Normally teams dealing with RPG are the one wanted by banks (to maintain and enhance (minor). This way is much cheaper than outsourcing to Slake (will handle major enhancement) or other companies)

If one is doing R&D using Java, C etc the opportunities are different. Probably same like being in other software company.

Major systems like Card Payment Systems, Loan, ATM, Core banking are written in RPG. Smaller modules or sub systems that requires newer technology are what the R&D does. You mentioned mobility so maybe phone apps are one of them.

Core banking system doesn't really require to have the best technology. They want a stable software and framework with reasonable maintenance cost. For tecnology, I believe silverlake also have other departments focusing on that especially on mobile and web.

Banks with mainframes are moving to As400 which silverlake integrated banking systems sits on. Their systems also cater for islamic banking.

So yea, As400 doesn't require great PC's and tools and yet still perform reasonable quick and efficient. You wont kena those null pointer exception by Java lol.

Also, no internet is bad but even given to you, there nothing you can find about as400 and the propriety systems.
