Re: C740 (15)... as one of the first (few) owners in Malaysia.

- average keyboard
- It will glare, doesn't not seem to have any AG coating as it should be as this screen will be subjected to fingers and active pen (stylus). Bright screen: 500nits, great colours (I'd assume it'll hit higher 90+% sRGB, good blacks (for LCD) and observable low contrast images (HDR enabled).
- 1.78kg
- This is subjective to your usage.... if you drop the brightness to 100nits, just web browsing/office... possibly 8 to 9 hours.. when I'm pushing 75% brightness and 1440p to 4k videos, 5 to 6 hours....

- RAM stated at 2400MHz speeds are actually 2666MHz (in dual-channel), non-upgradable

Read/Write speeds of the SSD:
user posted image..

MISC stuff:
- The 2x usb-c are only USB 3.1 gen1 (5gbps)...however both can use for charging... and both passes DP signal through (for 2 external monitors)..
- comes with the Wifi6 module.
- Solid built quality...
- I'd say the only advantage of this series (C740..14&15) is the availability of the 500nits panel (on the 15) .... this generation is a very skimmed down mid-tier (not TB3, no 4k, no expandable RAM, no discreet GPU option, no multi M2 slot, no SD reader,)...
- Though on the 15, the cooling should be sufficient for the 6-core comet-lake i7.

Hi Sifus
searching for a laptop for my company

budget
1.1 low end with max budget of RM2k
1.2 mid end with max budget of RM3.5
1.3 high end with max budget of RM4k
2. Usage:
2.1 photoshop
2.2 adobe lightroom
2.3 for presentation purposes
2.3 general office works using microsoft (word, excel, powerpoint)
3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) :
3.1 15.6" screen size
3.2 8gb ram minimum
3.3 max weight 2.5-2.7kg max
3.4 battery life not an issue
3.5 on site warranty services
3.6 preferred brand: HP, LENOVO. Definitely NOT ASUS, my company had bad experience with asus kuching, sarawak on warranty claims.
3.7 optional part: ssd (m.2 form factor) + hdd. if this option does not exist with current laptops line up. not a problem.

edit on minimum ram requirement

Thank you in advance!

Really appreciate your long thread review!

For the ram will be good enough for normal usage ?
*
If you're not running anything particularly memory intensive 8GB is the standard on most systems now.

QUOTE(ohde @ Nov 27 2019, 08:52 PM)
Hello, I need a recommendation for a Business or a more Premium Laptop.
I'm using Lenovo Y520 currently. (i5-7300HQ, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1000TB)

1. Budget: around 5k

2. Usage: For online business. Need multitasking such as open a lot of browser tabs running Website, FB ads, Excel, Youtube, etc. No preference for the graphic card because no gaming at all, but it would be good if available.

3. Requirements:

15" display is still preferable, with numbering keypad.
Battery life 4-5 hours or if longer is better.
Weight should be lighter than my current Y520 2.4kg.
I have confidence in Lenovo quality - the Y520 is solid and stable after 2 years+ usage.
The Lenovo Y540 looks good, but i'm not sure should i still go for a gaming laptop which i don't game at all.

Kindly advise, thanks all.

A 6-core i7 Comet-lake, Thinkpad with 2 SODIMM slots

^scratch that....

It appears the only 6/8 core thinkpad with 2 or more SODIMM slots is 9th gen with P1 Gen2 or P53

Hello sifus, Need help on choosing a new laptop. I’ve been using an Acer Aspire 5560G for god knows how long.

Budget-8-9k

using it for words, powerpoint, excel etc. browisng and media player and some gaming
-i7 and gpu
- 4k display would be nice
- SSD at least 512GB
- Screen size 15 inch
- Battery can tahan around 5-6 hours
- Nice travel distance for keyboard and if possible a full numpad
- Security like fingerprint scanner or face recognition etc
- Would be great if ada USB C and HDMI
- Don’t want a gaming laptop that sticks out like crazy
- keyboard backlit

I’ve been eyeing the thinkpad x1 extreme gen 2 and dell xps 15 but both don’t have numpad tho.

^likely 100-102% sRGB instead not 122%

Huawei's specs:Color: 70.8% (NTSC) / 100% (sRGB)

Lenovo Legion Y530 81FV01DUMJ seems good enough for me but there's no HDD storage... if I do video editing it wont be enough.. Any laptop with bigger storage but maybe compromising on the graphic card? I think for me overall performance > graphic card.
*
You could put in a SATA 2.5" drive and a NVME.....Which ever that did not come by default..

QUOTE(aba9785 @ Jan 6 2020, 04:12 PM)
eg for THINKPAD T495
+ AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 3500U - RM225
+ 16GB ram - RM450
+ IPS screen - RM80
+ change to NVME - RM10

RM2,879.40  + above = RM3644.
Then if I skip lenovo RAM and get third party 16gb RAM (RM273) and install it myself, then it's around RM3467  blush.gif

cheapskate me just trying to get the best bang for buck... any suggestion is much appreciated.
*
Actually discount applies to your options as well...RM450 will be RM270

Your selection will be RM3,338.4

Personally I do without the RAM (there's 8GB soldered on) for
RM3,068 + RM100 for another 8GB stick (shopee)....

with shopback you'll get 6% cash back of the 3k..... it will be less than RM3k overall...

another 8GB stick instead of 16GB, because with a 16GB stick it'll be running in asynchronous dual channel speeds... which will have some impact on your APU performance.

you'll get a 16gb system.... with the option of going to 24GB and even 40GB

Wait for the ryzen 4700U or 4800U release in 1 to 2 months..for the same price up to 12% increase in performance in single threaded tasks and almost double the performance in the multi-threaded.... companies looking to get rid of old stocks may slash the existing models too perhaps even up to half price (3500U/3700U)...

Also wait for actual reviews of the new systems to go up...

QUOTE(Harvelicious @ Feb 14 2020, 03:20 PM)
My thinking is less than 10K I am able to propose comfortably to my boss.

The problem is if I tell him I need 16GB ram he will base model everything and get 16gb ram. It is fine, but I am not sure how much processing power this software needs. I work in science stuff (proteomics, metabolomics etc) so my laptop would need to be able to crunch a significant amount of data in a short period of time.

OLED is not necessary, but it is mainly for sometimes I need to show stuff on my laptop to people it will just look better. Only reason I am doing my own research is to also slightly future proof the laptop. Especially in term of processing power. As science research gets more advance I will need my laptop to crunch more data.

Main use for the laptop is presentations so ports plays a factor, processing power since it will need to crunch significant amount of data, 16GB ram cause that is the minimal requirement for the new software to run, highly portable since I am on the road or in a flight >50% of my work time. The OLED is more aesthetics and not an actual need (like if you're trying to sell a car you would make sure it is clean and smells nice... while I am trying to tell people to give me more money I need to dazzle them a bit so an OLED would make my models looks better that is all... I know this doesn't matter when I am using a projector but sometimes I do not have access to projector).
*
Yo.... 16GB is barely enough... at least a 32GB... I'm personally rocking with a 64GB laptop system... will be upgrading to a laptop w 8 core/16thread w 128GB soon...

Programs (in metabolomics) regularly crushes 128GB...which for the time being is run on Hing-end desktops/servers and clusters... also personally building a 256GB rig

RAM size != Processing power...

If you really want processing power wait a while for the Ryzen 4800HS and 4800H APUs.... clean-sweeps intel's performance... though Intel's matured chips do have optimisation advantage for some programs...

Hi guys,

My current laptop is no longer can use. Check with repair shop and it needs at least 400-500 ringgit to repair, hence I am looking for replacement.

My current laptop 2012 spec:

Intel Core i5 3317
RAM 8gb
Integrated graphic
480gb SSD and 1TB HDD (Caddy)
Looking for recommendation for replacement.

Budget: RM1500 - 2200
Status: Brand New or USED
Purpose: for work, photo/video editing and some causal gaming
Preference: better or same spec as current laptop..has DVD drive so that I can swap in my 1TB HDD (lazy to make it as external)

Thanks!
*
Lenovo Ideapad L340-15API...

upgrade CPU to 3500U
add to internal RAM 4GB (soldered on).... buy another Sodimm memory separately (not from Lenovo): 4/8/16/32GB... system to 8/12/20/36GB
upgrade to TN 1080p panel
upgrade to 128GB NVMe (RM10)
You have 2 extra spaces for a 2.5" hdd (if you replace the DVD drive by yourself)... you can add your existing drives inside... it'll be a 3 drives system...

RM1,541.25 before other discounts (shopback etc)....

add RM1 ... two year warranty
add RM1... mouse

How is Acer Swift quality & reliability? Company used to use 5 different Acer models but the qualities were really bad and couldn't last long. With Windows the machines just keep getting slower and slower.

If I were to revise my requirements to up to RM3,000, 13" screen, but still less than 1.2kg weight, what would be the recommendations - apart from Acer?
*
That would be a software/OS issue rather than hardware.... or running out of resources (system RAM, causing swapping)...

As for a laptop suggestion... Lenovo's x395 w 1080p screen... that is 800g above 1.2kg, you pay more for the lightness

For this model, there is an option to get 1x of 8gb ram, or 2x 4gb ram. Which is better choice?

And if i take 2x 4gb, how to i know which ram is soldered on? I guess if 1x 8gb, its gonna be soldered on right?
*
2x4gb choice....but just 4gb soldered on only is better, leaving you to populate the empty slot yourself.

4gb soldered on is the only choice to run dual channel memory..... The 1x 8gb option is on the sodimm slot without any soldered on memory on the mainboard & you're stuck at single channel.

Reference video... Underneath the sodimm slot is where the soldered 4gb RAM will be... Unsoldered shown in video.

Thanks bro. Meaning if i choose 2x 4gb, 1 will be soldered, and more will be unsoldered (sodimm). So if i wan to upgrade in future, i can replace the unsoldered slot. And i still can run dual channel, right?
*
Changing the Sodimm to 8/16/32gb....it is still dual channel but asynchronous....
