Yeah PS3 has practically no too many titles worth mentioning at the moment. But you see, to me that would be a good thing for Malaysians as PS3 titles come late and long. Why do i say that, well less choices would be better, if too many choices of titles, i think most Malaysians would most probably hope that the PS3 would be able to play local CD's one day just to catch up with the legion of titles available in their library.......
I'm going to support playing original, now that the PS3 is slowly catching it's pace and not launching too many titles. Even a meager income person can afford a single BD game a month (that is enough what, can appreciate the game more).
And last i checked, are developers more to what you say (easier to develop games) or sales of a specific platform? What if PS3 titles are selling like hot-cake? Would that make the developers to think twice in choosing between how easy it is to develop or sky-rocketing sales? If you are a developer, which would you choose. (this only applies to the companies that are developing exclusive titles for a specific platform, if software giants that develops titles for all platform, no need to say la)
Well, that's just my 2 cents on the matter.
Games are practically a bomb-hole-in-your-pocket expensive when you buy it in masses(think back the days where people buy PS1 and PS2 games, anyone can buy 10 or even more games easily whenever they want). Try buying it now(granted the PS3 doesn't have that many games yet). Yes indeed, as a Malaysian I think we can appreciate games are taking time to come out now on the PS3. But again, we have to look at the whole issue here. The gaming industry is a worldwide business, its good for us but definitely not good for more developed countries like the US and Japan(Europe even).
It is also bad for Sony themselves. Yes, the pass week with the launch of MGS4 the PS3 has just blast-passed Nintendo's Wii and DS sheer dominance. But really, how long would this keep up? No doubt, the sales for PS3 will be stronger than ever now but honestly speaking, I don't expect the PS3 to hold top-spot until the end of 2008.
As for developers, the Xbox 360 and Wii are undeniably an easier platform to develop for, sales wise or not. Indeed, developers will definitely think twice if the PS3 was selling as good as the PS2 or PS1. Thinking back, the PS2 was also a very difficult platform to build games for. But nevertheless, I don't need to mention the amount of AAA titles on the PS2 do I?
But then again, development costs for games has risen up alot when compared to the PS2 days. Game development cost itself is already 2-4 times or even more than what it was a few years ago. That is only development cost, we have not counted the amount of money needed for voice-overs, copyrights, publisher takes, promos and what not. If a developer isn't backed by a big publisher, they're gonna take the easy way out by developing on an easier platform. Something which we are seeing with the Wii at the moment.
Returning to your question, if I'm a developer who has no big publisher behind my back... I would generally create games on the easier platform instead which has probably sales(you know which I'm talking about) close to a PS3 if it sold as well as the PS2 did.
