That's why the paw pads must be tough and rough, so your pup will have stronger grip. Tough paw pads will lessen the risk of injury too.

Casper is also my first puppy. It doesnt matter if their paws get rough, it's meant to be and it also makes it stronger than those soft paws. Soft paws are more prone to being tear, bleed and pain.
From my house, I would bring my dog out and walk along the neighbourhood to the padang where people play football, mud, sand, grass and possibly ticks. I do this at least once a week.
Sure I can imagine how much you love your dog, I asked the same question about dog shoes too when I first brought Casper home but I realized that dogs are like us, humans, should be free to roam and walk and sniff about. Like nairud said, if you cannot even give them that and keep them locked up at home at all times, might as well be legless or better yet kill them.
You are a good owner if you can grant it some freedom. Have a little more confidence with yourself. Now it's only 2 months old so it's not advisable to bring it out but once your puppy has all his jabs, you should let him go out and see the world (Please keep him leashed at all times!)
Dont worry about getting hurt like walking on glass or nails. I am sure you are with him at all times, so you need to do your part and keep a lookout too! Afterall, dogs will usually sniff on the object first (regardless how small be it nail or glass) before it step onto it. A good owner always watch where their pup steps or eats. You should too!
I believe you are a good owner, just worry too much for the pup. I am sure you know what to do and I have faith in you because once I was exactly like you. You will do a good job, definitely!
Good reply

Added on August 9, 2007, 10:38 pmHahah... dunno you guys got hear before.... documentary on discovery channel quite long ago, about dogs being too pampered. Dogs are dogs, they need to walk on the floor shoeless, run around the grass and smell everything they want to smell. We need to let them act naturally. Carrying dogs in bags, especially the small breeds will make them think they are better than other dogs, which is why there are some dogs that are small but very aggressive towards other dogs. The pampering spoils their nature, resulting in a very spoiled dog... like a child becoming a spoiled brat lah.
Let your dog do what he or she wants to do.... walks, play fetch, roll around the grass.... that's all natural for dogs. But if it a habit like smelling and eating poo or chewing on rocks... then avoid this coz it is a bad habit that must be corrected.
Anyway, the last thing wanna say, no need to carry your dog everywhere. Let them roam freely on their 4 legs.
