QUOTE(Hean @ Aug 8 2007, 08:38 PM)
Hi all..I just got a puppy yesterday and its very small..only a few days old only I think since its eyes is still closed and its face features are not fully developed. I've a few questions to ask experts here since this is the 1st time I'm rearing a puppy this young.

1. Is milk the only food consumableby my puppy?
2. How often should I feed it?
3. It always suck on my fingers but when I feed it with milk, it refuse to eat. Is it hungry or it just wanna play?

I think that's all..might ask more soon..
*
Puppy milk... Never cows milk.... bad for them and can make puppies sick.

Every 2 hours since so small. You need to bottle feed. It will not lick from a bowl now.

Sucking your finger is a sign that it wants milk, not play. At this age, it will only eat and sleep and poo and pee.

Rub the belly with a damp warm cloth. Then take cotton balls or cotton facial pads, wet it in warm water and wipe the face, genitals and anal area. The belly rub stimulates digestion, mother dogs will lick the belly and face. Young puppies have no bladded control, so they need to be stimulated to defecate.... the wet cotton will do this part. Tissue can be harsh, so cotton is the best.

im jus afraid that he gets hurt la...i don think puppies would exactly know how to avoid dangerous things like nails or broken glasses rite...plus my padang isnt exactly the cleanest padang....

so when i go back on fridays i bring mikey to grooming there too...coz its on my way home as well...

That's why the paw pads must be tough and rough, so your pup will have stronger grip. Tough paw pads will lessen the risk of injury too.

QUOTE(Pennywise @ Aug 9 2007, 04:53 PM)
Casper is also my first puppy. It doesnt matter if their paws get rough, it's meant to be and it also makes it stronger than those soft paws. Soft paws are more prone to being tear, bleed and pain.

From my house, I would bring my dog out and walk along the neighbourhood to the padang where people play football, mud, sand, grass and possibly ticks. I do this at least once a week.

Sure I can imagine how much you love your dog, I asked the same question about dog shoes too when I first brought Casper home but I realized that dogs are like us, humans, should be free to roam and walk and sniff about. Like nairud said, if you cannot even give them that and keep them locked up at home at all times, might as well be legless or better yet kill them.

You are a good owner if you can grant it some freedom. Have a little more confidence with yourself. Now it's only 2 months old so it's not advisable to bring it out but once your puppy has all his jabs, you should let him go out and see the world (Please keep him leashed at all times!)

Dont worry about getting hurt like walking on glass or nails. I am sure you are with him at all times, so you need to do your part and keep a lookout too! Afterall, dogs will usually sniff on the object first (regardless how small be it nail or glass) before it step onto it. A good owner always watch where their pup steps or eats. You should too!

I believe you are a good owner, just worry too much for the pup. I am sure you know what to do and I have faith in you because once I was exactly like you. You will do a good job, definitely!

Added on August 9, 2007, 10:38 pmHahah... dunno you guys got hear before.... documentary on discovery channel quite long ago, about dogs being too pampered. Dogs are dogs, they need to walk on the floor shoeless, run around the grass and smell everything they want to smell. We need to let them act naturally. Carrying dogs in bags, especially the small breeds will make them think they are better than other dogs, which is why there are some dogs that are small but very aggressive towards other dogs. The pampering spoils their nature, resulting in a very spoiled dog... like a child becoming a spoiled brat lah.

Let your dog do what he or she wants to do.... walks, play fetch, roll around the grass.... that's all natural for dogs. But if it a habit like smelling and eating poo or chewing on rocks... then avoid this coz it is a bad habit that must be corrected.

Anyway, the last thing wanna say, no need to carry your dog everywhere. Let them roam freely on their 4 legs.

The spray is more effective at killing the ticks fast... I use it on lice and also mites on hedgehogs.... spot on is better for prevention than the spray. Another one would be Bayticol but very smelly.

The spray won't last.... each time you bath you must spray if you wanna use it as prevention.... or each time your dog gets wet, the chemical will wash off, most of it lah. Also, ticks can slowly become immune to the chemical one day. But I don't practice this.... I will only spray when my dogs have ticks.... I never use spot on at all but then all this is individual preference. Keep your dog clean, compound clean and feed healthy food, your dog won't get that many ticks. My dogs don't get ticks or fleas at all, house and garden is like tick free.

My area no stray dogs.... once the garden has no ticks, it will stay tick free. If notice got ticks, quickly use Bayticol to wash and spray around the house. My aunt who stays a few houses away, her dogs got ticks everytime coz she couldn't get rid of the ticks properly. She never spray and clean properly, also 2 of her dogs came from SPCA full of ticks....

or mayb can try tick shampoo?? but just becareful when washing the face area......

Tick shampoo is a good prevention too. Important to keep away from the face. There are some herbal ones, but some of these herbal shampoos do not work. I have one and it is like a waste of money LOL. Tea Tree oil often is used coz insects dislike tea tree oil.

Jog anytime also can.

Hun .. wud about tick collar ??
*
Tick collar is not effective.... the most is that the collar is coated with a chemical that won't last. You may see effects in 1 or 2 weeks, then later nothing.... the collar is too close to the face, making the dog inhale the chemical. Some dogs are allergic, I heard only lah.

Anyway, now all the spot-on and sprays available, it is really convenient. Last time my dad would use flea powder which is quite dangerous if it gets into the eyes or inhaled. Another method is crushing moth balls into powder and wipe into the fur or bath the dog in Petrol or Kerosene. Really pityful if use those.... the dog will have wounds on the body coz the petrol or kerosene eat into the skin and the dog will be very smelly for weeks....

because thats how dog identify each other by sniffing each other butt...its like finger print...ur personality and etc is all store in scent...and they esp love to smell if gals having period ... through most of our dogs are pet dog and tame its their wild side that still kicks in....
*
Spot on thumbup.gif Dogs normally get to know animals or people by smelly each other's butt and private areas. This is where the signature scent is the strongest. They can smell where you have been, did another dog smell you before or not, how old are you and are you female or male. Females have a different scent because we get periods and female dogs have heat. Sometimes not in heat also, the male dogs will become very hyper and try to hump.... this is not really wanting to breed, is more like showing off that he is dominant and is the best one to breed with hahahah.... it's like us humans, we tend to choose guys that can provide us a happy life but for dogs, they don't have such emotions lah so the behaviour is likely to show if the mate is suitable or not.

Well, if you do not want your dog to sniff you, then always scold or give something unpleasant whenever you catch your dog doing such behaviour.... but never avoid your dog from sniffing other dogs coz that is their natural behaviour to say "hi".

The pepper thing is not sprinkle abit lah. Is pour till the whole poo or object is fully covered. Also, black pepper is not potent enough for sneezing, white pepper powder is. The McD pepper would never work.

Hahah... coz if you just sprinkle abit, it's just like some extra seasoning, and black pepper is not as spicy as white pepper.... I poured a whole packet of white pepper on my rabbit's grave last time, my dogs don't dare touch for months.

QUOTE(won @ Aug 22 2007, 03:46 PM)
Erm, I have some question to ask on food for my dog.  unsure.gif

I am thinking of preparing homecooked food for my dog, not all the time but maybe a few days a week, so he will still get his daily kibbles.
Usually, I will boil chicken meat with some vegetables like carrot, celery, brocolli and potatoes, about 50-50.
Sometimes, I also gave him a hard boiled egg. I am not feeding him raw (BARF).
Is this meal ok/complete enough for him?
Should I also add some yogurt or other supplements? Someone recommended me to add flaxseed oil to boost his immune system.
Any advice / suggestions? Thanks!  smile.gif
*
You should include some internal organs..... pigs heart and chicken liver are great supplements to a meal. Of course you just put a bit, not the whole pigs heart since the hear is quite big. But you can use chicken hearts as well. You can include half a clove of garlic into the food.

Flaxseed oil is a great source of Vitamin E, helps with the skin and also promotes a good heart. Give the coat a shine too after taking it for some time. Never add salt or sugar or any other seasonings to home cooked food.

Boiled eggs are good. As for the vegetables, it is better not to cook them for it cooks away the nutrients. If you still insist on cooking the vegies, then you should only dip them in boiling water for 20 seconds.... never over cook. It is also better to blend everything in a blender till it becomes a puree as it helps with adsorption of the nutrients.

If you still feed kibbles to your dog, then there is no need for vitamin supplements as too much vitamins can cause more damage to a dog. You can give 1 spoon of yogurt into your dog's meal. It promotes a good gut but too much can cause diarrhea.

about when can we start feeding our furkids these type of food diet ar??..
*
Well... it is better to feed homecooked diets after 1 year old.... but this is my way lah coz quality dog kibbles has all the nutrients for a healthy and proper growth.... I still stick to kibbles coz sometimes such home cooked food can cause a dog to become picky and this can lead to an unhealthy habit.

Yogurt is ok, just 1 teaspoon a day is good enough.
