Hi Sifus,

Budget 2k. Mainly programming use. Might venture into video editing hobby also. Please also recommend a 3k budget model for comparison. Will consider if it is really worth topping up to 3k.

Main req: Preferably lag-less experience doing programming/launching applications..

Thanks.

what are people's general thoughts on the alienware m17 r2?
*
If u got budget.. n know how to maintain.. it a good choice.. too bad not many users here know how to take care it...n most pc shop dunno how to tune the alienware software...

I sell a few.. but software part I oso headache.. if can find after market controller software then it is good.. as the new software is quite crap.. it actually limit the laptop performance to 70% only..

Alienware is not like asus or illegear those hobbyist level.. it's not for amature.. If u r new to mobile gaming I suggest u go dell gaming g series or rog strix (if u wan a way for to you to repent your sin from pc gaming then u choose asus, haha)

Why those is kena con?
*
example, during the launching of their zenbook pro duo. they tell those tester (not even qualified reviewer, some dun even know wat is ssd) to emphasis this. "you can do 3D content creation with our rtx 2060" which is clearly a fraud.. unless u very free n hv alot of time.. if not render with rtx 2060 mobile will make ur blood pressure go sky high

n secondly, they always say improved cooling bla bla bla. but those who know their system... the cooling technology is almost same like 2015

hi,
looking for good laptop to last me for the next 4-5 years

1. Budget: around 3-4k (cheaper better)

2. Usage: photoshop, movies, games, some 3D modelling software

3. Requirement: can run photoshop smooth, can play new games at high @1080p 60fps, lightweight
Upgrading from old desktop so this will be main system, I've never owned a gaming laptop ever so idk about prices

Not urgently in need, can wait for new laptop model for 2-3 months for better specs

QUOTE(Harvelicious @ Feb 13 2020, 08:17 PM)
Hello,

My job gave me a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon (6th Gen) for work. It is a solid computer: slim, powerful, good battery life, but I ran into a problem today. There is a software that I need to use which requires 16GB RAM and my 8GB RAM can barely load the software. I need to propose a new laptop to my boss any recommendation? I wanted to propose the 2020 Dell XPS 13 but I am not sure when it will get to Malaysia and it might cost >RM10K which I do not think they will be happy with it. I am currently looking at the

Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2
9th Gen I7
Windows 10 Pro
16 (8+8)GB RAM
512GB SSD
OLED Panel

It comes out to about RM8.5K which is about the same price as my current X1 when it came out I believe. So I can propose it and they might be okay with it. Anyone have a better suggestion?

My thinking is less than 10K I am able to propose comfortably to my boss.

The problem is if I tell him I need 16GB ram he will base model everything and get 16gb ram. It is fine, but I am not sure how much processing power this software needs. I work in science stuff (proteomics, metabolomics etc) so my laptop would need to be able to crunch a significant amount of data in a short period of time.

OLED is not necessary, but it is mainly for sometimes I need to show stuff on my laptop to people it will just look better. Only reason I am doing my own research is to also slightly future proof the laptop. Especially in term of processing power. As science research gets more advance I will need my laptop to crunch more data.

Main use for the laptop is presentations so ports plays a factor, processing power since it will need to crunch significant amount of data, 16GB ram cause that is the minimal requirement for the new software to run, highly portable since I am on the road or in a flight >50% of my work time. The OLED is more aesthetics and not an actual need (like if you're trying to sell a car you would make sure it is clean and smells nice... while I am trying to tell people to give me more money I need to dazzle them a bit so an OLED would make my models looks better that is all... I know this doesn't matter when I am using a projector but sometimes I do not have access to projector).

are u used to OLED display? xps 13 with similiar spec can get around same price if i park it under commercial

Yo.... 16GB is barely enough... at least a 32GB... I'm personally rocking with a 64GB system... will be upgrading to a 8 core/16thread w 128GB soon...

Programs (in metabolomics) regularly crushes 128GB...which for the time being is run on Hing-end desktops/servers and clusters... also personally building a 256GB rig

RAM size != Processing power...
