EDIT June 23 2020

So I got the Decathlon rack in post #2 and have been using it for a while now.
I would really like a second bar holder but decathlon doesnt sell this separately.

Anyone know where I can get another set? I am comfortable with buying from Taobao if needed.
Purpose is so that I dont need to unrack the bar, swap the position of the holder and re-rack.

This is what I'm looking for:

Original post:

Here is what I'd like to have in my gym

1. Squat rack
2. Bench
3. 1 full length oly bar (86")
4. One set of weights
5. 3m x 3m floor padding

For those that have home gyms, could you advise me on the following

1. Place in klang valley or seremban/nilai area that has sample equipment that I can see for myself. Most sport stores only have catalogs

2. Pros and cons of your setup.

They have loads of stuffs.
But if you're able to ship stuff from China, you can find the equipment they sell. Of course no warranty, once purchase, you're on your own to talk to the merchant if your item damaged or missing.

https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=559672260241

Things you might missed, could be not a big deal
1. Squat rack hole that fits your needs. China rack tends to not have many hole near the height where you rack your bar for bench press like expensive rack does
user posted image

2. Rack width and pole diameter
China rack tends to be slimmer, like 1.5" than standard 2" where can you find alot of accessories from 3rd party vendor,

3. Bar weight
Not all bar is weighted 20kg.

4. Bench height (could be big deal for you cant lay your feet properly)

5. Bench stability. Good bench is very expensive. I still prefer the one I build with wood.

I'll consider if the price is right.

Do you know where I can get a mini barbell jack?

You can get agent to buy for you, look at service noticeboard section. Or ezbuy.
For heavy item, remember to use ocean freight which takes about a month to reach.

I also just gotten my stuff from savage gears. HQ here (https://goo.gl/maps/sLfMUWXNkQBL847r6) you may walk in for a try. I can PM you the guy in charge of sales if you keen. Their barbells are more professionally made, two variants. One for training use, RM5xx, another for amateur profession at RM8xx.

I am using the bump-plates, which is very friendly to condo tiles.

IMO, for home use, try these silicone wedges instead. Even more convenient to use and store.

I prefer the jack because it props the bar up when changing the last plate.

Do you have a bench?

I mostly have everything I need except a decent bench and those jacks.

I checked out their site and saw they listed a bench at RM2100 and that's a bit too much for me right now.

Time to look into doing bench presses with a yoga ball.

I would suggest you to do floor press instead of doing it with yoga ball, the instability (thou give you slight core muscle exercise benefits that can be replaced by other safer options) are pairing with greater risk of injury.

Just use another plates to "alas" the weight plate and slide under the bar for floor press. biggrin.gif

Oh ya, no bench for me ATM, out of budget already....hahaha!

Target next year to get a flat bench (as light/simple as possible to move around) + a proper workout cage. (squat, bench press, dip, pull up....etc..)

Floor bench presses full ROM is up to the plates or elbows touch the ground right?

Feels weird that the bar wont touch the chest.

I shared your concern too, if you are still having access to gym, you may use the flat bench press to do a full ROM to perform press. Then home gym setup would be an assist to improve the performance of press by focusing on tricep activation + upper pectoral muscle, hence I will suggest a close-grip bench press with elbow touching ground. (close-grip means grip at shoulder length, not gripping palm next to each other, that one also prone to injury.)

Technically, with stronger tricep, with correct volume training in systematic ways, it will improve your bench press performance.

Side note: May be you can adopt GVT - German Volume Training 10x10@60%1RM .

hope this helps...

A day: Chest And Back (Can do at home with Barbell setup)
Set 1: Barbell Bench Press - Close/Medium Grip - 10 sets, 10 reps (90 seconds rest)
Set 2: Bent Over Barbell Row - 10 sets, 10 reps (90 seconds rest)
Set 3: Chin-up - 3 sets, 10 reps (60-90 seconds rest)
(for upgrade, beside adding weights, you can do incline bench press for Set 1, or change Chin-up into Pull-up.)

Note: With 1-2 days apart between A and B day.

B day: Legs And Abs (You may do this at gym to utilize the relevant machines)
Set 1: Barbell Squat - 10 sets, 10 reps (90 seconds rest)
Set 2: Lying Leg Curls - 10 sets, 10 reps (90 seconds rest)
Set 3: Seated Calf Raise - 3 sets, 10 reps (60 seconds rest)
Set 4: Hanging Leg Raise - 3 sets, 10 reps (60-90 seconds rest)

Take note on the rest timing, I use my phone to record the rest time, strict or not strict depends on the stamina and form that day. Be adaptable to your own body's limits. biggrin.gif

yeah, i visited the gym before the purchase done. It let you try all the equipment around before you wish to keep some at home.

Or if you stay near to Cheras area, I can recommend "Muscle Camp Gym" too, 24 hours. (RM15 per entry, or RM68 per month).

Both are fine for me, depends which area I'm in when i visit KL. rclxms.gif

Safety > everything
Instability prevents you from loading more weight, which defeats your lifting purpose.

Not TS, regarding dumbbells, I see that many people love to buy a dumbbell rack for their home gym and then have fixed dumbbells for each weight.

If space is a concern, is it better to buy a adjustable rubber dumbbell? And probably cheaper? I only have to waste a bit of time by removing the rubber plate.

You could get something like this

https://s.lazada.com.my/s.1eAK2

It has a knob at both ends that you can adjust to select your preferred weight before you lift. After you're done, you just slot it in.

The cons of this is that you're limited in the weight vs swapping out rubber plates and that the mechanical parts may fail over time though thats more common in a gym because you have multiple users who don't really care about handling the weight properly. For own use, it will last you a while.

I dont have this or any dumbell, but I'd say that this is a decent deal especially if you get a pair.

There are much more expensive ones like the model thats at fitness concept showroom retails for RM2k if I'm not mistaken.

The difference between this and the expensive ones are the mechanical parts and an optional stand. If you use the discounted one enough that it breaks over time, I'd say that justifies spending a little bit more for a different model later.

i'm one of those who prefer the basics for dumbell, i have the space (a 850cm x 850cm~) room specifically for gym eq's, so i opted to get a dumbell rack just because it completes the "look".

But if space is a concern, i still will stick to those basic hex-dumbell, fixed dumbell, because i tend to drop/be rough with the dumbells - but don't get too many, maybe just 3-4 within your weight range, and don't get a rack, just stack them on the floor.

To me, weightlifting should be kept simple, and i find bowflex type dumbell adds unnecessary complication, just get me a some fixed db, a simple powercage without fancy attachments, an eleiko bar, and any china-brand oly plate and i'm golden.

some might say it's small (ie. internal depth is around 50 - 55cm only, and width is smaller then most commercial gym power racks), but i find that "smallness" kept my form in check, hell you wouldn't need to be stepping back more then 1 step after unracking the barbell for squats anyway, and your bar path for most lifts are usually vertical anyway so there's no point in have so much real estate inside a cage when most of the time the emphasis of weightlifting is solid, stable, immovable base- unless you're >6ft, 100kg above - then look elsewhere.

i can do ohp/squat/deadlift (lazy move the barbell outside lah, way easier to slide out the safeties only)/flat&incline bench/rows/chinup&pullups all with this small cage

If you can do the OHP inside the rack, that's a plus.

I cant do the same in the decathlon unit I bought, it would clash with the upper frame.

Yeap - just barely, if i were to wear squat shoes and OHP in it, it'll touch.

If it's someone 6ft+ confirm cannot, the rack is 230cm in height - and i tested it on their showroom before i bought it

hi all,

I am planning to add this bench to my home gym as the only thing possible for my leg workouts currently are just squats which can be quite fatiguing. Just wondering if anyone has tried this kind of bench before or any opinions on it.

Actually I didnt buy this dumbbell.

I bought the normal adjustable dumbbell where I have to rotate the collars at both sides to change weight
*
I think if buy the adjustable dumbell with the spinning collars is much cheaper than the Bowflex type of dumbells right?

Just not sure if the bar itself can handle up to 30kg and above without breaking, if we buy the cheap kind of dumbell from Lazada or other place

Yea. Definitely cheaper than Bowflex but since I only use it up to 10kg only so I can't tell if 30kg will work or not

The quality is not bad, I mainly use it for the extension feature, the preacher curl and leg curl feature are subpar. But for its price it is pretty worth it.

Any bros have a home gym in condo?

My condo gym closed more than a year now and don't really have good equipments for compound movements so I'm thinking of getting a power rack from savage gear, but not sure if the tiles or floor loading can handle the weight. I worry if over time, the weight will cause the floor to sunken.

Used to squat heavy almost daily at external gym but with Covid, all closed and I really miss it. unsure.gif

Any bros can share tips/experience? Thanks in advance.

My quick recommendation would be to invest in mats as opposed to having the weights be installed directly on tiles. I routinely check mine on a quarterly basis and use a level to check if my house floor is bowing.

Thanks for replying boss.

Yup, definitely will get mats or else neighbor below sure will complain whenever I'm re-racking.

How long have you had your gym setup boss? Also, is it safer if I place it near beams?

I've had the rack for about 1.5 years now and just added a treadmill in sep 2020. I see no harm in putting it near beams but it might not be necessary

rack only is around 2k i think, i got the xmas promo, include barbell, plates, rubbermat 100cm x 100cm

at first i was checking out the eleiko set since it's a lifelong investment, 16k for rack, 3k for bar, 10k set of plates, but once i bought the savage gear ones, it's already good enough for me with no intention to upgrade already.

Zealfit, Azmir will handle all the importing procedure for you. I heard recently he spent quite a huge chunk of his own money to import a huge batch of commonly bought stuffs so customers don't have to wait 3-5 months for the import procedure.

I checked out their site and saw they listed a bench at RM2100 and that's a bit too much for me right now.

Time to look into doing bench presses with a yoga ball.
