If you feed 60fps content to a 90Hz screen, the display will either switch to 60Hz or duplicate some frames. Not much content is available yet, to take advantage of 90Hz, as most videos and games push only 60 frames per second. As display tech improves, so will video and game developers push their contents to take advantage of the 90 Hz screen.

I am pretty sure you will notice the difference in smoothness while strolling through your phone with a 90 Hz display. Developers claims there is less eye fatique with a 90Hz screen because the screen pushes 90 frames / second compared to 60 frames on our current phones making viewing a little easier on the eyes. How much we can take advantage of a 90 Hz screen remains unknown, but a 90 Hz display will definitely consume more battery juice.

As a non-gamer, I plan to switch from 90hz to 60hz if I find it to adversely affect battery life after a couple of weeks or so

Good for you bro... btw Oneplus did mention that not all units are affected. They are still trying to find a fix around this as they are having problems replicating the issue on their own.

I can assume, in the next week, this thread will be full of pics showing off our new toys. Hopefully, all of us who preordered  it can get it before Raya.

Of course they did. But sometimes these bugs may not arise until certain process are triggered or applications opened on user's units. Like mentioned, even Oneplus is having trouble replicating thr ghost touch everytime on their units and hence a slight delay on another update to address this issue.

I wonder will XianFeng later post that they don't have enough Oneplus Wireless Bullets and asked us to wait for months?
