Hi guys, I got mine a few weeks ago and the first to thing I did was to test this baby out with some games.

Thought I share some findings about this machine;

1) Ran 2 games so far --> C&C Kane & GTA San Andreas.

No problems with C&C but can't run GTA SA EVEN after I've installed the right nvidia driver from that china web site. I think reason could be this
card is really meant for Vista not so much for XP and I am running it on XP Pro.

Solution? Install driver NVIDIA GeForce 6100 instead. Why 6100? Cause I tried many others which worked but will crash your PC after playing for
a while so I'll save you guys out there some time. Also the plus from using this driver for the card is that the performance has improved~!?
Somehow I think acer release the correct driver for this machine to run on XP but prolly did a half cooked job cause when I ran with the correct
driver even on C&C the performance sucks, everything seems to slow down.

2) The problem with the keyboard lag is not happening to me but the keys needs a bit more pressure when pressed else you'll miss a few characters.

So far no problems with this machine been playing games for the pass 24 hrs no crashing or problems whatsoever. I like this baby --> boots up fast and a real value for money.

Share your thoughts with me.

Cheers,

Bobby

HI bobby! Do you have the site where we can download NVIDIA GeForce 6100?  Will it run on xp home?
*
There you go, http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_162.18.html

I think it should run on XP Home, haven't tried it mine is on XP Pro.

thanks a lot bobby!  I actually tried to load it but it did not work.  The forceware 165.01 is working though and remains to be the best driver for my machine so far.
*
I've been installing a few packages, I'm not sure but driver GeForce 6100 could be from the same 165.01 package. Select don't search when updating this driver and choose the driver to install from list; then pick 6100 from the list. Kinduf like forcing driver 6100 on your computer. Ignore the warning saying this driver may not be suitable for you pc, blah blah...

The forceware 165.01 you are currently using (which would install GeForce 7000M by default), have you tried running GTA SA? Cos it didn't work on my pc when i used it and performance were poor. But running with GeForce 6100 worked splendidly.

It'll be good if you could give it a try to confirm this issue and save our brothers and sisters here valuable time testing it. But remember you need to force the installation, by default it would not install driver GeForce 6100 on your acer lappy.

Cheers.

Hi bobby!  tried the GeForce 6100 using the method you recommended and it worked also.  I do not have GTA SA on my laptop but tried NBA Live 07 on it.  As against 7000m, no observable difference.  If the 6100 works for some games and the 700m does not, I guess it is worth keeping the 6100.  thanks a lot bobby!
*
Ok thanks for the update~!

Yeah, you're right it might worth keeping 6100 if it works for some games and 7000M does not. Let me compile the list so far;

1) C&C Kane --> noticable performance improvement when using 6100 driver.
2) GTA SA --> can't run with 7000M, use 6100 instead.
3) NBA Live 2007 ---> no noticable improvement when using 6100 driver, but runs just the same.

Any gamers out there using this lappy, kindly update this list for convenience of others.

Cheers~!

Bobby

Nice, interesting discovery there  biggrin.gif ...I guess the 7000m is basically the same chipset as the 6100 series then...i'm gonna go try and test on more games to see if there's improvement or not.

BTW, after using the 6100 drivers, has it affected the startup time/shutdown time of the laptop?  Because have tried using the latest forceware drivers on it but the performance for startup and shutdown was slower by a few seconds (I mean, it was noticably slower than before).
*
I notice it too, but I found the reason wasn't because of the display driver (6100 or 7000M) but it was because I didn't uninstall the previous versions of the CIR drivers as well as the atheros wireless driver. Check your add & remove programs make sure that you don't have 2 installed versions of CIR or the atheros wireless application drivers.

Hope it helps. After removing those redundant drivers, my pc startup as fast as it used to.

Cheers~!

Oh, but anyway I checked the lappy and the old drivers were already removed.

Anyway which 6100 driver did you use for it because there's a list of 6100 drivers in the inf file:-
Geforce 6100
Geforce 6100 nForce 400
Geforce 6100 nForce 405
Geforce 6100 nForce 420

GeForce 6100,

Aiyoooo, hahahaha.

Ok, I think basically the drivers you need to install is found here;

http://www.acer.com.cn/driver/check_whole....4520&path=WinXP

It was shared by a member earlier, just check earlier threads.

Pay attention to the wireless driver --> use atheros & web cam is suyin, and if you read my thread earlier you will notice some issues with the graphic drivers as well.

Cheers.

Just a suggestion, you may want to update your DirectX to the latest patch. You can find it at http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/directx.html

Good luck.

If it still doesn't work, you might wanna update the list I've created earlier and report it as having problem running this game.

Cheers.

Another possibility is your power management setting (i suspect) Because my notebook have this issue whereby if it goes into standby mode OR harddisk turn off after 10 minutes etc. upon waking up the PC will hang when I restart. I suspect also if you are playing your game and if you happened to go for a toilet break for 10 minutes then upon returning to your game harddisk turned off it may cause a restart also (just guessing).

So you might wanna try to set your power management to never turn off and never standby (except maybe screen).

Hope it helps

UPDATE~! I found from GTA website that one of the best way to fix GTA SA crashing your PC during play in XP is to set the game in Win98 compatibility mode. You guys out there having problems running any other games with your lappy might want to try this method also~!

I'm curious how u figure out that the 6100 would work, if it was me and I want to mess by forcing drivers I would atleast chose the graphic card with an "m" suffix. 7000m 7300m, etc.

Just wanna know if, even now, you really think this runs games better in your case.
*
I figured it out by spending hours and hours trying out many different drivers (including other 7 series). It all started because I wanted to play GTA SA on my lappy. Seriously I can't be 100% sure 6100 is the best for our lappies - I only judged based on 2 games I'm playing right now; C&C Kane & GTA SA with good and stable results so far. If you find out anything new please share with us as I can only verify 100% that GTA SA would not run with 7000M, also playing C&C Kane the performance were poorer with 7000M (compared with 6100).

Also the win98 compatibility mode is a tip I gather from GTA SA site, happens mostly on XP machines just to share with you.

Cheers~!

Thanks to harrykh for your updates.

So now I'm recompiling the list of games tested with this lappy;

1) C&C Kane --> noticable performance improvement when using 6100 driver.
2) GTA SA --> can't run with 7000M, use 6100 instead.
3) NBA Live 2007 ---> no noticable improvement when using 6100 driver, but runs just the same.
4) WoW ---> noticable performance improvement when using 6100 driver
5) ROSE ---> noticable improvement when using 6100 driver.

Guys out there feel free to add on to this list of the games you've tested on this lappy. (please indicate which display driver you are using; 7000M, 6100, etc.

Cheers.

Personally i think this laptop sucks..
Now is the 3rd time i have problem with this model
1.one day after bought,headphone cannot be detected.sound still come from main speaker.send warranty to ALL IT,get back they said it's brand new.
2.one week later,cannot on,nothing on screen.send to acer SC at TS yesterday. he said he updated bios so will be more stable with win xp.
3.today when was typing my work,laptop just go blank and cannot on again!
This laptop is less than one month,but really gives me a lot of troble!
what the heck acer!

Anybody having same problem like me?
*
Dear Arafat, so sorry to hear that happening to you - when you just bought a new pc; you never would expect things like this happening.

But just to share with you, my experience with this laptop is that its a good buy; decent specs with a cheap price - only issue that I had was I wanted to use Windows XP and the drivers that came with this laptop is for Vista only. But the guys at this forum here helped a lot, you can check previous threads for links for drivers if you want to run Windows XP.

Another issue what was reported by some users was that the keyboard lagging (what you typed slow to come to screen) and that can be solved by downloading the latest BIOS (can be found at this forum too).

3rd issue is the graphics display driver. I found it works better with GeForce 6100 driver instead of the original 7000M

I suggest that you download all drivers for win XP, download the latest BIOS, get GeForce 6100 driver from Ndivia then format your PC and reinstall everything. Unless its a hardware fault this laptop should be no problem.

Hope it helps.

Cheers~!

i bought this notebook a month ago and im statisfied with it.. btw, can anyone teach me how to update bios?? thank you in advance
*
TO update your BIOS is quite easy really, follow these steps;

1) goto http://stkts.sertek.com.tw/notebook.nsf/f8...25733d000ecc57/

download 2 files there, even if you don't understand chinese you can see that there are 2 files for you to click on (right-click save target as and point to a location in your harddisk) ;

SWinFlash2034.exe --> program to update your BIOS

Z03_3619.WPH --> the latest BIOS updates for your laptop

After you've downloaded both files, just run SWinFlash2034.exe, there will be an entry field for you to Specify new BIOS file, just point to where you've downloaded your Z03_3619.WPH and click on the FLASH BIOS button --> and that's it~!

I've used it, and it's stable and help solves the issue with keyboard lagging.

Cheers~!

Hi there SK, what do you mean by rewriting the memory programme?? Just for my knowledge ler, cos I never heard of this kind of workarounds to solve memory problems.

Usually its either NOT properly inserted, or an incompatible memory type (just change to the correct type - many diff types of RAM) but never heard of rewriting the memory programme.... Are you sure its not updating the BIOS software?

Just for curiosity sake ler so everyone can learn new things.

Hey, for all you Acer 4520 owners, your CPU is not suppose to be soooo hot. Th reason is because your CPU & memory is running at 100% all the time.

Please download the AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology Driver (for XP & Win2003 server) at

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Techni...1_14098,00.html

This is to allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination to match the instantaneous user performance need.

Unlike Intel processors, this feature needs to be installed for AMD dual processors.

YOU HAVE BEEN ADVISED - DON'T COME CRYING WHEN YOUR PC HANGS FROM OVERHEATING OR SO HOT THAT IT BURNS A BLARDY HOLE ON YOUR DESK~!!!!

haha cheers guys...

Also i want to add that you may want to see this driver in action. I suggest you download CPU-z at
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

This is a free software that gathers informations about the devices running on your lap-top.

Run the cpu monitoring and see how it dynamically goes up and down (the CPU usage) depending the application that you are running.

That should give you a peace of mind that your lap-top is now working smart and not working crazy hard.

Cheers.
