don't have an opportunity to try zoom on my Mac yet. I have been using Teams though. No lag no fan noise no heat issue at all. Do note that however the i3 model does not support the virtual background function on Zoom. If you don't need it then its fine.

Yup you don't even need to snap the student ID. biggrin.gif

Your usage sounds exactly like mine. I have been using my i5/8GB for a little over a week now. I have thrown everything I would possibly do on a laptop, and I haven't managed to get the memory pressure above 50% yet. Even with more than 10 tabs open on Brave browser.
So actually you can just get the base MBA model with 8GB RAM. 8GB is definitely enough for normal usage in 2020, only upgrade to 16GB if you really want to future proof your laptop.

As for MBA vs MBP for video editing, the export will certainly be faster on the MBP, but the difference will likely be insignificant, unless you are making hour long videos.

Congrats on your purchase!

I’m using UGREEN USB-C hub which has also been recommended by other forummers here. You can look for it in Lazada or Shopee. The reviews there are very good. They have many different varieties, 5-in-1, 6-in-1, up to 11-in-1.

In my opinion, for photo and video editing, if you are doing it as a hobby or personal project, then the MBA is good enough.
But if you intent to make money from the content you produce, then go for the MBP. The speed gains from the MBP will lead to better efficiency, and you will be more productive and can earn more $.

I supposed he thought you meant how long it takes after you received notification for delivery.
Yeah, it takes a week from processing to preparing to ship. Then around another week before it ships.

I'm sure a lot of people here are aware of this dude from YouTube. The backstory is, when the MacBook Air reviews first came in, it was almost universally positive. The price went back to $999, you can get a quad-core MBA for the first time, it has the new scissors switch keyboard.. It is literally the best MacBook Air ever.

Then this dude out of nowhere came out with his 'review', and suddenly 'thermals', '100C' and 'overheating' become the buzzwords for the MBA. I watched his initial MBA video, thought it was bullshit, and went ahead and bought the MBA anyway. And guess what? I found none of the thermal issues mentioned by him.

I am not working in the IT or creative industry. I just need a laptop to do certain things more efficiently than my iPhone and iPad. And the MacBook Air just works for me. The MBA is like a Japanese B-segment car. It is relatively affordable, and it does the job. If you buy a Honda City, you certainly won't expect to hit 200km/h with it.

But just to be on the other side of the coin, it is actually perfectly fine to buy a Porsche just for daily commuting to work. It's your money after all.

Thank you ! Yes solely on personal project. Right now I'm using 2017 MBA, really like the portable and light. Sold my MBP just to get this MBA. Thinking to upgrade to MBA 2020. Thank you in advance !

Is it normal, my order placed on 21st May and until now still “Processing”, my credit card still doesnt show the rm 4k outstanding balance.

I checked on Apple Store app, it says “we have everything necessary to complete your order. We’ll update your delivery date when your order is preparing to ship.”

Yes. I ordered mine on 8/5 and the status only changed to "preparing to ship" on 21/5. You should expect the status to change by this Friday.

Got it few days ago. Overall review from me is good performance and experience. It is my first MacBook ever though. Used it for zoom meeting and MS Team classes just all good but once I messenger video calling my friend I heard the fan sound whirring but it is fine. A bit overheat but I don't think it affects much

Use it longer play videos maybe open Word and Excel side by side for work purposes then the fan wont just whizzing but it will be the sound of the Apache Attack Helos trying to lift off in the dead of the night.

Just received me MBA today.

Quick observation, the keyboard area does get quite warm even with safari (around 5 tabs) on while configuring some settings.

Anyways, any free utilities/app you all recommend to see the temperature and RAM usage? iStats is paid sad.gif

Congrats!!

My experience is, only the top part of the keyboard above the function keys will get warm. The area about the trackpad remains cool throughout.

iStats has a 14 day trial. Enough to get a feel of it. Btw, if you download the app from their website or the App Store, it won't work as they haven't added support for the MBA 2020 yet. Below is a link of a beta version I got from their twitter.

Thanks, will try it out!

I notice my MBA only gets hot when safari is downloading, or when its installing softwares, otherwise it remained quite cool even with Final Cut Pro X and safari (5-6 tabs) opened.

Overall im satisfied.

Still trying to learn how to use MacOS though (first timer), bloodyhell its such a learning curve

Nice and congrats!

Some says the first few days ur system updating in the background and also becoz u installing many software hence ur system will be heated up quite lot.

After few weeks it will settle down.

After u goes MacOS, u will keep wanting to use it more as the user experience is really different than windows.

Not sure how but u will be more productive and more focused. icon_idea.gif

It's a macOS bug. Nothing wrong with your laptop. The way to fix it is go to Accessibility in System Preferences, choose the Display tab and Cursor. Drag the cursor size from normal to large then back to normal. Your screen flickering issue will go away. It's weird, but it works.

But it seems like you need to do it every time.

you know what, i have the same issue when running safari alone without any background apps. It cools off almost immediately the moment i quit safari.
The funny thing is, it doesn't heat up or start whirring when i run Chrome with numerous extensions and multiples apps running in the background. Anyone else with the same issue?
Using the MBA i5/16gb/512gb, by the way.

Any hard disk drive would do the job. U can’t go wrong with either WD or Seagate.

Do not fall for “For Mac” description, its slightly more expensive than normal external hdd. its just marketing.

U can buy any external hdd and format it to HFS+

Of course. It’s even in the product customizing page that asks you if you would like to add FCP and/or LPX software upon purchase of your MBA.

So my thoughts on my MBA i5, 8gb after nearly 1 month of usage.

This is my first MacOS product, and i've mainly used it for Safari browsing, Final Cut Pro X (1080p 24fps videos), and minor photoshop + notes taking.

The MBA really suffers in thermal performance when it comes to few safari tabs + Final cut pro running at the same (sometimes FXPC alone will cause the MBA to lag down), and as a result I have to kill all the app, to restore the memory and let it cool down before i'm able to use FCPX smoothly again (FCPX gets super laggy and clunky after about an hour of usage).

Initially bought this to start my youtube channel, it was great, but it could be better (I expected too much for my first macbook, haha!)

Now after editing about 5 full length videos in a month, I cant deny but the inner frustration that grows in me when I have to stop my workflow for 15 minutes (2-3 times) per video editing session which usually takes me 3-4 hours per night. This is something worth noting if you are buying MBA to push it beyond its limit (im fully aware MBA is not meant for this purpose).

Cheers!

Nope, its very unforgiving if you are pushing it to the limit regardless of safari or chrome.

Just now, literally minutes ago, i was filming my video and my macbook air is in the background with 4 safari tabs opened (2 on my MBA, 2 on my 27” acer monitor) and guess what, I have to stop my filming session because the fan noise is too loud (had to pause and let the laptop sleep for about 5 mins)

Not sure if im using it wrongly, but thats pretty bad thermal performance considering the tabs I’ve opened are just common websites with simple pictures

Yes, definitely.

Kinda regretted because I started using more Photoshop/FCPX/Safari for more intense work with my YouTube channel - but oh well, didn't knew it would be capped that hard.

Add: I somewhat knew about this issue but thought it was overblown/exaggerated by YouTubers (MaxTech?); that is also why I only use Safari and not even Google Chrome (can't imagine that)

From your earlier post, I think your problem is more likely RAM related rather than thermal limitations. If you do get a MBP, make sure to upgrade the RAM to 16GB.

As for your MBA, I think it is a faulty unit and you should claim for warranty. There is no way the fan should even be on with just safari open. Safari and Final Cut Pro are well optimized for macOS, so you should be able to run them well even on a MBA. Can try call up Apple customer support and ask for a replacement unit.

P/S: can refer to the MBP user thread where a forumer complained about fan noise with ligh usage on his 15-inch MBP. Fan noise can be unrelated to thermals.

Thanks! Will try my luck and see how it goes!

If it's really my RAM issue, im not entitled for any replacement right? even with a fee to upgrade the RAM?

Also, will it be a problem if i return my MBA with a cracked Final Cut Pro installed?

If you are going to edit videos regularly then 8GB RAM is not going to be enough regardless of whether MBA or MBP. Yea they won't replace for you in that case.

But if your fan starts spinning at high RPM with just Safari open, then something must be wrong. Either hardware or software. No harm asking them.

Are you on the latest macOS version? 10.15.6?

I knowwwwwwww ! Im fully aware of that XD just didnt realize it was "THAT BAD" hahaha! (im obviously pushing my luck)

Jokes aside, I did consider switching to MacBook Pro (ok to do it with some upgrade fee) but what can I do with this MBA? Is there a place to sell it at a good 2nd hand price?

very light workload should've just pick the base model and add on storage instead, not i5+16gb

This is a great configuration and should have no problem for her studies.

No need to look for previous gen. The current gen offers significant upgrades for CPU and RAM with double the storage compared to previous models. For the price you pay, it’s good value for money.

For that price you might as well go for base model of the Pro 13” version. 8gb ram is more than enough for her usage. 16gb is if she does more heavy stuff like photo/video editing-rendering.

i3 10th gen with 8gb ram is more than enough for light task, or just simply upgrade to i5 if you want future proof, for the price of the upgrade option uve chosen u might as well go for macbook pro already, trust me the performance is limited on the air series, be it i7 or 16gb ram

yes its a no brainer, but if your gf insist in getting macbook air instead, upgrade either cpu or storage (preferable) will do, anything further than that is really a waste of money on air series.

I am having Air 2020 and Pro 2019 side by side...
if you ask me, the size and weight diff is ignorable...

Air i5 1.1 vs Pro i5 1.4...gain a little...
price match but u have 512GB vs 256GB...
so if u don mind of carry extra storage around...yea pro probably a preferred choice...
a 2nd thought is the RAM...but unless she is doing something heavyweight...8 still can survive...
but 16 is highly recommended
unless u can get a CTO version, maybe u could consider Air i5 1.1 + 16GB + 256GB biggrin.gif

yup definitely its a no brainer now given all updated, and when u put Air i5 base vs Pro i5 base...the diff is too little to call for the lesser...
to share a bit...I used CineBench on both
Air with i5Q 1.1 + 16GB vs Pro with i5Q 1.4 + 8GB
CineBench score for Pro still double of Air...so no way u go with Air unless for the cheapest i3, though 512GB at hands without need to carry a thing is plus...

Enjoy the Pro~

Even with 16gb, MBA is not gonna cut it for video rendering. It will help but there will definitely be thermal throttling. MBA only has 1 fan, and the location of the fan is not even near the heat sink.

In the first place MBA was never meant for heavy duty work. You’ll need at least the newer MacBook Pro which has 2 fans for better cooling.

Hi, I never use Macbook Air or Pro previously. Previosuly I use lenovo laptops, build desktop for my personal use.

Now thinking of whether shd get one Macbook. The usage will be use excel or words, use some softwares, use VPN, watch netflix, sometime will attach to Monitor. I will also need to bring it to customers to do presentation and marketing.

My concern which stopping me to buy Macbook which is so much expensive is...I worried that this laptop will just become very slow and lag like my previous few lenovo laptops, even add 16gb ram, ssd, after 3-4 years, it's slow like hell... even the boot... will Macbook having this issue?

But I actually like the look of Macbook and it's weight, since it's really light to bring it out.

Kindly advise.

Yes a MacBook is more expensive than a Windows laptop with equivalent specs, but I believe it is worth the price premium. No one can exactly say whether a laptop will become slow and laggy 3-4 years in the future, but based on my experience with my wife's MacBook Air from 2015, day to day normal usage is still perfectly fine. It was not exactly a fast machine when it was brand new, but it didn't slow down either after all these years.

Anyway, before making any decision, you should wait for the new MacBooks with Apple's own processors. They are announcing it a few hours from now.

Commenting on the excel usage. If you have shortcuts ingrained as muscle memory, you're gonna have a bit of a tough time using excel on a Mac since some shortcuts are different. With regards to the slow/lag, as long as you don't fill the SSD to the brim, your speed should be fine. I have friends using their macbooks (some air, some pro) for years and the performance is still acceptable.

As a side note, if you're wanting to meet clients, an iPad with a keyboard might actually be a better option.
