I am a fresh graduate computer science student who recently has just completed my studies during august. I have applied almost 30 companies on websites such as linkedin, glassdoor and jobstreet.
But so far almost more than 1 month only two of the companies did call me up for an interview but still got rejected in the end. The job i have applied are more towards IT support and administration
such as linux and windows as I have some knowledge towards it.

Company 1:
I did manage to answer most of the technical questions given by them during the interview and told me that will arrange for 2nd interview with the executive director.
After two weeks up to now still no news.

Company 2:
Call me up for phone interview yesterday, ask me some technical questions also told me will arrange for an interview today but suddenly got rejected this morning told me that there are a
change of job requirements and they are not hiring anymore.

Is it really normal for a fresh graduate to find it hard in securing for a job these days? As my expected starting salary is only RM2800 and its not even considered very high lol

computer science is probably the one graduate that can get the highest average salary and the jobs are abundant both in corporate or startup... you must be doing it wrong...

have you done any side project? learnt additional language or played with web/mobile development?

if you only did what the lecturer taught you and never even bother looking at other stuff and got mediocre score in college/uni... tough luck bro

Just join any it support. All you need to know is how to restart PC and reformat and shout "server down" to notify the whole office.

30 applications in 1 month is weak. Equal to 1 application per day.

When i was hunting jobs i applied 50 times per day. I remembered coz 50 applications is the limit set by jobstreet on how much can you apply per day.

You need to increase your efforst.

i wouldnt say high. salesman can get higher. but unlike salesman, you can part time with your skills. salesman nighttime no business. easily another 1.5-2k stacked on top.
also, looking for part timers too... need knowledge in react and elk stack tho, and already have potential people, just lacking these specific skillsets tongue.gif

Many company actually are not really hiring.
They just post the vacancy, they hire only when found a very suitable candidate.
If you interview time shown bossy/langsi attitude, then good luck. May that company looking for langsi guy.

Actually, look for jobs which fit your skillsets and your qualifications.

A lot of fresh grads just go into job-hunting without thinking off what they can do and what they want, which is literally one of the major reasons they fail the interview and couldn't impress the potential-employers.

I also found it rather futile to apply for overqualified posts because they pay lower than your expectations for sure and Malaysian employers always lowball 24/7/365.
I find it useful to ask what amount or range the employer is willing to pay and see is it what you want.
Sometimes you can nego but that's not the case for low-skilled jobs.

Finally, try harder unless you are only aiming for Big 4 or major huge firms and your grads and unis are top-tier. Send more applications and don't be afraid to go to the same company again.
And polish your resume, compare to the standard templates online and make sure yours are at least as good.

IT-related posts are in abundance in Malaysia so just don't give up.

rm2.8k is considered high
normally fresh grad salary for degree holder got offered way lower than that such as rm2k or even lower due to the job vacancy and job demand.

KL center IT fresh grad average 2.5k, if big cmpy or firm maybe can hit 2.8 - 3k, nowadays IT labor is cheap, ayam interview a fresh grad before then offer him 2.8k and he reject, end up ayam get another 2.5k fresh grad in, and he work happily coz i let him learn all he want and handover to him when i resign

*
IT graduates from what i understand very easy to secure a job.
my nephew from APU univ @ TPM got a job offer before he sit for exam
so i guess Which Univ you come from counts .

maybe also you are fresh , trying for first job... you need to convince them harder without doubt .
just keep applying to every IT Advert you see within your qualification. prepare to go for lower salary , cos with no exp you are in weak position.
good luck..

lousy tax structure, lousy gov support, lousy marketing and radicalization of malaysian society , as supported by TDM and his gang = foreign companies pulling out of malaysia as can be seen by weekly news of how sucky our stock exchange is (still) and how much money is being pulled out

sad thing is that no media dares to write about RnR issues affecting foreign investments ( requirements on hiring practices spooks them hard. even local companies are spooked a.f when reading them ) . Only say this pullback is caused by China-US trade war, but all our neighbors unnnntttuuunngg saja.

While I sympathize with you but you have to recognize these facts:

1. Tens of thousands of fresh graduates every year.
2. Thousands of graduates unemployed / underemployed / misemployed (e.g. Grab)
3. Not enough proper jobs
4. Country in middle of economic downturn.

Its the employers market now.

Every year I have a few hundred fresh grad applicants.

I wish I can hire all but I cant.

Some of them even beg me for an internship, with allowance as low as 400, as long as they don't have to sell nasilemak or remain unemployed.

I'm not saying you can't ask for RM2,800.

You can continue to try, no harm. Good luck!

Erm what do u understand by the meaning of IT support btw?
Support for what? Server? Cloud? 365? Web hosting? Those who r in support likee I mentioned above must hv a high technical skills in linux (centos, debian, ubuntu) win server up to v2019. Got cert can demand a bit.

My advice is if TS like to do support (consider shift) look for IT company, for sure u can learn alot.

About the gaji you can earn up to 3.3k-3.5k for freshgrad
If u are aiming for 2.8 sure can but during the negotiation the hiring manager will ask u once again and they might give u a new range according to their company's norm. It should be based on ur qualification, previous salary(kalau ada). Dah tambah allowance semua tu u boleh dpt 3.3-3.5k/month

But if TS like to do this jobscope 'provide support across the company' 2-2.5k lah kot.tambah lagi kalau IT equipment xbrp nak canggih. Many small company they wanna hire IT people but they still don't care about ur degree or wht so ever, your payment will still be 2k-2.2k(mostly) but many people just accept the job because they hv no choice aka terpaksa. If they can offer u 2.5k is consider ok.

Send je cv banyak2 ke beberapa companies (kecik/besar). U just graduated on August, 2019? Lol... Still early to say why so hard cari kerja. I didn't get any IT professional job for 6 months ya after graduated. I did part time sambil2 cari kerja. I went for interview for 8 times at that moment only 2 companies accepted me. Nothing is easy in this world. Do not give up easily.

U cakap u pandai linux kan try exabyte / serverfreak

Good luck

There are many people that can do IT support, not just people that come from IT background. That's how easy the field is.

You have to distinguish yourself somehow.

Learn Powershell, learn security stuffs, get cert, etc. Or better yet: learn another language.

Japanese, Korean IT support is in high demand.

Obviously you'd be competing with Japanese, Korean univ's grad, but they are quite small in number.

*
My thought when he said IT support/admin are those who help troubleshoot if any employees got trouble with their pc/laptop/video calls, raise access for new employees, setup work emails, answer technical-related enquiries, etc.

This job only deserve 2.6k for freshies

Meaning you need to explore more. Your definition of IT support/admin is IT helpdesk/service desk that responsible in employees' laptops, work email, printer and etc. There are other type of IT support from infrastructure e.g. Linux/windows server, network, data center, cloud platform to application support like front-end application (Apache,ISS), middleware (weblogic, MQ, webMethods), backend system like SAP/JDE/database

Not really normal as freshies usually quite easy to secure their first job provided the following:

1. Expected salary match with the market for that particular field (IT support basic usually lower but add up with allowance).

2. Academic results are good.

3. Your resume stand out and properly written/formatted.

4. Good spoken English and able to communicate f2f comfortably.

Some scenario that can contribute to your situation, just my assumption.

1. You never did market research for the salary (IT Support). You're asking same salary as someone with 1 year experience + etc.

2. Your academic result is just average but asking higher expected salary than peers with roughly the same result.

3. Your resume is messed up, tons of unneeded info + confusing format.

4. Not able to present yourself properly during phone/face to face. A lot of errrr ehhh, avoid eye contact etc.

I'm in IT field for years, do let me know if you need a second opinion on your resume. wink.gif Helping an IT junior, been there done that.

Job market is hard now.. ayam mau cari upgrade as moneyger nobody want to pay /k rate of 20K... 1 year searching liao.. So stick with shitty pay and lots of epf and leave, and DIY busyness for income. Funny thing of my current org perks - throw leave like water go out make money from makcik/pakcik.

2.8K is above market average, but if u damn good u can command up to 3.2K.. depends on demand, but market takes what it wants.. The sooner one understands supply and demand, pay, position etc all doesn't matter. If you can meet the demand, you get paid. Prablem is Marehsia needs Banggalas more than nerds (in its current economy state), and all that matters is make money and live off the poor, import all rich shiet. Deswai we never leave 3rd world for the past 30 years. Side effect of a long term disease - welcome to the 3rd world. If u can survive here, you'd make it anywhere else.. kot.

previously when i was a fresh grad, i drop my resume more than you, regardless career fair, online, post, u name it.
many many interview sessions but in the end, only one company accept me but only offer with 2k salary.

2k salary is very hard at that time. my home is very far at bangi(pama). and i need to work at sunway giza.
i need to travel, toll and pay my commitment as well. no savings at the end of the month.

not saying that you need to accept any lowball salary. but if you want to gain experience in IT and there is no other choice, then accept it.

sometimes, you just accept it for time being and hold on for few years. then jump to other company.

trust me. experience is everything. smile.gif

perhaps you should:

1. revised your expected salary (first job, dont be too demanding. after 1-2 years, bo raise. then jump ship if you want)
2. revised your CV. elaborate more on your capability/experience/involvement/projects etc willing to learn new task etc.
3. be open. if ure in IT and knows coding. dont limit ur self in 1 position/department. explore.

times r tough nowdays.
hard to find job. but once u strike one, dont be too demanding on the rate.
its the environment that matters.

btw, welcome to the working/salary men world.

Good luck!

I thought thousands of graduates unemployed.

It seems more than half million unemployed.

Malaysia gg already.

When i was hunting jobs i applied 50 times per day. I remembered coz 50 applications is the limit set by jobstreet on how much can you apply per day.

You need to increase your efforst.

what ar u? a degree? If fresh degree, if u go fr it support, Ur salary is to high bc u dont hve any experience. To get 2800 need at least 1y exp.

Im also a comp science holder. Yah its tough. My starting salary was 800 cash doing IT technician. After that, it getting better and better.

They want u to have some exp in IT first. Go find IT shop n try ur luck there.

It take me 3y exp in network, programming and troubleshooting to get the 2800 salary for degree holder in IT exec position.

From IT technician > Junior Network Eng > Software Eng > IT Exec. Of coz different company la. Lompat2.

After that, go to singapore. Use ur deg n exp. 2200$ monthly is ur for IT support.

Best of luck.
