IBKR is now trying to act like a market maker...

I can understand that they'll probably earn more by selectively buy/sell from their own inventory of shares... But what's the effect for me ya? So far I've only used Limit Order to buy/sell shares ..

Hi friends, just to share some info from my experiment:

I've set up recurring investment for VWRA, a LSE listed ETF denominated in USD.

Contrary to the information provided by IBKR:

1. If you don't have enough USD, it will convert from your other currency balances. This conversion is free.
2. It trades at the end of the trading day.
3. It charges minimal commission where possible. (0.35 USD instead of the usual 1.70+ USD) The ongoing theory is that it's an internal trade within IBKR where possible and it saves cost.

The cheapest route to invest at any amount now for me is:

1. Remit SGD to SG Bank. (MoneyMatch -> CIMB SG, <2 hour during working hours)
2. Deposit from SG Bank to IBKR SG (CIMB SG -> IBKR, <2 hour before funds are made tradable)
3. Set up recurring investment, it's possible to set to buy for exactly 1 time to mimic normal buying.
4. SGD automatically converted to USD without 2USD commission on trade with IBKR's great spot rate.
5. Trade is done at cheapest possible broker commissions.

Not only this makes weekly DCA viable, it also basically eliminates my minimum investment amount per trade. (Used to be RM3000+ for better rates on SunwayMoney and keeping TX cost at around 0.5%)
Obviously, if your stock has shit spread, do not do this. But this is a great boon for investors like me.

Question for bold: did you happen to have other currencies at hand? I wonder which ones they will take to auto convert...

Also, I've tried for VWRA and it complained that minimum trade amount is 10 (I assume that's number of shares). Strange because I see you have fractional share.... I wonder what I missed?

hello everyone, newbie here.

I have an IBKR account. I usually deposit USD using Wise after i convert them from myr.

My question is, let's say i wan to trade sg stocks, can i deposit sgd into IBKR and trade using sgd?

Or do I need to deposit USD as usual, and upon trading sg stocks, IB will auto convert USD to sgd?

thankssss
*
Yes you can deposit SGD directly - you'll need to change your account currency to SGD first, then deposit notification will be in SGD with the correct transfer instruction into IBKR's Singaporean account.

I will feel really out of place because I'm no longer very active in investment stuff, among other factors......... Lol sweat.gif IBKR's recurring investment is a godsend.

I let winners run in general.

I still don't understand after like 2 pages reading. Just making sure I'm on the same page... There's literally no difference in terms of the final outcome, do you agree?

Technically speaking, I GUESS it would have different unrealised profit vs realised profit on paper... But that's kinda meaningless, because if you REALLY want to pocket everything and close shop, they'll all still turn into realised profits, so I don't understand your insistence...

good thing Ramjade moved the reply here.

melondance actually the new Wise rates is cheaper if you moved bigger amounts of USD into IBKR

  • variable rate dropped from 0.6% to 0.5%

  • the fixed rate increased from $0.39 to $1.13

so if the amount u moved is small, you'll feel the pinch from the fixed rate. but if you increase, it'll be cushioned by the 0.1% discount

Comparison this morning...
to USD

to SGD

long story short, Wise loses by miles and MoneyMatch is the best for SGD for today's working day. Note: I checked using FPX rate on Wise, instead of Wise balance (that is a few bucks cheaper). I'm still holding some money from my travels so I can't do a full 20k transfer
Note: the column 45008 is only meant for Sunway Money where they offer more favourable rate at 45k and above (with RM8 fee)

Also for comparison, I checked rates last Saturday (sheets labelled 20240511):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DF1...#gid=1635374305

It's really annoying for me to do during office hours... but looking at these rates, oklah just delay my work a bit sweat.gif

Takudan wow you are back. i thought you abandoned the excel thumbup.gif

--edit--

someone asked me if moneymatch USD remittance was good a while ago. slightly disappointed to realise it's identical to wise (same as your finding)
*
Eh I never abandoned it sad.gif just that the Forex thread went dead, I also didn't see the need to bump...

QUOTE(bokbokchai @ May 13 2024, 01:55 PM)
one of the reason why i wanna use sunway money or moneymatch for funding usd into ibkr.. but unsure whther can transfer into wise usd or sgd account balance then move into ibkr. i do noted that IBKR still charge fee for transferring usd but it was very affordable like less than 1 usd

pic show i converted myr to usd into USD in wise then transfer to IBKR via wise and charges me the fee for the USD transfer.

Ah I never got to try direct USD funding from Wise yet, the only time I did and was successful was my leftover Euros from trip... There was no fee at all, so thanks for the info.

I personally continued with the SGD route as I compared the rates SGD vs USD and didn't see much difference ... Don't wanna trigger Wise compliance check because IIRC they mandate that you as sender, must send from an account of the same name -- SunwayMoney/MoneyMatch would be labelled otherwise, so they violate that rule. (Others please CMIIW)

I wish I'm a market mover biggrin.gif I got similar email today too. I checked the linked article is dated 3 May so unfortunately my post didn't change their mind... I like how they provide comparison tool and it's against the losers laugh.gif the ones where rates are so bad, I don't even want to spend time comparing them

Thank you. Yes, I'm currently using the Sunway Money, SG Bank method to fund IBKR.
But I also have USD bank account.

As @Takudan included USD view, I was wondering if she have the knowledge of the fees of receiving into a USD bank account and I can try the Sunway Money => USD account => IBKR method if it's cheaper.
*
Ahh, the only way I know of is via Wise.. you load money into Wise with USD, then using IBKR direct linkage with Wise (plus a bit of fee for USD), you can load USD into IBKR. This would've been a viable option if Wise was more competitive, but I learned after comparing that it is not, lol.

If you're doing this off business hours, it may be a different story because Wise seems consistent with their rates whereas the other 2 is much worse -- Wise was as good as SunwayMoney last Saturday.

Anyone suddenly getting all their trading permissions removed? The annual review came up and besides some unfilled fields in the Experience section, everything was as before. Hit Next and got a screen telling me I no longer qualify to trade: everything.

I'm pretty sick of IBKR. There'll be long moments of quiet where nothing happens and suddenly you have random bullshit like this or Compliance bugging you for documents and you have to do the tango, wasting everyone's time.
*
I got that too. You just have to input enough experience to qualify to trade the instruments smile.gif

It's not true that Moneymatch gives the best rate all the time. It's best to compare Sunway Money, Wise & Moneymatch rates by opening all 3 Google tabs simultaneously. That way, we can shop for the best rates.
*
You're right. I believe Ramjade's reply is intended to debunk the statement that "Wise is good". Personally, I work with this spreadsheet alongside my browser tabs and phone, which I copied from another forumer some time back, I also advertise on my signature tongue.gif

QUOTE

Lastly, the rates tend to be much better during working hours for both SunwayMoney and MoneyMatch, otherwise Wise is very competitive because it's relatively consistent at all times. And of course, my statement may become untrue in the future, for better or worse....
