Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has made an ambitious request for Budget 2020.

He is asking Putrajaya to provide RM6 billion to create 350,000 jobs over the next five years.

“Job creation is the ultimate priority,” Syed Saddiq told Malaysiakini in an interview yesterday.

“You can win 100 gold medals but if we’re not able to resolve basic economic issues which involve young people, which at its base is jobs, we won’t be able to serve their primary interest,” he added.

The “special budget” allocation is one of three priorities for youths that Syed Saddiq outlined yesterday.

He declined to go into detail about how the funds will be used to create jobs, hinting instead that it would be part of the Budget 2020 announcement.

“In order to elaborate on the plan, we need to wait for the budget,” he said.

Budget 2020 will be tabled on Friday by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

According to the Department of Statistics, as of July this year, about 524,800 people were jobless, with the unemployment rate at 3.3 percent.

Of this, youth unemployment is estimated to be at 10.9 percent.

The next issue is its sustenance. In the ketum example, does the gomen have the will to tackle the side effects of this industry which will ultimately end it? Example, abuse of ketum amongst the population, the crowding out of other traditional crops, black market trading, etc.

I realise the government really lack planning, attention to detail and execution.

Improve government service lah, saddik as usual talk kok no.1, some people reluctant to invest because too much of red tape, build factory pun have to go many many departments and it is damn hassle. I haven't count the atuk proposal of giving out bumi 30% share.

Why don't ask give 6B to ministry of education improve our horrid system so they can do more than black shoes? At least train our emerging generation to be more skillful and productive. (Or set up programs to retrain existing workforce)


Pretty sure ROI would be higher for the long term that way.

I can think of a lot of ministries more deserving...like the above mentioned education, human resource and economic development.

Actually to solve the solution is quite easy, move some graduate to blue collar and fill in the role, so that we are less reliant on foreign worker. For example Electrical is lacking of local worker, move some to this industry. Of course it is a hard way because u need to discuss with HR minister and also the industry feedback.

AI is not exactly new ady. We have lost the first-mover advantage.
Look around you. We can't even seem to have fully functioning street lamps and CCTVs. Let's get these basic stuff right first and move from there.

To attract top talents, we need to be attractive to them in the first place. Dangling fat pay cheques (even if we can afford it) doesn't work all the time.

AI industry can't create 350k jobs. Not to mention Malaysia doesn't have so many talents in this field.

That's why I said do retraining program for skilled trades.

Do you know how hard is it to find local skilled trades . All having to get foreigners , because there is no one skilled in the trades in the current generation. All the local.ones are old sifu about to retire.

Why 6 Billion and not 7.5 billion? the important question is not the figure you throw out, but how did you justify the figure and what is the plan/risk/value/objective/desired outcome?
