In May, Google unveiled Google One, a replacement for its Drive cloud storage service. There’s a free 15GB tier – enough room for about 5,000 photos, depending on the resolution. Then it costs US$1.99 (RM8.30) a month for 100GB and up from there. This includes several types of files previously stashed in Google Drive, plus Gmail emails and photos and videos. The company ended its Chromebook two-year 100GB free storage offer around the same time, while the Pixel free photo storage deal ended in October with the release of the Pixel 4.

Gmail, Drive and Google Photos have more than 1 billion users each. As the company whittles away free storage offers and prompts more people to pay, that creates a potentially huge new revenue stream for the company. If 10% of Gmail users sign up for the new US$1.99 (RM8.30) a month Google One subscription, that would generate almost US$2.4bil (RM10.05bil) a year in annual, recurring sales for the company.

"I was merrily using the account and one day I noticed I hadn’t received any email since the day before,” said Rod Adams, a nuclear energy analyst and retired naval officer. After using Gmail since 2006, he’d finally hit his 15GB cap and Google had cut him off. Switching away from Gmail wasn’t an easy option because many of his social and business contacts reach him that way.

"I just said ‘OK, been free for a long time, now I’m paying’,” Adams said.

Other Gmail users aren’t so happy about the changes. "I am unreasonably sad about using almost all of my free google storage. Felt infinite. Please don’t make me pay! I need U gmail googledocs!,” one person tweeted in September.

Some people have tweeted panicked messages to Google in recent months as warnings about their storage limits hit.

One self-described tech enthusiast said he’s opened multiple Gmail accounts to avoid bumping up on Google’s storage limits.

Smartphones dramatically increased the number of photos people take – one estimate put the total for 2017 at 1.2 trillion. Those images quickly fill up storage space on handsets, so tech companies, including Apple Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Google, offered cloud storage as an alternative. Now those online memories are piling up, some of these companies are charging users to keep them.

Apple has been doing this for several years, building its iCloud storage service into a lucrative recurring revenue stream. When iPhone users get notifications that their devices are full and they should either delete photos and other files or pay more for cloud storage, people often choose the cloud option.

Last time they can easily offer 100gb free as marketing gimmick because they know average user can only use so much.

Now 100gb usage on average user is totally on realm possibility. Imagine each of those 3.5inch HDD in their DC, typically 8TB - could only hold 80 users if everyone actually use their 100gb allocation. Now make it 3 x8gb HDD for let say, parity and backup. And now put the total gsuite users into the equation. And then you calculate all the energy costs to drive all those drives. Shit got ugly real fast.

people tend to think cloud storage is some kind technology magic that just dump your files into endless void. Not many of them stop to think that those data still has to go somewhere. And it is stored in none other than the very same hdd your have inside your PC.

yes I understand these points
maybe I was not articulate enough with my concern

why do they need to do this?

due to increasing demand of cloud storage directly proportional to the increase in number of users as increasing penetration of the web around the globe

thus they have to consider their cost of operations no doubt about that

why do you tolerate this? because from your point of view it's "still" cheap?

for me I just don't like being beholden to them because the mistakes of many who don't and won't learn anyway will affect us all

is this a fallacy?
am I just being self-important?

feels like being too reliant shackled by them and like there's no way out from it

Put in their drive means whatever you put there belongs to them and they can use it?

Also I hated gmail for not able to filter or block emails.

Easy.

Create 100 dupe emails.

Now you have 15gb * 100 = 1500 gb storage free.

Naked pix is the last thing you would wanna worry about. Maybe you don't know that there are software that can IDENTIFY things in the background. Just like how you guys can identify that red sofa. How they wanna use the data is to the limits of their imagination. For now, the simple usage of this is to like those objects to your social media account and suggest ads based off them.

Now if you said some shit and they wanna hunt you, saves a lot of time using AI to identify things in your pictures and do a profile of you. From there it makes life easy for the hunter. Whether such apps exists or not is up to you. Why do you think deep fake is very interesting

last time i work wit a small company which uses gsuite biz.
that time is still in beta, just need few $ to register, then can create unlimited account.
google edi mentioned very clear in their t&c that u're actually willingly beta testing & will change to paid service once final product is launch.

the gsuite biz launch, require to pay subscription per account.
boss merajuk, say wanna host own mail server.
i told him, ur user not much, u think hosting own server no need licenses & maintenance fees?
not to mentioned worst performance due to processing power & bandwidth & a lot less reliable due to no plan to redundancy.
not to mentioned hav to giv up a lot of crucial google features company been using, especially maps.

It will fail

So you need to keep a cloned backup around, and update it frequently

And you should keep them separate in case of physical damage

And you should still keep an online cloud backup with either the Big G or M in order to keep your stuff secure from e.g. fire

AND always keep your private stuff encrypted

Google gives you for free in exchange to mine your data. Now Google sees no reason not to charge the consumer since they have a huge pool of users. And it’s not like you got a better alternative.

But I’ve been using iCloud for many many years. Only 11.90 for 200GB per month, can share up to 6 members lagi. You guys go ahead and sell your data and your soul to Google..

Anyone using google suites?
*
I do.

It's a very cheap and reliable backup storage for my company. currently using about 90TB and counting lol.

downside is it's about 1TB of bandwidth per day (or is it per month? lupa dah).

I even store periodical images of every pc in my office, in the event of hardware/ransomware/harddisk failure I just restore the image from raidrive and lose a day's worth of work.

gsuite doesn't enforce the 5 user limit btw. 1 user can still get unlimited.

thus they have to consider their cost of operations no doubt about that

why do you tolerate this? because from your point of view it's "still" cheap?

for me I just don't like being beholden to them because the mistakes of many who don't and won't learn anyway will affect us all

is this a fallacy?
am I just being self-important?

feels like being too reliant shackled by them and like there's no way out from it

inb4 you don't like you balik masuk hutan lol

Tolerate....what?

I'm paying for a service, like I pay the nasi lemak makcik when I buy nasi lemak. Am I tolerating the makcik's practice of charging me to buy nasi lemak?

I'm really not getting your logic here.
