Cambodia also same. Years before PassApp, taxi and tuk-tuk will cheat tourists nonstop.

After that someone close to gomen came up with PassApp, a system similar to Grab. It can calculate the rate of the destination. At the same time, the company allow traditional tuk-tuk drivers to upgrade to newer tuk-tuk from India and Thailand. These are more comfortable and powerful. Plus they ran off LPG.

Eventually traditional tuk-tuk slowly went out of business. Only a few left to serve smaller towns or rent out to new drivers.

So, when in Cambodia, always use PassApp or Grab to avoid cheating. Drivers dare not cheat under this system because if they do, the company blacklist them forever.

Taxi in Malaysia still never evolve. Full of con drivers and those from shady backgrounds. If gomen have will power, ban taxis forever.

You do not need to ban taxi. You need to remove the taxi permits from the hands of selected few cronies and give the permits directly to the taxi drivers. When the taxi drivers themselves are owners, they will be more willing to change and adapt to new technology. They will also less likely to cheat because they will lose their permits if reported.

PUTRAJAYA: A Raya open house hosted by the transport ministry here today turned rowdy when some 500 taxi drivers refused to leave the vicinity after failing to meet minister Loke Siew Fook to hand over a memorandum.

Some of taxi drivers were heard shouting for Loke, asking where the minister was.

“No double standards please,” another called.

The crowd of cab drivers were among a group of 2,000 that had earlier gathered outside the Prime Minister’s Office, urging Dr Mahathir Mohamad to resolve issues facing the taxi industry.

I saw they listed down their demands to anthony loke

1) grab cannot pickup at airport, malls and 4-5 star hotels
2) grab driver need to wear uniform
3) grab druver need to paint their car special colour scheme

They want government to allow them to charge customers whatever they want without using meter in their lousy condition taxis.

but what taxi want is potong 1 time rm150 then yumcha whole day, they don't want self business.
