QUOTE(WaCKy-Angel @ Jun 21 2019, 08:10 AM) that look more like noise dampener its insulation. works like ac hose insulation. acts like a barrier either keeps the heat out or in. the air gaps in the material reduce heat transfer through conduction. Thats why the thermos (those drinking flasks) has 2 mostly separate walls (good ones have a vacuum, cheap ones air). Same reason we apply thermal paste on processors, we want as much contact between the proc lid and the heatsink. This post has been edited by lsm1991: Jun 21 2019, 09:46 AM

Quite polarising opinions on this, some swear that the insulation works, some say no difference. But thinking towards financial side, car makes always find ways to eke an extra cent of profit here and there. And if can save one part out of the assembly line, that is one part cost saved and overhead cost saved during assembly. So there should be some reasoning that the car battery has to wear "clothing", whether as heat insulator or sound damping purpose.
But the main determinant towards battery life is usually driving conditions, more cruising = more battery life. Also, due to the environment the individual car is subjected with, even the same brand of battery on the same car (assuming same battery quality), could have different battery life. Very hard to determine just based on the insulator existence.

I would even say that it is detrimental to your fuel economy because of the added weight of the insulator

What if the "shield" is to protect against exploding or leaking battery? So the material can absorb acid that got leaked due to leakage at the side?

Inspected a friend's Kelisa and you will never guess what happened. The unscrupulous battery reseller had the audacity to cut away the car's battery heat shield, thus exposing 2 other side of the battery to the engine bay's heat obviously without the owner's approval. I don't think the reseller will be getting any more business ! 😂

BMW F30 3 series had their battery located at the car boot, and from what owners shared it lasted god damned long, with most never changed the battery once throughout their ownership of > 5 years.

I don't want to second guess but I would like to share this with car fanatics. It's a practice of top battery dealers to incur cooling costs just to keep the batteries under the right temperature and I don't even accord myself such luxury of an air-conditioner. So that's it, I will leave your thoughts as to whether batteries located in the engine bay requires protective heat shield etc or otherwise. Have a great weekend. 😊

The heat shield is nothing, exploding batteries has been documented destroying better quality made materials like battery boxes even and covering everything in acid.

The Merc W124 I used to own had an isolated compartment for its battery in the hood. Something like the photo below (taken from internet)

like i said, a simple test.
just touch the battery with and without the shield, will able to tell a difference

well technically battery dont like heat, every little chance you have to isolate heat is a good thing.
btw those myvi battery stock battery cover is hollow, its just the corrugated plastic box with just the top part have the insulation

May agree that the conti's that have their battery at the rear boot can last longer due to less heat to reach there but the battery used by these cars are AGM type which is not lead acid/maintenance free type therefore the lifespan for AGM battery aka deep cycle battery can last more than 3 years but in order to get it change, it can cost you some $$.

I've got these felt sheets about 5mm, it's a very good heat insulator and can withstand high temperature. Been reading about battery heat shield but lack of the tools to DIY it until my tools arrived. So using NS40ZL size I determined that it's 20cm X 13cm X 22cm (height) The connecting edge I use very thick paper clip to lock them up. Then I slit many cuts to fit battery mount, and to allow better terminal inlet. Tomorrow gonna drive it for like 20min, then will put my hands in between the felt sheet and battery to feel how warm is the battery. Attached thumbnail(s)

QUOTE(AllnGap @ Aug 19 2019, 10:15 PM) Bro, check out my DIY heat shield for my 15year old car Bro, neat work there. However, I don't know about that particular material being used like wouldn't it be combustible after sometime ? Hopefully others can share their experiences if they have used such material.

I think for it to melt and burn, whatever plastic inside engine bay will also melt d. At those temperature fuse box plastic, connector plastic all burn d. If not mistaken felt is PET material. I did use the same felt for my sun roof heat shielding, it definitely works as a heat insulator
