bro i think the better solution is use nlite to add sata driver into the xp installation file and create a new XP install CD...
coz ATA not as good as the original defaul setting....
i think better we do 1 time correct then no more worry after this...
coz install with ATA setting will occur many problem...
(correct me if i'm wrong)

Nowadays Dell laptop come with Vista. Newbie here, wanna ask is there any risk if reformat to Windows XP.

Don't worry, it will not void your warranty

For me, XP is much faster than Vista. Initially I have some problem with XP drivers, but now all solved and is working beautifully (check post 1)

Not sure if you want to claim warranty from Dell, you may have to restore the OS to whatever it came with. Let's say if it came with Vista, you need to restore Vista back. This happened to HP/Compaq laptops. A disclaimer and reminder by HP CS.
*
I've asked them before. It is not necessary

QUOTE(kingmax @ Aug 20 2007, 07:27 PM)
As long as you gather all the requirement and knew all the step , it'd be easy.As my opinion , if you are newbie ,it's better to wait until all the correct driver avaliable for Dell 1520 only you start installing.Vostro 1500 would be the same too.
*
I think it should already have XP drivers cause they are official selling it with XP preloaded

Yes, I've downloaded the latest Mega version and it doesn't seem to have quicktime in it.

They used to have in the older version of Mega, but quicktime was removed in the newer versions

Wah, then I have to at least take out and in 4 times a day
-go office
-go back home
-client place x 2 minimum rclxub.gif

They should have at least inform ma, or have a bigger size bag for 9 cell battery

To dzi921 and those who know,

Before you install XP, you must first configure a setting in BIOS else XP CD will not detect your hardisk

In BIOS:
Onboard Devices -> Flash Cache Module -> Set Off
Onboard Devices -> SATA Operation -> Set ATA

Would like to know why this must be done? What are the drawbacks of doing so? For my desktop I need to install the Raid driver for my HDD else will have problem installing XPSP2. Laptops no need??
*
I don't really know the reason behind it, but that is what DELL told me when I called their support

Try nlite software...You can take out those parts like movie maker, classic MSNMSGR, classic window media player from the xp cd..Then u can add in all the 1520's drivers and the SATA hdd driver as well...burn all these into a blank cdr and there u go installing xp with peace of mind...but before u do so, make sure u delete off the recovery partition(which u only want xp as ur os)... what i did is, just make a partition C:, boot from xp cd, format vista
Took me whole day to install everything in it. Lazy to format again liao unsure.gif
