My 2 cent. Its all about the quality of our players. In 70s 80s we probably can say we are on par with other asian powerhouses. Heck our league was even featured in fifa 96. But then something happened that while other countries improved, we stagnated n regress. Dont forget the great match fixing scandal in the 90s. A lot of quality players were banned( rightly so). But this forced the promotion of lesser quality players with less competition to the first team. Which translate to less quality to national team. Then of course dont forget the disbandement of the national team after the 97 SEA games failure to get past the group stage. The senior national team only got back to international stage with 2000 tiger cup, where we knocked out the defending champ singapore in the group stage. N now we are still rebuilding.
