Hi, ive been scouting around to get a d80. i went to this place in timesquare, forgot the shops name, ground floor. they offered me 4100 for d80 kit with lens, 1gb, tripod n bag. today was in fotokem midvalley and the guy said 4400 with 2gb, tripod n bag.i asked him why so much more expensive n told him that it was cheaper in timesquare n he said that maybe the battery n all was not original. could this be true? also how to check battery whether its original or not? also wondering what flash to get. want a decent but not too expensive flash coz im just a beginner. thanks alot...

Well, I got my kit at RM4100 without any other accessories. So, I suggest you to go for the shop in timesquare.

IMHO, Fotokem shops sells cams more expensive.

Well, the original nikon battery should look like this

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

If the battery doesn't look this this, then it's a 3rd Party battery. I don't think there is fake en-el3e, but got 3rd party. If 3rd party then it will have a diff brand name.

Since yourself say you're a beginner, you can go for the SB-400 or SB-600. But i think SB-600 is more practical and better flexibility.

However, of course if you have the budget, the SB-800 can guarantee better performance and features.

If you want to know the diff between SB-600 and SB-800, read this http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb600vs800.htm

yeah, if nikon battery, u will be able to tell whether it's genuine or not. It also has a holographic sticker.

Well, it depends on diff shop's cost price.

Or some just wanna make a profit out of your sales.

RM4100 is kit and they will normally throw in a 1GBsd/tripod/bag

SB-600 should cost from RM750 onwards. I think market price is RM780.

You can try to go and scout for it in Sg Wang.

Enata Photo, Tarita Sg Wang, Boeing Camera.

In lowyat plaza, you can try Bintang maju

In KL Plaza, I would highly recommend Foto Miami, as I got mine there.

Ask around and you may get yourself a good deal.

Yeah, that one is parallel/japan import.

Well, if you're on a budget, this way is not too bad. Given the chances of a faulty D80 is very low.

IMHO, it can't be trusted. One seller, just pay RM50 for every year of warranty.

But who's gonna handle the warranty? You have to go back to him, and he may just disappear.

You can buy the set, warranty wont be covered by Nikon Malaysia, you will have to pay for servicing and all.

international camera service center is a renowned camera shop. No need to worry.

You can also get from YL Camera in pudu Plaza, another place for cheap deals for lenses and body.

i think boeing doesnt hav d80 that comes with kit lense, tat's wat i asked months ago.

hmm ... the price for the parallel import is just tooo tempting, a few hundred bucks different. the seller in garage sales might be untrustable, but i think if really wanna get the parallel import, can try getting from shashinki, the price is still a lot cheaper.

another place in pertama complex which you can check out is selangor photo.

ylcamera wont sell u grey set unless u ask 4 it. Make sure u check the nikon malaysia warraty card

beside warranty coverage, u wont get free camera cleaning service at Nikon service center Petaling Jaya. just make sure Manual book got in English language. if not it's hard for u to learn about your camera.

I found that still many people got the info wrong.

Nikon service center in PJ will perform sensor cleaning for EVERY Nikon dSLR u brought in. They never check serial no. or asked for your proof of purchase or receipt or whatever. Be it local set or grey set or even stolen set.

Btw, for the user manual. Even if it's not in English, you may always download it in PDF format from Nikon's website.

can try ask pertama complex, international camera service ,mr.desmond for D80 kit, just mention u r introduced by buyer from there . icon_rolleyes.gif

rm350 for 50mm 1.8D can get from photo selangor , pertama complex oso, look for mr.ng. it's a very good lens which all DLSR user shud keep one, cheap some more....kit lens would be an all round traveller lens , but 18-200mm VR would be a better choice ( more expensive of course) , since u oready hav the kit lens , try get some other lens than another better zoom lens only.

can't accompany u for tomoro, next sat perhaps.

get the body alone, drop the kit lense, and pair it with the 18-200, and yes, the nikkor is very expesnsive, might want to consider sigma

btw, bsm, do update me the scouting result, am planning to pay by installment too for the body ... if the price is right, and spend money for lense. biggrin.gif

haha ... that is causing a headache for me too. hopefully can source for a cheap body. might consider getting the parallel import from shashinki.

hmm ... i think for flash, i'll go for a 3rd party at the moment, maybe later, next year assuming ... then only get the sb800 ...

though they said 0% installment, but the price is always higher. sad.gif

Well, if you have the funding, get the 18-200mm, it's a very versatile lens.

To share with you, I used to be crazy over the 18-200mm, but i read and read and considered....

I already have the kit lens, which covers the 18-135mm range. So I am planning to get a 70-300mm VR lens which costs 1.8K.

The 18-200 is soft at the further range of the lens.

After my telephoto lens, I will need to save up for a constant aperture lens like the Tamron's 17-50mm f/2.8. It's more affordable than Nikkor's 17-55mm f/2.8. (RM1.5k vs 4.8k)

Let's do some simple math.

If you were to get a D80 body only, it would cost you around RM3.5k for original.

Set 1
D80 With Kit lens 18-135mm= RM4200.

Set 2
Body only = RM3.5k
With 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM2.5k
Total = RM6000

Set 3
Body only = Rm3.5k
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM5300

Set 4
D80 with Kit lens (18-135mm) = RM4200
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM6000

Set 5
D80 body only = RM3.5k
Tamron SP AF 17-50MM F/2.8 = RM1200
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM6500

If I were you, and had the budget, I would get set 5.

It's good to have a constant aperture lens for low light conditions and without flash photography.

You will miss the 50-70mm range in between the 2 lenses, but nothing to worry about that. You just need to move back or forward of your obect by a few steps.

It all depends on your budget really. If you have the funds, I strongly suggest you to get a good set of lens to start with. They're suitable to start with.

I got myself a D80 Kit Lens because my funding wasn't that good at the point I bought my camera.

thanks man. u set out all the options really nicely for me. sorry for asking, how does constant aperture lens differ from normal lenses. cant u just set the aperture on the kit lens too? btw..u forgot to include sb-600 which would cost me another 700?

sorry...the smaller number on lenses state the distance or width? coz someone once told me it was the width

70-300 is a slower lense as compare to 18-200.

If you were to get a D80 body only, it would cost you around RM3.5k for original.

Set 1
D80 With Kit lens 18-135mm= RM4200.

Set 2
Body only = RM3.5k
With 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM2.5k
Total = RM6000

Set 3
Body only = Rm3.5k
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM5300

Set 4
D80 with Kit lens (18-135mm) = RM4200
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM6000

Set 5
D80 body only = RM3.5k
Tamron SP AF 17-50MM F/2.8 = RM1200
With 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR= RM1.8k
Total = RM6500

*
options 5 is indeed a good choice, might source for 2nd hand lense right now biggrin.gif

thanks man. u set out all the options really nicely for me. sorry for asking, how does constant aperture lens differ from normal lenses. cant u just set the aperture on the kit lens too? btw..u forgot to include sb-600 which would cost me another 700?
sorry...the smaller number on lenses state the distance or width? coz someone once told me it was the width
*
prepare to spend RM6500 - RM8000 for the basic set. hahaha ... that's killing.

QUOTE(bsm @ Jul 23 2007, 03:01 PM)
ah ok..no wonder...someone once told me like 18-135, 18 is the width and 135 was the length. thats why a bit confused.  damn...now 50mm 1.8 shinchan?? im sooo confused. i especially want a lens that can zoom quite a bit so i can take photos from far e.g. concerts and stuff. not that far like all the way from the back but i mean if im a bit far that the lens can help me zoom quite a bit.
*
hmm ... might consider 18-200 or the 70-300 then

Sorry I missed out on the Sb-600, didn't know you were getting it all one shot. Lucky you! rclxm9.gif

Constant aperture lens means that at any focal length, the biggest aperture size you can can be a constant f/stop.

For eg. Tamron's 18-50mm f/2.8

from 18-50mm range also it can be set to f/2.8 which makes it a fast lens.

However, for eg. the 18-135mm f3.5-5.6G, at 18mm, it can open widest to f/3.5 and at 135mm aperture can only open biggest to f/5.6. This makes a lot of diff compared a f/2.8 lens.

QUOTE
Zoom lenses without constant aperture will have diff biggest aperture at different focal lengths.

Simplified:

]# 18mm f/3.5
# 24mm f/4
# 35mm f/4.5
# 50mm f/5
# 70mm and higher f/5.6

Another reason why I am not getting the 18-200mm VR lens is that it has very bad distortion at 18mm compared to the kit lens.

Save the RM350 on the 50mm 1.8d for the lenses I recommended if you don't need the 50mm.

The 50mm 1.8d is a very sharp lens, great for portraits, close ups and macro (paired with close up filter/extension tubes/reverse ring)

One good thing about the 50mm 1.8 is that it's really fast.

It's great for indoor low light photography without flash.

But the downside is that it's not a variable zoom lens.

Which is why I ask you to invest on a Tamron 18-50mm f/2.8. thumbup.gif

I don't think you should compare 18-200mm with 70-300mm.

The working range for both lenses are different.

70-300mm is more of a dedicated telephoto, so it doesn't have the speed available on the wide angle part of the 18-200mm.

QUOTE
Biggest aperture on the 18-200mm VR

18mm f/3.5
24mm f/3.8
35mm f/4.2
50mm f/4.8
70mm f/5
135mm and higher f/5.6

QUOTE
Biggest aperture on the 70-300mm VR
    *  70mm f/4.5
    * 100mm f/4.8
    * 135mm f/5
    * 200mm f/5.3
    * slightly over 200mm and up f/5.6
If you compare the same focal lengths, clearly you can see the 70-300mm VR lens is a slightly faster lens than the 18-200mm. icon_idea.gif

oh man...its getting worse hahaha. anyway, like i said im interested in taking good normal close shots (not so much macro, more like standard portraits) and also some telephoto capabilities for distance shooting. thanks for all the in-depth info especially the grid pics n all, (although i cant understand it at all hehe). anyway, im still caught in between all of this. really no idea what to choose. is anyone free tomorrow or wed to go scouting around? thanks.

If you plan to get the 70-300mm VR or 55-200mm VR, the 18-55mm is good enough. For a variable zoom, anything above 50mm is pretty useless at night without flash/tripod/VR.

If he has the funds, I strongly suggest he gets a constant aperture zoom lens like the Tamron's 17-50mm f/2.8 rather than the D40 kit lens.

nope didnt check there yet. foto selangor quoted rm4550 for d80, 18-135 lens and 2gb. but i think they can go lower. they said its more expensive coz got no kit. so body n lens separate prices. International photo quoted 4250 for kit and 2gb. 4150 just body n lens. Pertama foto kit for 4250 also if i can remember. probably getting mine by this weekend or monday. anyone free and want 2 come along? thanks.

hey bro, SDHC tend to perform slower because of it's high capacity. They have slower read/write speeds.

try going for those normal sd cards with high speed. But limited to max 4GB.

up to now, what i got only eneloop battery 6pcs, hahahahaha, jehan miskin

well, as for me, 18-135 is okay except wide open, at wide open dont use 18-135, why not overlap with 70-210 or other sharper lens
