Bruised but not broken, AMD fires off another volley of price cuts across Core 2 Duo's bow

With only a month until the most anticipated AMD product launch in five years, the company is pulling out all the stops to get competitive before the Back to School buying season.

The AMD-Intel price war, now almost into its second year, was cited as one of the contributing factors to the $611 million dollar loss AMD posted in the fiscal first quarter of 2007. Following that loss came a 400 employee headcount reduction and a $2.2 billion cash-for-stock deal.

Almost immediately after posting its Q1 loss, Mercury research declared that Intel managed to recapture all of AMD's marketshare gains from 2006 in the first three months of 2007. JP Morgan directly attributed the Intel traction due to aggressive pricing.

Effective Monday, July 9, 2007, AMD will enforce the following pricing among its channel:

Attached Image

With these new prices cuts, AMD will also significantly trim its retail CPU portfolio. All single-core Athlon and Sempron models currently in the channel will officially reach end-of-life status (EOL). The ultra-low cost Athlon 64 3500+, Athlon 64 3200+, Sempron 3500+ and Sempron 3200+ will continue to exist in high growth markets: Brazil, Russia, India and China.

AMD roadmaps confirmed that other low-cost single-core processor families like Lima have already been phased out, just three months after launch. The company is still slated to introduce its 65nm Sparta family, based on the K8 architecture, in September 2007.

The company's next-generation architecture, occasionally dubbed K10, will officially launch the last week of August for server platforms, and sometime late in the holiday season for desktops. AMD has not issued pricing notifications on these processors yet.

AMD fired the first volley at the Intel price war when the company dramatically slashed processor prices -- just days before the Intel Core 2 Duo launch. Since then, both companies reduced pricing of last year's products to less than 33% of last year's street price.

Memos released to DailyTech from AMD distributors confirm that the July 9 AMD price cuts are directly aimed at pre-empting the July 22 Intel price cuts. These upcoming Intel price cuts will cut current Intel quad-core almost in half.

no matter what, my next upgrade on proc would be an entire switch. That is when there's entry level of 4core which selling at what AX2 4200 is selling now.

IMO, no point in changing proc frequently rite? Just a few hundred Mhz increment, where u can achieve that by OCing. And its not like it will bring noticeable effect in daily tasks cool2.gif

Its another dirt cheap price from AMD. It looks like 3800 and 3600 has been phased out from its roadmap. Now the X2 6000+ at the same price as E6420.

wah... would AMD's latest price slash even undercut Intel's newborn E21xx? i'd rather wait and see. but looking at the latest price list posted here, the X2 4000+ and 4200+ are already about to undercut the equally performing Pentium Dual-Core E2140 and E2160 in terms of price.

however, i'm sure Intel will slash the E21xx price even further after this.

still i'm proud of my new E2140 workhorse anyway hehehe... whistling.gif

the architecture is totally different , AMD proccessors are Intergrated Memory Controller, but Intel processors are not. So, it cannot compare the L2 cache within Intel processor and AMD processor. smile.gif

5200+ price also applies to Brisbane right? Or is it only Windsor is available here?

If Brisbane, if 3600+ can reach to 3GHz, then 5200+ can reach up to 4GHz or 4.2GHz? brows.gif

i would rather wait on the next gen of x2 or x3 chips. Because knowing that technology changes so rapidly over time, i would feel that investing in a cheap x2 would be a waste. But its a great move by AMD notworthy.gif they can get hold of the poor markets like the souh americas and africa by storm.. which means market dominance in smaller quantities.. in sum a large domination cool2.gif

I am waiting for the ddr3 to stabilze anyways. then ill buy my bulk then.

Why dont u go for a 3600+ brisbane core? and change the clock speed(OC) to a stable 2.5Ghz which is better than a 4000+ anytime? by the way, 3600+ is now below Rm200

this link will give you a rough idea about the difference.. basically the 2*512 is the brisbane core and the 2*1024 is the windsor core.. if i am not wrong and the brisbane core runs with a lower wattage than the windsor core. And i think brissy cores are also known to be great overclockers...

I think u will lost a lot if u sell this two item.
939 3000+ motherboard, for 2nd item, may be u can sell it around RM2XX- 3XX.
u sure will feel shock, frankly speaking , it is better to keep it.
All the technology item will drop will fast when there are new product.
Handphone, TV, all like that.

oh. no la. actually all processor price also drop very fast.

For intel, early of 2007, the price for C2D6600 still RM1100, but now u can easy get it at RM6XX in lowyat bulk.
Half year only, drop about RM500++
Intel will slash the price on 22 July 2007 some more, don't know how much the E6600 will drop again ... sweat.gif sweat.gif

Its already too much for AMD to cut price. The margin is too small. They should focus to introduce K10 on time and improving the architecture.

In my opinion, I think AMD will slash their price agian if K10 still keep on delay...

In my opinion, I think the material and labour cost to produce a processor is not that high.

The research and developement cost which make the processor become so expensive.

AMD K8 processor alrd produce more than 3 years, it is look like they alrd earn back the research and developement cost. Thats why i think they still can slash their price again. The margin still there.

However, Intel just produce C2D around 1 year, if they slash their price again and again.

Then, Intel may be the one who in trouble ?

It is just my opinion, dont shoot me if i am wrong..

It is just my opinion, dont shoot me if i am wrong..

i think its a good theory... intel might be in trouble after all, amd is pretty confident with their moves...

Funny take, and rather true on the AMD side. They're definitely having nice profit cuts from more base units sold, even if it wasn't as lubricious as last year. Intel has sold enough C2Ds to not care much; their profit margins aren't as nice as what people expect though.

Even if Penryn hi-k and 45nm process required quite some investments (it looks to be) and Barcelona with its supposedly godly FPU blows it away clock by-clock (on price it would be lower; K10 is still a sibling to K8, being rather distant though), Intel will still survive. Branding bullying sucks, as sheep get carried away.

Yeah, and when AMD's prices dropped drastically, imagine what happened to single-core proc value. My 3500+ single-core which I bought for RM 11xx was just recently sold for RM 12x only!!!...... rclxub.gif

It is because 939 socket processors alrd stop producing.

Actually It happen to Pentium D too. tongue.gif

Even u buy a Intel Quad core or AMD X2 now, it will depreciate a lot after one or two years. smile.gif

i guess technology is like that, as long ppl want better and more powerful products, nevertheless prices of older things are gonna drop, BUT why isnt proc prices like ddr1 vs ddr2.. should single core chips be higher priced since its older than dual core?

i guess the lesson learnt in all this.. is... just use your current rig till you cant use, till then u already save up enough, then buy the latest rig brows.gif Like one wise man says, dont fix whats not spoilt notworthy.gif

By the way, i think AMd will continue to cut prices as that will liquidify their stock to introduce new products with better architecture.. i think with this strategy, AMD will farther get an tinkle of an advantage over intel who might sooner or later be three or four generations behind AMD thumbup.gif

Amd is the king of "jualan penghabisan stok". But dont u think its an excellent way of selling products, think about it, u sell a million chips at a cheaper price, u still get profit. its better than intel selling about 100,000 chips at a more expensive price.smile.gif as usual like i always repeat, price and performance, and amd knows very well we are like a mob culture... if cheap and can perform kau kau, all will buy one..

AMD is good at producing inferior CPUs....

Intel is specialized in prodcuing quality and high speed CPUs

but why do most ppl still go for AMD? because its cheap..!!!!

Hope the Phenom will tie C2D so they wont need to cut price so low. If this continue, AMD wont have much profit and may 2nd class x86 CPU maker forever.

there has never been a point in time where AMD has been blown away, the fact has been that Intel has always been at the back seat of proc competition. Even since before AMD has always been ahead of Intel and all intel has to do is make better architectures from amds flawa.. like the song from Def Leopard-two steps behind.. same goes for intel and amd.

thats an understatement from you... i think u r oblivious to the fact that i said that its all about performance and amd does pwn c2d when it comes to overclocking capabilities... where on earth would u find a RM200 chip being Oc stable to about 3.0Ghz. only AMD thumbup.gif and who followed suit, Intel... of course intel produces "quality" stuff coz of packaging and also they learn from amds mistakes.. same like how the japanese learnt from the americans how to make cars in the 1970's.

when quad amd comes out then have to change mobo right? .

some say to be safe better buy intel with p35 mobo, then can change from cd2 to quad. AMD mobo can also like that? What about ddr2 to ddr3?

but AMD very cheap can save money to buy Graphic Card. but some say OC AMD can get very hot?

sorry for noob question.

im planning to buy a new pc system mainly for gaming and media stuff but getting headaches over which to buy; intel or AMD...

dont know whether to wait another 3 months or just buy from pc fair...

I think when u overclocking any proc its gonna have an increase of temperature. You have to weigh your options and look at your budget. Well from the budget point of view, the best option would be AMD because of its performance price ratio. And i believe you dont have o get ddr3 now, because its still very very new, its too expensive to be drooling over it. Wait for a few months for the ram to mature and become cheaper then get it.

Well about buying now or later, its a choice you have to make. If you do want a reference guide on what to get most from the budget you have check goldfries signature. He has an awesome guide thumbup.gif

3 months is for X4 only. I'd rather see how X2 performs.

If X4 is LAWLOHMYF'KINGAWDBEATSPENRYN, prepare to save up cash to buy Core 2 Quads in garage sales. laugh.gif

Otherwise, wait for the new X2s in 2008. They will bring at AMD archis to at least par, or even faster than C2Ds clock by clock. The dual-core section is still here to stay, and Penryn Duo would have a hard time being priced low when there's so much Conroe stocks not yet dumped. tongue.gif

In short: Buying now is the best. You get to use a PC for 6 months. That's priceless laugh.gif
