QUOTE(wiraone @ Jul 22 2021, 06:09 PM) If you can see Genting from your balcony, you shouldn't have any problem working with any repeaters up there at Genting even with just your handy talkie with stock antenna and just 5W. Living in high rise added an advantage for you if you just want to work on VHF/UHF bands. External antenna, depends really, since you're living at a high rise building, you might have difficulty to source a base antenna. Another option is to have a high gain mobile antenna and put it somewhere at the balcony. Don't worry to much for now with buying all those thing, they might be unnecessary. Best to do trial and error when you've your handy talkie and license. Noted. Really appreciate the info and advice. I guess the first step is to get my licence first

Hi all, just an update for past and future readers. I have successfully renewed my expired licensed and purchased Yaesu FT-450, ATU-100 Tuner, HF20A Wire Antenna, 20m coax cables and QJE 13.8V 30A PSU for roughly RM3,300~ So far, the longest distance I have make contact is in Bali Indonesia, 2000km from my location. Now I am racun-ed looking at fan dipole and Signal Link for digital modes! Thanks all for your kind suggestions / tips / tricks! 73 Edit: I am also looking forward to upgrade my license to 9M in the nearest future, to work with 80m and 20m band This post has been edited by K0MR4DE: Sep 1 2021, 02:58 PM

But once you obtained amateur radio license from SKMM, you can reach whole Malaysia via MARTS Repeater. Maybe need to upgrade antenna a bit lah, but that don't cost a lot for VHF UHF antenna. If really interested to make overseas contact, can look for HF Radio

Morse code only applicable IF you want to upgrade to Class A license. To upgrade to Class A license, a user need to wait for 12 months after taking Class B license + take morse code exam. Any sifoo here, can correct me if I'm wrong 😅

If really interested to make overseas contact, can look for HF Radio You could actually reach overseas with those cheap HT, but with the help of Internet. It requires a gateway though, something like EchoLink or IRLP. For those who've digital radio like DMR or C4FM, you could invest a little bit more buying a so called hotspot which becomes gateway to many other amateur radio networks world wide. Our 9M2RKL-CF4M repeater is connected to worldwide network, you just need to invest more buying a digital C4FM radio. We had 9M2RKL-DMR repeater which has been dead for almost a year now, this also connected to worldwide network too. Yes, the cheap sub-100 baofeng will not let you work with people all over the world, but with the correct setup, you'll be able to. This post has been edited by wiraone: Oct 29 2021, 06:45 PM

Hi guys, I'm new to the Ham radio scene (only recently came to know about Ham radio and the community).
Got some noob questions. I understand there are regulations and also Ham radio license. Wanna ask:
1. Do I need license if I transmit in UHF Citizen Band? 2. What are the Penalties and Fines for transmitting without license? 3. With license, is it you are then allowed to transmit through more frequency range and at higher power?
Thank you for your time!

Hi, 1. No, you don't need to have a license if you're transmitting on UHF CB since they're under class assignment. But do remember, you still need SKMM approved devices (usually walkie-talkie) to be able to transmit. 2. According to SKMM, its RM300K. 3. Yes, with a B license, you'll be able to transmit on VHF (144-148), UHF (430-440), HF (7.00-7.200, 28.000-29.700, 50.000-54.000). With A license, you'll be able to transmit on more bands/frequencies. https://www.mcmc.gov.my/skmmgovmy/files/att...ervice_2012.pdfThis post has been edited by wiraone: Oct 18 2022, 02:58 PM

UPDATE: Starting 01/01/2023, MCMC has introduced a new class for starter. So, anyone who're interested in the hobby will start with Class C (9W3) first before upgrading to Class B, and a year later to Class A. The exams have been reorganised and new question banks have been released. There will be no longer CW (Morse Code) test for Class A, replaced with technical written test (objective test) instead. Latest 3rd edition guidelines, new handbook, question banks for Class C, B, A can be found here: https://www.mcmc.gov.my/en/amateur-radio-op...r-certification1.
