At Least 26 Killed as Indonesia’s Papua Rocked by Violence

At least 26 people were killed and dozens injured as fresh clashes erupted in Indonesia’s restive Papua region, according to military and police officials.

Protesters clashed with police and military in the cities of Jayapura and Wamena on Monday after a hoax about a student being racially abused went viral on the social media, according to Papua police spokesman Ahmad Musthofa Kamal. Twenty two of those killed were in Wamena alone, a city in the Papua mountain region. The clashes also left 72 people injured, and dozens of vehicles, houses and government buildings were torched in the day-long rioting, he said in a statement.

The resource-rich Papua region was rocked by separatist protests last month, forcing authorities to deploy additional troops to quell the violence that targeted government buildings and the army. The region is home to Grasberg copper and gold mine, operated by Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and the Tangguh LNG project run by BP Plc.

IS radical stabs ex-Indonesian army chief Wiranto

JAKARTA (AFP): An attacker allegedly “exposed to IS radicalism” stabbed Indonesian security minister Wiranto as he was stepping out of a vehicle today, leaving two deep wounds, police said.

“Someone approached and attacked him. The local police chief and Pak (Mr) Wiranto were injured, ” National Police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said of the attack in Pandeglang on Java island, adding that a man and a woman had been arrested.

Television images showed security officers wrestling the couple to the ground outside a local university after the attack on the 72-year-old Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Berkah Hospital spokesman Firmansyah said the former military general suffered “two deep wounds”, but was conscious and in stable condition, adding that he would be rushed to the capital Jakarta and may need surgery. - AFP

Police in Indonesia's Papua to investigate alleged killings

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Police in Indonesia's restive Papua region pledged on Friday to hold an investigation after a local leader said the bodies of five villagers had been found with bullet wounds in an area where there has been a military crackdown.

The village is in the mountainous Nduga area, where the military has been hunting separatist rebels since December, following the killings of 16 construction workers building a highway.

Samuel Tabuni, an Nduga youth leader, said by telephone that villagers suspected the five - three women, a teenage boy and a teenage girl - had been shot by the military. He said the five, whose bodies were found buried under mud and leaves, had been missing since they were out collecting food on Sept. 20.

Papua police spokesman Ahmad Kamal said no reports of missing persons or deaths had been filed, but officers would begin to collect information about the alleged killings.

"We will still begin a process to find out whether there were murders or whether the incident really happened. We hope family members will report to police in Nduga so we can follow up," Kamal said by telephone.

Papua military spokesman Eko Daryanto also said the families of the victims should report the deaths to authorities so that an investigation could be carried out, adding he regretted that the accusation had been made before there was proof.

The Free Papua Movement's military arm, which claimed responsibility for killing the construction workers, also blamed the Indonesian military in a posting on the group's Facebook page.

Some 40% of the estimated 100,000 Nduga population had been internally displaced since violence flared in December, Nduga said. He called on Jakarta to withdraw troops from Nduga, while also asking for support from the international community.

"Many thousands of people in Nduga have already fled because of the threat of being killed," he said. "This is their home, this is where they live - it is the army that needs to leave, not the people who live here."

There has been a spike in violence since August in Papua, which encompasses Indonesia's two easternmost provinces on the island of New Guinea. Papua was a Dutch colony before it was incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 after a widely criticised U.N.-backed referendum.

President Joko Widodo recently said he was open to holding talks with Papuan separatists to end the unrest, a departure from the stance of previous governments and some of his cabinet ministers.

Wiranto stable after attack

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s Chief Security Minister Wiranto is conscious and in stable condition after he was stabbed by a man authorities suspect had been radicalised by Islamic State ideology, police said.

Television footage showed the minister slump to the ground beside his car after the attack yesterday in Pandeglang in Banten province, west of the capital on the island of Java.

“His condition is stable and at the moment he is being evacuated to a hospital in Jakarta, ” Tomsi Tohir, Banten police chief, told Metro TV.

A police photograph showed the minister, a former general, being carried on a stretcher into a nearby hospital.

The minister had suffered two wounds to his stomach, according to Firmansyah, director of the Berkah Hospital.

Police had arrested a man and a woman they suspected were a couple and seized sharp weapons they were carrying, including knives and a pair of scissors, said Tomsi.

Officials say at least 15 killed in attack in Thailand's restive south

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Suspected separatist insurgents killed at least 15 and wounded four village defence volunteers in a late-night shooting at a security checkpoint in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, security officials said on Wednesday.

The attackers in southern Yala province also used explosives and scattered nails on roads to delay pursuers late on Tuesday night in what authorities described as the biggest gun attack in years.

"This is likely the work of the insurgents," Colonel Pramote Prom-in, a regional security spokesman, told Reuters.

"This is one of the biggest attack in recent times," he said.

A decade-old separatist insurgency in predominantly Buddhist Thailand's largely ethnic Malay-Muslim provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat has killed nearly 7,000 people since 2004, according to Deep South Watch, which monitors the violence.

There was no claim of responsibility, as is common with attacks in Thailand's deep south.

Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat were part of an independent Malay Muslim sultanate before Thailand annexed them in 1909.

Some rebel groups in the south have said they are fighting to establish an independent state.

Philippine army says it thwarted a suicide bombing in town in restive south

MANILA (Reuters) - Soldiers in the southern Philippines foiled what the army said on Wednesday was an attempted suicide bombing in an urban area, the latest in a series of attacks blamed on a group aligned with Islamic State.

Troops manning a checkpoint on the island of Jolo engaged in a short gunfight with three men on a motorcycle late on Tuesday afternoon. The attackers were killed and bomb vests, a handgun, a grenade and detonators were seized, the military said.

The intended target was an urban area of Jolo, the island's capital, and two of the men were Egyptian, the regional armed forces command said in a statement.

The other man was Filipino and a member of Abu Sayyaf, a group that has pledged allegiance to Islamic State and is notorious for piracy and for kidnapping foreigners.

The incident would have been be the fifth attempted suicide bombing in the southern Philippines in the past 16 months. Such attacks were previously unheard of despite decades of separatist unrest and lawlessness that has given rise to Islamist sentiments.

It marked a sinister turn in the Philippines' fight to contain militant groups inspired by Islamic State who have been joined by fighters from Malaysia and Indonesia, including in a brazen attack and five-month occupation of Marawi City in 2017.

The suicide attacks were all in the Sulu archipelago, Abu Sayyaf's stronghold, and were all claimed by Islamic State.

They included a twin bombing of a church in January that killed 21 people, a van bomb at a checkpoint in July 2018 that killed 11, a suicide attack by two youths that killed eight in June, and a woman who prematurely detonated a bomb she was carrying near an army detachment in September.

The attackers included Indonesians, a Moroccan and Filipinos.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to wipe out Abu Sayyaf and has intensified military operations in its strongholds, although bombings targeting civilians and military have continued unabated.

Two suspected terrorists killed, one policeman injured in exchange of fire in North Sumatra

Two suspected terrorists were shot dead while one member of the National Police’s Densus 88 counterterrorism squad was injured in an exchange of gunfire in Datar city, Hamparan Perak district, Deli Serdang regency in North Sumatra on Saturday.

The two alleged terrorists, as yet unidentified, died after being shot by Densus 88 officers. Their bodies have been taken to the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Medan.

North Sumatra Police chief Ins. Gen. Agus Andrianto said the exchange of fire took place when a team of Densus 88 officers were searching a location suspected to be the hiding place of alleged terrorists following a suicide bombing attack against the Medan Police headquarters on Wednesday. The attack killed the bomber and injured six people.

Agus said police conducted raids on several locations, one of which was the site of the shoot-out in Datar city.

“An exchange of fire broke out in the location between a group of alleged terrorists and members of Densus 88. Two alleged terrorists died,” he said on Saturday.

Besides the two who died, the squad also arrested three others they accuse of being terrorists in Aceh province.

Agus said that members of Densus 88 and the North Sumatra Police were still hunting for more members of the group behind the suicide bombing.

Because of their investigation, police had apprehended several people, along with raw materials for explosives, during raids on several locations.

“Since the incident at the Medan Police headquarters, we have so far arrested 14 people, nine of whom could be named suspects. We also found low-explosive bomb materials,” Agus added. (rin)

US to provide another coast guard cutter to Vietnam in order to boost its capabilities against China

Vietnam Coast Guard Ship CSB 8020, formerly the Hamilton-class Cutter USCGS Morgenthau

The United States announced it will provide Vietnam with another coast guard cutter for its growing fleet of ships, boosting Hanoi’s ability to patrol the South China Sea amid tensions with China.

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper disclosed the decision during an address in Vietnam, which has emerged as the most vocal opponent in Asia of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.

In his speech, Esper took aim at China, which he accused of “bullying” neighbours, like Vietnam.

“China’s unilateral efforts to assert illegitimate maritime claims threaten other nations’ access to vital natural resources, undermine the stability of regional energy markets, and increase the risk of conflict, ” Esper told students at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

The vessel will be Vietnam’s second cutter from the US Coast Guard, which just two years ago transferred a Hamilton-class cutter to Vietnam. By providing the ships, the US hopes to enable Vietnam to assert its sovereignty and deter China.

More than four decades after the Vietnam War ended, ties between the United States and Vietnam are increasingly focused on shared concerns over Chinese expansion.

China claims 90% of the potentially energy-rich South China Sea, but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also lay claim to parts of it, through which about US$3 trillion (RM12.45 trillion) of trade passes each year.

Beijing in July sent a ship for a months-long seismic survey to an area internationally designated as Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) but also claimed by China.

Vietnam said earlier this month it could explore legal action in the dispute, a move previously taken by the Philippines – where Esper visited earlier this week.

In 2016, the Philippines won a ruling from the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague that invalidated China’s claim over most of the South China Sea.

Speaking earlier at Vietnam’s defence ministry, Esper said the international rules-based order “has come under duress”.

“Collectively, we must stand up against coercion and intimidation, protect the rights of all nations, big and small, ” Esper said.

The United States accuses China of militarising the South China Sea and trying to intimidate Asian neighbours who might want to exploit its extensive oil and gas reserves.

In April, the United States delivered six patrol boats worth $12 million to Vietnam’s Coast Guard. Those vessels were in addition to another twelve “Metal Shark” patrol boats it provided to Vietnam in the last two years. — Reuters

2 soldiers injured in blast at National Monument park in central Jakarta

JAKARTA - Two Indonesian soldiers were injured after a blast occurred at the National Monument park, near the presidential palace in central Jakarta, police said on Tuesday (Dec 3).

A presidential spokesman said that President Joko Widodo was not in the palace at the time.

"Initial findings from our investigation... found that the explosion was caused by a smoke grenade," Jakarta police chief Gatot Eddy Pramono told a news conference, which was televised live.

"We are investigating why there was a grenade there. We did not find anything else after combing the area," he added.

Inspector-General Gatot said that the two soldiers are now being treated at an army hospital in Jakarta. One was injured on both hands, while the other was injured in his leg.

Explaining the chronology of events, Jakarta military chief Eko Margiyono said the two soldiers were going through their morning exercise routine when they spotted a suspicious-looking object.

"One of the soldiers held the grenade with his left hand, injuring the left hand quite badly. They are conscious and being treated in hospital," he added.

second shooting spree at us base this week

QUOTE
A Saudi national is the suspected gunman in deadly shooting at Pensacola Naval Air Station, sources say

(CNN)For the second time this week, a deadly shooting unfolded at a US Navy base Friday when a gunman killed at least three people and injured several others at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida.

The suspected shooter, who was also killed, was a member of the Saudi Arabian military training at the station, according to five US defense officials and another person familiar with the investigation.
Investigators are looking into whether the shooting was terror-related as a possible motive, but it's still early in the investigation.
CNN has reached out to the Saudi Embassy in the US and has not heard back.
The shooter was killed after two deputies exchanged gunfire with him, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan told reporters in a news conference.
FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES
The FBI has taken over the investigation, according to an FBI spokeswoman.
Eight people were taken to Baptist Health Care, including one who died, said Chief Deputy Chip Simmons. The deputies who confronted the shooter also suffered gunshot wounds -- one in the arm and one in the knee. Both are expected to survive.
The shooting occurred in a classroom building, Commanding Officer of NAS Pensacola Capt. Tim Kinsella said. The base will remain on lockdown until further notice, he said.

The names of the victims are not being released until authorities notify their families.
Walking through the scene "was like being on the set of a movie," Morgan said.
"This doesn't happen in Escambia County. It doesn't happen in Pensacola. It doesn't happen to our friends and neighbors who are members of the US Navy," Morgan said. "But it did, and it has."
The shooting comes just two days after an active duty US sailor, Gabriel Romero, killed two civilian employees and injured another before killing himself at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii. Investigators have not announced a motive for the Wednesday shooting.
