Syrian Rebel have air support?

I don't know about that.

Air support doesn't always mean dropping bombs from a plane/drone. Even a small drone equipped with camera for battlefield reconnaissance is also considered a very good form of air support already.

Current TLDM camo still look like crap on shore operations though, conceal nothing also. But good thing don't use 'baju pejabat' anymore, but improve about 30% only. laugh.gif

Even US Navy will no longer use the blue working uniforms anymore, now changed to a green digital-pattern camo used by SEALS.

The U.S. Navy officially ended its blue camouflage uniforms on Oct. 1 and switched to a green camouflage already worn in Navy SEAL and explosive ordnance disposal units.

The U.S. Navy implemented the blue camouflage —often referred to as “blueberries”— in 2008, but it has been eyeing a change since 2016 to adopt the green pattern of its expeditionary units as a universal pattern for all of its service members, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

To note, the US Coast Guard also uses this same camo.

MMEA TO LAUNCH NEW ASSETS SOON

user posted image
MMEA's OPV patrol vessel, to be named KM Kota Bharu

In a recent media interview, the MMEA DG stated that it will received its first OPV later this year. What was not said however that the project was delayed as the government (previous one) had delayed the progress payment for the three ships built by the THHE-Destini JV.

Destini revealed the delay in its 2019 annual report made public last week.

From the annual report: "Destini’s marine manufacturing business is divided into the manufacturing of para-military vessels and lifeboats. Lower revenue for this business segment under para-military vessels was due to the completion of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (“MMEA”)New Generation Patrol Craft hence there were no more contributions from the fabrication of this vessels. Meanwhile, the Group saw a slower progress in building the MMEA’s Offshore Patrol Vessel due to delays in payment disbursement by the Government as planned. Budget constrains from MMEA is also reflected on our lower margins for ship repair services for its vessels."

It must be noted that the last two NGPC – KM Tok Bali and KM Kinabalu – will be officially handed over to MMEA tomorrow at Destine Marine Shipyard facility in Port Klang. The delay in handing over of the two ships were due bureaucratic red tape during the last 24 months as the previous government transferred the MMEA to the Home Ministry from the Prime Minister’s Department. The ships had been ready for delivery for at least 18 months already.

Also, in a related matter, The MMEA plans to acquire up to eight OPVs and 14 NGPCs as part of its capitalisation programme, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said today. However plans for the new ships will depend on the funding by the government, with the requirements will be discussed with the Finance Ministry and announced when it was appropriate.

The design and shipyards for new OPVs and NGPCs will not necessarily be the current ones – THHE-Destini JV and Destini – he said without the explaining further.

The two projects will be the main project for the MMEA in the near future apart from the three Multi Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) already approved for funding for approval for the next RMK. MPSS will act as a mother ship for at least six interceptor boats allowing them to stay at sea for a longer period of time.

The minister did not explained the delay in the delivery of the NGPC – work on Tok Bali, Kota Kinabalu and Lahad Datu were completed late 2018. It is understood that the contract and those of the OPV were placed under scrutiny by the previous government. It is also interesting to note that the current PM was the Home Minister during the last 22 months prior to his elevation to the current post.

Hamzah and delegation also visited THHE Fabricators at Pulau Indah nearby to check on the progress of the OPV project. Hamzah said the first OPV is expected to be handed over to the MMEA this October with the other two ships expected next year. It is likely the first OPV will only be launch this October with commissioning expected in the first quarter of next year.

Like other projects, the work at the THHE yard was only resumed early this month after being shut down due to the lockdown ordered by the government to prevent the spread of Covid 19. Work also slowed down since mid-2018 as the then government put a brake on progress payment.

New NGPC ships to be stationed in the South China Sea zone

user posted image
Home minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin inspecting the NGPC during the handover ceremony, also MMEA new digital camo!

One of two new generation patrol craft (NGPC) received by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) today will be located in Kuching, Sarawak.

Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, who told that the vessels were for strengthening the agency’s surveillance activities in the Malaysian Maritime Zone (MMZ), said the one for Kuching was ‘Kapal Maritime’ (KM) Kota Kinabalu while KM Tok Bali will be located in Tok Bali, Kelantan.

Hamzah said both vessels would focus on combating encroachments by foreign fishing boats in the national territorial waters, especially in the South China Sea.

“The encroachment of foreign fishing boats is a critical threat to the national fisheries industry. It not only robs the nation of revenue from marine resources but also undermines local fishermen’s income.

“It also harms the marine bio-diversity eco-system in the country’s waters,” he told a news conference after seeing the handover of the two NGPC from Destination Marine Services Sdn Bhd, the local company that built the assets for MMEA, here, today.

In addition, Hamzah said his ministry was also working to acquire a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) or a mother ship equipped with high-tech equipment capable of carrying six units of fast interceptor craft and UAV.

“With this kind of asset capabilities, I am confident in the near future MMEA will be on par with international maritime agencies.

“As the leading agency in protecting the country’s waters, MMEA will be strengthened from time to time with the acquisition of new assets equipped with various high-tech facilities,” he said. – Bernama

MMEA eyes Langkawi's Kubang Badak as a forward base to monitor northern part of the straits of Malacca

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) has identified a location in Kubang Badak here to be used as a forward base to monitor and control the northern waters of the island, said its Director General, Maritime Admiral Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som.

He said the base at the location would improve the monitoring and control capabilities of the country's waters including preventing encroachment by illegal immigrants (PATI).

"Before the Rohingya and COVID-19 issues arose recently, in fact, MMEA has identified a location in Kubang Badak that will be used as a forward base.

MMEA plans to place two boats and 12 members at the location, this forward base will provide a quick response time in the event of any incident such as criminal activities or rescue efforts compared to now we need to make a long trip to the northern waters of Langkawi, "he said. he said in a press conference here, today.

He said this when asked to comment on a series of encroachments by Rohingya ethnic illegal immigrants through the northern waters of Langkawi that occurred previously.

Earlier, Mohd Zubil attended the Kedah and Perlis Maritime Directorate Offices here today.

USS Bonhomme Richard explodes and burns at San Diego Naval Station, 21 sent to hospital as firefigthing efforts continue

user posted image

A fire that broke out Sunday morning in amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) sent 17 sailors and four civilian workers to local hospitals, Naval Surface Force Pacific officials said.

Billowing clouds of white and black smoke poured into the clear, blue sky throughout the morning as local and federal fire and rescue crews responded to the multiple-alarm fire aboard the gray hull, berthed at Pier 2 at Naval Base San Diego. By late afternoon, fire boats continued to pour water onto the ship at Naval Base San Diego in a futile effort to stem the smoke and quash the fires still burning on the 844-foot-long ship, which was going through a maintenance period.

“Seventeen sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital,” Mike Raney, a SURFPAC spokesman, said in an afternoon statement that updated a previous report of 18 injured sailors. “All inport ships have been contacted and directed to provide fire parties to possibly assist with firefighting efforts.” All personnel were accounted for, officials reported.

In its latest whitepaper, Japan has discussed its impending acquisition of F-35B fighter jets and highlighted efforts by regional militaries to expand their influence and activities despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The full document, released July 14 in Japanese, contains a section on the short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing variant of the Lockheed Martin aircraft, noting that with regional countries making “remarkable progress” in air power modernization, the country needed to respond in kind..

The whitepaper highlighted the operational flexibility of the F-35B, noting the jet’s ability to operate without the need for long runways, which would enable the Japan Air Self-Defense Force to significantly expand the number of locations from whence the service can conduct air superiority operations.

The whitepaper noted there are currently 20 airports and air bases throughout Japan that have runways sufficiently long enough to support JASDF air superiority operations. Operating the F-35B would theoretically allow the JASDF to expand that number to 45, which would include some of the runways on Japan’s far-flung southern islands.

Japan has plans to eventually acquire 42 F-35Bs to operate alongside its planned fleet of 105 conventional-takeoff-and-landing F-35As, making it the top customer of the F-35 outside the United States.

The 42 F-35Bs include 18 to be contracted over the next five years, with Japan setting aside approximately $795 million in its current defense budget to acquire six. It is also converting the helicopter destroyer Izumo, which has a 245-meter flight deck and was originally designed to carry helicopters primarily for anti-submarine warfare, to operate the F-35B.

Just starting work only, maybe later got install.

If full VTOL takeoff/landing only will place way too much stress on the flight deck, so better to install ski jump for takeoff.

The sister ship, Kaga also is under preliminary work to convert also into V/STOL carrier, maybe after Izumo is finished only will start.

I remember a few years ago also got case where a TNI soldier was arrested by police, later a group of soldiers storm the police station looking to free him.

It seems to me this is a relatively common thing over there...

NEW APMM OPVs TO BE STATIONED IN PAHANG, SARAWAK AND SABAH TO MONITOR SOUTH CHINA SEA

user posted image

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak will be receiving a new offshore patrol vessel (OPV) latest by the first quarter of next year, said MMEA director-general Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som.

Speaking at the press conference at the Tun Abang Salahuddin Maritime Complex (Komtas) here today, Mohd Zubil said three OPVs costing about RM700 million, are currently being constructed in Klang and when completed, they will be sent to Sarawak, Sabah and Pahang.

He said the OPV, measuring 83 metres long and 13.7 metres wide, which is capable of conducting patrols at sea for up to 30 days without having to return to base and can help curb the issue of foreign encroachments.

“With the availability of another new asset such as OPV, our capability in monitoring of water encroachments including by the illegal fishermen could be better enhanced,” he said.

Besides the OPVs, Mohd Zubil said MMEA will also own four additional medium sized helicopters which is expected to be delivered by end of this year.

As of now, he said MMEA has 261 boats and vessels, six helicopters and two Bombardier aircrafts.
